- Fission, on 10/12/2007, -2/+100How about the smiley face that screams at you "NO WAY!!!!" in that high-pitched voice? C'mon...you all know what I'm talking about.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+73The worst I've ever seen was a big banner which not only jiggled, but rapidly blinked between black-text-on-yellow and yellow-text-on-black. Even better, it shouted that "YOUR COMPUTER MIGHT BE INFECTED!!!!" and wanted me to click it to get a "free virus scan". Yeah, nothing says "trust me and let me run software on your computer" like an annoying banner.
If it had only squealed some really cheesy MIDI music or a looped sampling of a foghorn, it'd have been perfect. - Prysorra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74Amusing how the site itself has banner ads...

Am I living in the past? :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61I'm pretty sure the one with the fly buzzing is the most annoying.
- adidos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59Banner ads?!? Wow, I just had a flash back...
I kinda forgot what banner ads were for a moment there! Ahhh how I love FF + ABP :) - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49How did this article NOT mention the ***** talking iPod ad's ... "CONGRADULATIONS YOU HAVE JUST WON AN IPOD CLICK HERE"
... Sigh. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43The ones that PISS me off are the mosquito buzz and the "You have one two free iPod nanos".
I have to mute my system every time. - Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39do you think the guy who made the buzz ad ever had a "dear god....what have i done." moment?
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39One of the most obnoxious types of ads are the ones that have flashy eye-catchers that have absolutely nothing to do with the product being advertised. There was a flashing orange and black ad that I saw recently of which had a laughing pumpkin on it. In front of the pumpkin were 2 black silhouettes of a guy and girl raving and flailing their arms around rapidly. Above the pumpkin and the raving people was a spinning disco ball.
The text for the ad, which was next to the pumpkin, said "CLEAR YOUR DEBTS THE EASY WAY. CLICK HERE"
Someday I’m going to become rich and famous when I invent a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.
/bash - alamandrax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35what you do to your body in the privacy of your home does not concern us. trust me. we don't want to know.
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32dont forget the flash advertisements that slide out and engulf the entire page!
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Use AdBlock Plus : )
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 - Sagags, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Ads in general dint bother me because I know they are what support my favorite websites, I mean without ads many sites like Google, Digg, You-tube, Yahoo, well millions of sites wouldn't be around without ads.
But they do bother me when they get in the way of the content, for example I was trying to watch a video on You-tube and all I could hear was a bee buzzing around in some flash banner and I couldn't hear the video, then there are those embedded flash ads that pop up in the window your viewing and not another window.
Basically they don't bother me as long as they don't get in the way of the content - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25adblock plus FTW. I used it to block the jiggling ad on the last page, it was too distracting.
- Sneakernets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22When flash started to be used for Ads, things went downhill, fast.
BEcause for a while... they had... SOUND.
My first encounter with a flash ad was not very nice.
"HEY! I SOLVED *MY* DEBT PROBLEM... CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE!"
***** you doubleclick, adrevenue, and the rest of you slimeballs for your stupid, intruding, annoying, and malicious advertisements. - rjam710, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@z00k
Those talking ads scare the ever-loving ***** out of me everytime. They always manage to "pop up" when I'm online late at night when it's really quiet (I put quotes around pop up because they always manage to be in the background, so I just hear this annoyingly monotone voice telling me how I've won ***** I don't want).
Oh and to answer your question, probably because it's not a banner ad; it's a whole ***** page :-/ - Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I was hoping someone else would mention the mosquito add so I could jump on the bandwagon. I hate that ***** mosquito! ARRRRGHG!
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
The horror. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15What's worse than banner ads is sites that give a you a "top five" list where each list item has its own three paragraph-long page. Then by the time you click to see the second item, the site already crashed.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I can't believe how many people actually fall for and download these: http://cracked.com/jp/ads04.jpg
The number is staggering, actually. Being an IT person, I've banned the use in our office :) - SwampyUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@TheSeraph.
Do me a favour - lean over and punch him. Hard.
Thanks :) - goosepillows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Thanks for the top 5!.... Max Radical?
Anyone else find Max to be incredibly obnoxious?
I suppose subtlety is not the forte of MAX RADICAL!!!!
He complains about morons who click banner ads when the site has them
He complains about morons who make cliched jokes when he makes a cliche observation about how gosh darn annoying banner ads are. - GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11the first time i saw the fake-out X button to "close" the ad, i thought it was really clever.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11THOSE TWO GOT MARRIED!!
- TheSeraph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Negyxo, I work with him (no joke. I'm dead serious), and yes he has had a "Dear God" moment or two.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Number One Most Annoying Site on the Web!
http://www.cracked.com/index.php?name=News&sid=1800 - vitas33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ok let me be the first to say... I'm sorry. I'm sorry I sold out so low, but I am responsible for 3/5 types of these banners. I guess I'll explain a little more. I'm one of the graphic designers that design/work on these types of ads that are plaguing the internet. It's nothing I'm proud of, in matter of fact when my family asks what I do I say "internet advertising" and leave it at that. They know I'm in design aspect but can barely check their emails, for me it's better off.
Now on the other hand my friends ALL know and they make fun of me because of it as well. I've had them send me screenshots of a single banner plastered on 1 page of a site in 3 different spots, I about lost it. So why do I do it you ask? I have a Wife and 2 Kids and it provides a roof over their heads. Secondly, It pays well and the work isn't hard, obviously. Do I like it? HELL NO, I'm flat out embarrassed by it. Have I looked for other jobs? Yes and I still am but sadly most of the really good advertising agencies only pay about 70% of what I make and I have to work 50-70 hours a week. With 2 kids it's a bit much.
Now you're probably asking yourself, "Ok which banners did this kid make?" Well I'll give you a list, hell, I'll give you the source files (well probably not because I'm sure my employer wouldn't be to happy) in damn near any size you'd like.
Swat the fly, Get 2 iPods (pick any version you'd like), Slay the ogre, Shoot the paparazzi (w/ brad pitt), Box George Bush, Do you think Marijuana should be legal? (Yes I do!), Shoot the UFO, Shoot King Kong, Splat the Co-Worker, Damn near any celebrity banner you see out there (Who's grill is this?, Who's legs are these?, ect.), Do you like [Fill in name of person], I could go on and on with this. We're talking 3 years of banners, flash games, and email creatives. And trust me as much as you hate the shakey banners, image how much it must suck to work on them day in and day out.
So once again from the bottom of my heart. I apologize to the whole digg community and the internet in general. I don't mean to burn everyones eyes out. I hate them as much as you. - nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The funny thing is that I noticed this site uses the same banners that it just wrote an article about!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10YOU ARE THE 100,000th VISITOR THIS WEEK! CLICK TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE!
- Goldspink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I hope the designer of that mosquito ad gets malaria.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!? SAY SOMETHING! WHAT!?
- lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11These are all annoying banner ads, but they can never be as annoying as the ones that come out of nowhere, and completely cover-up the body of the page. (esp while reading)
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Heres an ad I REALLY hate. Someone trying to be 1337 and failing hard.
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9845/pwntdq6.jpg
Pretty Ironic it happens to be featured on cracked.com - sathias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My vote goes for
"Say something!!!
Whaaaaat???" - dominasian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9those ads that said youre the millionth visitor pissed me off the most. I would get them on pages where the counter on the bottom clearly shows 10254. Those and those damn smiley ads when the mouse passes over them they yell "helloooo"
- Kikkoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8OMGGGGG! NO WAY!
- gpcprog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Even better:
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28un-delicious_for_your_computer%29 - SunDestroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If it wasn't for net-noobs clicking on them, they wouldn't exist.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9All on one page:

