The Big News About Yahoo!
forbes.com — Yahoo! is working on more user-generated "social news," much like the information delivered by sites including Digg.com and Yahoo!-owned Del.icio.us.
- 588 diggs
- digg it
- rodrigomuniz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+58If it was Google, they just would buy digg.com
- psilanthropist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10and since it is yahoo, they're gonna buy reddit.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Yahoo! gets crappy seconds.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+3Compared to Google, Yahoo /is/ crappy seconds.
- ronoxQ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Reddit isn't crappy seconds. It's quite a lot more functional. But if anything, Yahoo would go for Digg. Reddit is Google's sort of new service if anything, IMHO.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Yahoo! gets crappy seconds.
- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Google's News service just plain sucks.
- psilanthropist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10and since it is yahoo, they're gonna buy reddit.
- Compukid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Do we need another social news website? Will people really flock to yet another social news website? I have a yahoo account, but do I really want to create another profile or submit my opinions to 2 or more sites?
- justok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Good questions. Do keep us informed if you ever come up with some answers.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2People will flock to anything (myspace) but do we need another social news site? No. The social media experiment has largely failed even Digg is now hovering above the level of a bookmark service. While some good news squeezes through every now and then most of the 'news' is the stuff that appeals to the lowest common denominator, top ten lists, celebrity stage antics, fake politics, conspiracy theories, gossip, LOLCatz (won't lie, they make me laugh but we know where to find them you don't need to put them on DIgg) and the latest "I'll spam Digg to get some traffic to my ads" websites.
The vast majority of people seem to have no concept of news and have no restraint when it comes to posting up (usually with a horrible description and title) every little thing on the internet that interests them.
- poet, on 10/10/2007, -9/+34Google needs to buy Yahoo.
- Avor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Then set it on fire.
- Oronar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Then throw it off a cliff.
- Asianwaste, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Then find it again...
- psilanthropist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Then ***** in it . . .
- chilekillr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Then turn it into a linkfarm...
- Oronar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Then throw it off a cliff.
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah, then flickr might not be so terribly managed.
- humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2if you think so, go take a look at orkut
- humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2if you think so, go take a look at orkut
- phimu227, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8i don't agree that google should buy yahoo. there are too few "good" internet search/content companies now and narrowing it down to just "google" would hurt all of us in the long run. don't get me wrong, i am practically a google fanboy myself (picasa, google docs, gmail, etc.) but i think it just might get a little to scary if it truly becomes a "google earth".
- widgetmaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Competition bodies would never allow it
- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's funny the double standards people have. Anytime MS wants an acquisition, people go crazy, but Google, them moving toward monopoly is just fine.
- archer104, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Goohoo?
- Avor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Then set it on fire.
- deboosher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37how was this story sitting around for a day, then hit the front page with just over 30 diggs? Ohh.... Kevin Rose Dugg it! FRONT PAGE!
- Exclip, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1whores....
- redrock34, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3answers.yahoo.com was a smashing success so I'm guessing they will advertise the ***** out of their social news site on the homepage and be up to par with Digg in about a month.
- QuickeningYak, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3Yahoo! Wow! Who! *****! Cares!
- nontitle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4the last one should have been a question mark.
- QuickeningYak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That must be why it's getting dugg down...
- nontitle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4the last one should have been a question mark.
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4People still use Yahoo for something?
- melooon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Competition is always a good thing, right?
- nontitle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3nope, not really. They see something good, like digg, then they clone it, because it's whats popular and it's what will get them the most money.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You mean reddit and slashdot are losing money daily ?
- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thoughtless statement, thanks!
So Henry Ford shouldn't of had competition regarding assembly lines?
Of course he should, and was forced to improve upon his model once it was there.
- nontitle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3nope, not really. They see something good, like digg, then they clone it, because it's whats popular and it's what will get them the most money.
- Forshman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I hate it when people try to get their piece of the pie and muscvle their way into things with marketing might. All it does it disconnect communities.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Front page stories on Digg are about 80% worthless ***** these days.
- chilekillr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And the last 20% of the stories are about the iphone and Linux. I miss Digg 2.0
- jabhishek, on 10/19/2007, -5/+2i didnt knew Yahoo was still existing.
- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can't even write a simple comment correctly, so I don't think it matters what you knew.
- hunchback, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Google is awesome, so is Yahoo! I love them both. You little dweeby haters can suck on my sweaty salty hairy nuts.
- Prayog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its hard to understand how this will be helpful, most of what is popular in del.icio.us is on the digg front page too! On the flipside it would be interesting to see what Yahoo social news front page will be like!!
- Narwaffle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If yahoo owns del.icio.us, why are they competing with themselves?
- Prod_Deity, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1sometimes in house competion can be a good thing. Think back to apple in the early 80's.
- quirkychic22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2yahoo should just buy digg.com to regain its lost popularity. then merge it with del.icio.us. it could be called "digg.licio.us"
- smotpoker1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'll stick with DIGG due to" they let us talk about the news with direct links for everybody to express their opinions views and parodies".Yahoo use to do this and quit.As far as I am concerned yahoo became another generic news site.A dime a dozen.
For instance this "deboosher" loser. Why don't you go to yahoo and cry to them , or better yet come back at me with a snappy comment to gain back some of your manhood. You must be a very lonely guy I imagine you stick you ass out the window everyday hoping somebody will come by and cop a feel. Better yet try spreading Rograine⢠on your manboobs to look more manly.- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Maybe they read the comments here on digg....that's all it takes to discourage the potential of social news.
- Andy.D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3If Yahoo rips Digg, they are truly out of ideas.
- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And if digg rips slashdot? Oh wait....
- MrViklund, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Very interesting. We will see what comes of it. I support Yahoo in their efforts. I'm a big fan of Yahoo services especially Yahoo Mail which I have been using since 1998.
- Raymont, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0In the end there will only be one and that will be called,Raymont.vox, .com.
- realdeal1115, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1I betchya they get the comment system right!
- cyberoidx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Quote : "Over the past two years, Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) has quietly solidified its position as the No. 1 provider of general, financial and sports news on the Internet."
Thats funny. The Last time I visited Yahoo was Two ***** years ago.- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And you are a good measure because.....??
- chaos7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1i don't use yahoo
- revolved, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yahoo! is seeking broad protection for the trademark 'Yahoo! Me2U'. Ten bucks this is what their social news service/site will be called:
http://www.trademork.com/yahoo-me2u/ - corevette, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This service is already out by Yahoo and Red Hat: http://mugshot.org
Email me at corevette@gmail.com if you want an invite - Leeet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yahoo should buy NowPublic or YulNews. Both of them are in user generated news.
- kinglenster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think I'll make my job available for user-generated content so I can just sit back.
- gadgetboy32, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man you people sound like newbies! Where the ***** were you all using BEFORE Google?? Yes you can say Yahoo, I'm sure you weren't gonna say AOL or MSN were you?? Google and Yahoo have their strengths and Yahoo is not going down that easy either. If people who were around, I mean around before Google came into market, there was this thing called AOL and the merge with Time Warner. People thought Yahoo was over, look at what happen. Also the same when MSN came out, just remember they were all defeated. And over the years of the internet and the internet boom, Yahoo still ranks the top 3.
I'm sure the trend will change over the years and people will flock to the next biggest thing. Right now it's Google and Facbook. Give it a few years, I'm sure i'll be a different. - sjohnson0881, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yahoo is a pretty cool company
- manaya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That page was so full of advertisement and useless stuff all around the screen that it took me a big effort to read the full article. Dang!
