I recommend watching all the videos/films made by Robert X Cringely such as NERDS 2.0 and other PBS releases by Cringely he takes you through all the history of the internet from excite to Google. if you are doing a Internet/IT degree at Uni I recommend watching/Borrowing these documentaries as they give you an interesting facts about the history of the internet. Great Digg! - dfj225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you think about it, Google really is one of the greatest ideas of the last decade. It really changed the way the world works and made the internet a much more valuable resource. Before, if you didn't know a good site to find information on, there was a very small chance that you would actually find something good by searching. Now you can look up just about anything and get (most of the time) good results. To me, this makes the World Wide Web much more useful than it ever was before.
- dconlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the main reason Google caught on was because it worked. I remember using Altavista before PageRank came along... you'd search for Microsoft and you'd get some obscure article that *might* possibly actually be somewhere in microsoft's site. The idea of typing in a phrase and getting the authoritative site for that phrase in top position just wasn't around before Google came along.
- Harami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wired always seems to capture the culture around technology, especially when they are referring to the past. You can really see when technology was changing and the brilliant minds that were driving that change. This particular issue is filled with that, and I highly suggest reading the '10 Years That Changed The World' cover story.
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love knowing the how and the why behind things and this is a perfect example. Wired does seem to get into great background detail on the stories as harami said. What really kills me about this is that I now know that Page and Brin are about my age, and WAY more sucessful. How sad.
- wmitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of those articles that has motivated me to work my ass off in work today which is an accomplishment it being one of those not much to do slow days in work waiting for client approval :) .
