- cssdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome to instant-messaging, VoIP for free.
- tasadar24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or Teamspeak, or Skype. Voip is just the 'simple - stupid' version of using the internet for phone. Other forms require both parties to be on the internet.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak, no matter what you think of him, is right about one thing. The telcos will stop at nothing to protect their (outdated) business. They really are 800 pound guerillas. I gave up my POTS and will use smoke signals before going back to it.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sucks that a kid died but subscribers should RTFM and have a backup plan for contacting emergency services.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oddly enough, the story you are talking about concerning Vonage and the death of a child was caused entirely by NOT READING INSTRUCTIONS. 911 is available, but has to be activated BEFORE it is available. The parents neglected to activate it and ultimately caused the death of their own child. The lesson here is: follow the instructions.
- adam.lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am just curious, what did people do before 911. The mortality rate must have been rediculous. VOIP didn't kill a baby, the idiot users did. Maybe, now I know this might sound crazy, they should have programmed their local emergency numbers into speed dial. Local Police, Nearest Hospital and Fire Department all come to mind.
Honestly, I think the term VOIP is being used to specifically. Skype is VOIP, I don't see that getting expensive. I also don't see Astrisk getting expensive either. What about FWD? What part of Free doesn't Dvorak get? Yes geek stuff, not average consumer, but still. It isn't going away. VOIP will end up being like web and email. The cost is calculated into bandwidth. Now if only IPTV could go that way too. :) - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vonage is the one being blamed for the deaths, but as was mentioned you have to read the instructions and when you sign up the clearly and repeatedly tell you about the 911 activation. Vonage is already close to solving the 911 problem and making it even better. Dvorak seems to just rant because hes good at it, but it will be interesting to see what the idiotic telcos do. Also like was mentioned I will IM, carrier pigeon, 2 tin cans on a string....whatever, before I start paying more than my $17 a month for my phone. But I am not too worried, when you have the world vs. greedy telcos, my bet is on the world. There will always be an alternative and it gives me a nice warm feeling inside knowing that somehow, somewhere my fellow nerds will be fighting the man.
- linuxathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blocking VoIP and a restrictive ToS against VoIP use will only lead to increase migration away from the offending ISP to ISPs with more liberal ToS's, like Speakeasy.net. Speakeasy.net may still lease its lines from the telco's and Covad, which may block us by default, but if Speakeasy has any say in it (with a big subscriber base as backup), I don't think it'll be doomsday like Dvorak is predicting.
- cssdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"cant trust a phone service that dont come with 911 this is why ppl have phones to get help A.S.A.P dumb business"
Double negitives, didn't read the comments and you're calling Vonage dumb? I think their commercials are talking about you, woo-hoo-woo-hoo-hoo, RTFM. - mushroom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cant trust a phone service that dont come with 911 this is why ppl have phones to get help A.S.A.P dumb business
- jabfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0voip phones are easily replacing PBXs which is a great news for any of us who have had to play around with punchpanels full of rj11, cat3 and raw cables.. :eww: :p
cat6 and voip over fiber, wave o' the future..
just need to setup a voip SMS and telco for all the blackberries and palms in a company with a wide distribution net and you are totally set..
never pay the local telco fees again, hell you can even lease access to others and recoup the costs even faster - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0untill they let you call 911 with it and they get it to work 100% of the time they shouldnt let them sell it to people. they had a lady on the news whos baby died because she couldnt call 911 with vonage. they shouldnt even be allowed to sell a phone service that doesnt allow you to call 911. unless im missing something it wouldnt even be hard for them to add this ability to their services. all they would need is to have the number for your local emergency services on file and have a system to connect you to it when you dial 911.
