- fkr3, on 10/29/2007, -7/+234It wasn't worth $160 billion, it's worth that now. The name's perhaps a contributory factor but the work that's gone into the company kind of makes the pretense that it was a $160 billion mistake silly.
- Emachine, on 11/13/2007, -3/+184Isn't this just a spelling mistake? I though I typo was then you accidentally push the wrong keys on the keyboard. When your fingers are too fat, or something...
- Firehed, on 10/30/2007, -0/+127How long have you been waiting for an opportunity to tell us about that? ;)
- keyme, on 10/30/2007, -4/+124"Where does Sean currently work? Microsoft."
Next time I see a typo in a MS product, I'll know who to blame it on. - pbaehr, on 10/30/2007, -5/+102Sure, just ask Digg and Flickr.
- jhshukla, on 10/29/2007, -0/+78On XP, run services.msc. select "Error Reporting Service" and read its description. "applictions" instead of "applications."
- digitalmineral, on 10/30/2007, -2/+71funny - I'll bet this happens all the time, we just don't know it!
- beelz, on 10/29/2007, -1/+60cool to hear the back story about where the name google came from I never knew
- Firehed, on 10/29/2007, -4/+54You seem to have confused typos with a lack of domain availability following the dot-bomb.
- Iandefor, on 10/29/2007, -0/+44Because, as we all know, it was the *name* that made Google's success and no other factor.
- haxx4, on 10/29/2007, -3/+41I would usually think of an "$x typo" as a typing mistake that resulted in the loss of $x.
- Derrekito, on 10/29/2007, -2/+37perthapsd
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+35The order of the first 8 words kinda made sense.. What happened after that?
- shiftt, on 11/09/2007, -0/+34Where are you guys pulling $160B from? The market can for Google is $210B
- Taciturn, on 10/29/2007, -0/+34Why is there an '8' in the googolplex.com googolplex?
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -0/+29the goggles do nothing!
- fkr3, on 10/29/2007, -1/+29Whatever. The domain was still worth nothing before an $xxx billion dollar company was built on top of it.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -1/+28Your comment makes no sense.
- Genma, on 11/13/2007, -1/+27moot
- iamdan1, on 10/29/2007, -2/+26You have a typo
- bariswheel, on 10/29/2007, -1/+25Valleywag is the Paparazzi/National Enquirer of Silicon Valley...cute story, but I'm not sure how true this is. Citing som sources would be nice...
- kpaphysicist, on 10/29/2007, -1/+22That story is a lie! We all know that google ripped of booble. Damn college kids and their porn.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/29/2007, -2/+21and he's a 'softie. d'oh!
- inspecality, on 10/29/2007, -0/+17Well, you could have just googoled it.
- superyounan1, on 10/29/2007, -1/+17yeah? and? its not like there was a great search engine floating out there in the ether in limbo, waiting to make rich the first person to register its blessed name.
- BryanTravers, on 10/29/2007, -0/+16The fingers you have used to dial are too fat....
- bs0l, on 10/29/2007, -0/+14http://www.googol.com

http://www.googolplexian.com - vornan19, on 10/29/2007, -0/+12Please mash the keypad now to recieve a dialing wand!
- maverex, on 10/30/2007, -0/+11Apple, anyone?
- kck724, on 10/30/2007, -0/+11Is it me or was that article terribly written?
- Roger, on 10/29/2007, -1/+11Tell that to the idiot who came up with the name "Zune".
- Firehed, on 11/06/2007, -1/+10That's only because you're so used to Google. Had it been googol.com, you'd be laughing at the idiots who can't spell and ended up at some domain-squatting google.com.
- trib4lmaniac, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9Owen Thomas: "Sean Anderson writes us to point out that Google's market capitalization is now more than $200 billion. Of course. But we were discounting all the oddly spelled acquisitions like Jaiku for which Anderson can't take credit."
- patch6, on 10/28/2007, -1/+9It could have been named any neutral term and still experienced that kind of success. The name itself is only one small part of the picture.
- notmiya, on 10/29/2007, -0/+8I was expecting some tragic story, something like a misplaced decimal (Office Space) where they eventually fixed the typo and got their money back. As an average digg user, I think I can say that most of us already know the story behind Google.
- MrSarcasm, on 10/29/2007, -0/+8its' easier to get dugg if you blame microsoft for something.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7Is dig.com available... It's not? Alright, let's just add an extra "g" and call it a night.
- HanSolo69, on 10/29/2007, -3/+10I don't get how this has anything to do with him working at Microsoft?
- Pheter, on 10/29/2007, -1/+8I agree, thought I don't get the connection with iPod and media..
Now digg me down OR politely explain to me how the name came about. - jedi0utkast, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7That is kind of misleading.. that was not a 160 Billon dollar mistake, it did not cost them money..
- jackyyll, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7mootle
soup - Eridani0X, on 10/29/2007, -2/+9actually a googol is a different number than a googolplex. A googol is 1x10^100, while a googolplex is 1x10^googol.
- Firehed, on 10/29/2007, -2/+8He used to work with the Google guys, now he works at MS. It's just a bit of interesting fillter material.
- Obligation, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6At first I thought you were trying to trick people into staring at their computer trying to find it, but there really is. Nice catch.
- imran7, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6i see what you did there...
- on9star, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6http://graphics.stanford.edu/~seander/
LOL If you click on Sean Andersons name in the article you get to that link above, down below there's a link if "you owe him some money" - richardhenry, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6You mean trademark, and yes, you can.
- Scaryclouds, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5I'm going to have to quote that...
- seanc6610, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5I don't know about that, because google has such a versatile name. Honestly, yahoo search was around for a while, but nobody ever "yahooed" anything. I think the name lends itself to being easily altered, easily remembered, and kind of attractive in its simplicity. and typing googol.com looks soo much dumber than google.com
- HonoredMule, on 10/29/2007, -0/+4Great...that gibberish passed lexical analysis just to explode on the compiler. Brain freeze isn't fun, you know.