"Click the Fart Button, you know you want to!" - bigdt87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ugh, and those ***** get out of debt ones with the dancing silhouettes of the ***** cowboys, oh my ***** god, so annoying.
- Verdanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hah, AdBlock blocked the examples of those ads in that article. That's love.
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Browser is open, I have 20 tabs, all full length pages...I hear the sound...
I pretty much have to restart the browser. - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The article devotes the entire first page to a lead-in that has nothing to do with Internet advertising. If only I could digg something down for "Shoddy Journalism."
- vitas33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4TheSeraph : haha it's funny to hear someone else basically agree, "It sucks but it pays the bills." It's not fun, I don't like it but you do what you need to do. What really sucks is when you're surfing and you start seeing your own work and you think, "Oh my God this ***** is following me everywhere I go!" I'm curious where are you located? I'll show you mine if you show me yours, LOL.
I'm glad no one from my work reads digg. Well... probably the guys in Tech/Dev... Oh well. Guess I'll update the old resume. :D - DelSolMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Put ads on blog. Put link on DIGG. Title it The 100 Most Annoying Ads On The Internet. Prosper.
Wait did I type that outloud? - raymiester500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The ones with bush making the stupid faces are really dumb. Its already been established that he's an idiot.
- FairlyStupid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But one thing is for sure: All the banner ads mentioned are for companies which have made MILLIONS off of them.
- Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love that credit card check one. That's classic, I could actually see people falling for that.
- geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What good is the Web with most of the ads but without any of the images? Fix it!
FF Addons
AdBlock Plus w/FilterSetG + Updater

Greasemonkey Extensions
Disable Text Ads
AdSlicer for MySpace
Download a hosts file replacement that blocks all ad sites and you're done. I never see an ad, an image, a video, or a script unless I want to. And no one sees my referrers, my IP, or my browser agent, either, unless I don't care. It's more fun this way, trust me. -
