  • popothebright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The take away here is that 'the law' and 'business interests of the few' can be very close friends. This of course, is nothing new.

    What I do find disturbing is individuals, with no business or financial association to the beneficiaries of such laws, upholding them as if they were moral statutes. I have seen dozens of posts today which seem to equate laws with morals. I find this to be utterly terrifying. How did morality become so confused? Or a better question, how have lawmakers been so terrifyingly successful at indoctrinating people into the "belief" that laws are somehow morals?

    Another example of this that I see on Digg all the time: I know dozens of bloggers who *will not* discuss even the most general aspects of AdSense revenue EVEN ANONYMOUSLY -- as if the Google gag order was anything other than a restriction of free speech. (Sure, your exact income is one thing -- but a discussion of AdSense as a business model? Please!). But I ramble...

    My point is -- that business would love to control your freedom of speech just as much as government would. We have clear cut protections in terms of political free speech -- but speech that runs against the grain of business is not really protected at all in this country. And that's a very, very slippery slope. We should all be in active defiance of these restrictions.

    And I personally am boycotting Digg. I am so, so disappointed.
