- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, I kind of feel bad about taking my Viox (Pfizer) and smoking a marlboro red (Philip Morris) in my Tarus (Ford) on the way to Wal-Mart to pick up some hot chocolate (Nestle) and a soda (Coca-Cola) to drink on the plane (Lockheed Martin) to India where I plan on enslaving a small army of child laborers (Monsanto) that will one day take your tech support job...
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8When did it become so cool to hate the United States? I mean, honestly. It's like it is the norm to just bash the office of the President of the United States and everything about this country. You know what? The U.S. is still the best country in the world, and if you're here and don't like it, leave. I'm very much a conservative Republican, but when Clinton was in office I didn't make fun of him and wish ill of him. Honestly, it's still the office of the President.
I think in general there's just this notion that it's cool to just make fun of authority in general. Kids disrespect their parents and their government. I really do miss the good ol' days when we all actually had pride in our country. - havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No Digg
>Many people have heard of the way that Wal-Mart steamrolls its way into >every possible town, destroying local supermarkets and countless small >businesses.
You can't blame Wal-Mart for providing what people want. People choose to shop at Wal-Mart over local supermarkets and small business. There's probably a good reason for it too. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Load of crap. #1 "evildoer" = Caterpillar, for selling bulldozers to Israel?
Why not put IZH at the top of the list for making the Kalashnikov, which has been used by innumerable Palestinian terrorists to kill Israeli children?
How about putting Toyota on this list, since Toyota pickup trucks seem to be the vehicle of choice for Taliban fighters? - kdivad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Let's get this comment over with: Where's Microsoft!?!?!
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Propaganda, no digg.
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The last thing we need on Digg is a political debate. Many companies are evil, but the average American depends too much on them to boycott and/or stop buying their products, I know I won't stop drinking Coke. Also I hate organizations like Adbusters who do nothing but bitch about wrong-doing corporations, yet do nothing to stop them.
- glassjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no evidence, no references, no digg.
Not that it matters though, since other people are going to digg it, just as a temporary bookmark, and then read the article later (i've been guily of that too when I first joined). So this article will probably stay on the front page for a while.
There should be another button to the left of the article that reads "flag it". - kryptogrowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Evildoers?
Who wrote this Batman. - TuringTest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3God, cue the flamewar between the braindead American nationalist idealogues and their myopic and completely uninformed "liberal" countrymen. The mere mention of the word corporation, bush or any one of a dozen other buzzwords seems to be enough to set this off. Don't you get guys bored of having the same flamewar every week?
- redman5419, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What a bunch of political propoganda. In reference to Coca-Cola... "The company also leads in the abuse of workers' rights, assassinations"...assassinations? Who can take this drivel seriously after a statement like that? It's like calling terrorists "Freedom Fighters". Digg, you're slipping.
- YourParadigm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Since when does the Digg community support this kind of propaganda?
- dhastings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People, this has nothing to do with the United States! These are *multinational* corporations. Anyone who makes this a matter of politics or nationality is sorely missing the point. These are corporations that put money and share values above the welfare of people like you and me. It is mere coincidence that capitalism, the system practiced mostly by 1st world nations (i.e. USA, Canada, UK, Japan, etc.), is where these corporations primarily operate.
I'm not against the system of capitalism, nor the values of the countries that practice it. I AM against the power that corporations hold over our governments (i.e. US -- the people that provide them with their charter to do business). - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's definitely unfortunate that there are no sources cited because I'm sure there is some truth to the statements made. I think we should welcome dissenting voices that show the darker side of the companies we bow down to. There's a lot of salivating when a corporation pumps out a new tech product or to lower costs, but nobody cares about abuses of power that are being undertaken to come up with these things.
Remember that the purpose of a corporation is solely to make money. If a corporation can do something unethical or immoral, it will do it, so long as its effects do not lower the bottom line. It doesn't care. It's not a person with morals or ethics. People within a corporation may not like its acts, but generally they work at a company to make money for themselves and for the company. They're not there to do good.
That said, shouting things out without proof does a disservice to the cause. - jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's Sony? Just because they haven't bulldozed anyone or privatized any nation's water supply, it doesn't mean they're not jerk-asses. If anyone is seriously interested in this, rent the movie "The Corporation". It's really good.
- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Since HALIBURTON is not on this list, it's clear the list is totally INVALID. Talk about evil-doers??! Nothing really takes the cake more than capitalizing on the tragedy of war.
- scolainsola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"There is a reason why they pay so very low, and vehemantly are apposed to unions, they want to keep their workers near impoverished so they can force them to keep buying their stuff since it's so cheap."
Uh, people can choose where they want to work. If they want a min wage job - Wal Mart is the place to be. Nice shiny blue vests in an air condition environment! Can't beat it with a stick. And who cares if they are pro or anti-union? The unions in this country are more corrupt then any other organization in this country. They served a valid purpose in the early 20th century, but are worthless now. - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3being a liberal, I was all ready to jump on the side of this article......but when I scrolled down to see the sources and do my own research....ohh look at that, no sources......awwww no digg
- M-theory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Under Capitalism man exploits man
Under Communism the reverse is true - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Taliban drive Toyota? I hope it's hybrid. The article isn't about U.S. It's about the corporations.
- teabag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uh, what about DeBeers?
- medieval, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article doesn't cite sources for these claims. I'm skeptical but not dismissing it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Congratulations, Diggnation. You are witnessing FIRST-HAND why these corporations continue to thrive. Even though most of the garbage left on this thread is just to get a rise out of people, it's based on one common theme--AMERICANS DON'T CARE. As long as it's not in their living room, the general population will pretend it doesn't exist and go about their daily consumption of corporate products. We're all guilty, despite what our convictions or ideals may be, so complaining about it does nothing but spark a useless debate, much like the one here. Fox News is biased because they are appealing to their viewers. Wal Mart kills small businesses and takes over small towns because small townspeople shop at Wal Mart when they show up. Ford doesn't force anyone to buy a Taurus any more than Wal Mart forces someone in Podunk, Iowa to purchase an HDTV for 30% less than Best Buy (which is 40 miles away and they aren't going to pile the kids into the truck just so they don't have to contribute to 'the man').
Liberals, Conservatives, Communists, Neo-Nazis, Homosexuals, Heterosexuals, Transsexuals, hippies, ALL contribute to corporate profit sooner or later. So sip on your Diet Coke, chow down on your Taco Bell Gordita Crunch, and drive your Volvo SUV down to the local Circuit City so you can buy the Microsoft XBOX 360 your son, with his brand new pair of Nikes, just can't live without. And maybe, just maybe, you'll have enought time later in the day to power up your new Dell Computer long enough to complain about Corporations in your blog sponsored by Yahoo. - ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Alot of this is pure conjecture. While some of it is valid, the Lockheed section didn't actually say anything, just blasting the "military industrial complex". Ummm, ok. Good one. I am liberal and I think that is complete crap. Ford being evil cause their emissions suck? That doesn't make them evil, it just means there are better choices.
Human rights violations are one thing, but companies that employ lots of people and sell products are not bad just because of who they are. What about Halliburton? That is a company that actually has done wrong.
No digg, no digg at all. - plus1gees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...the human right of universal access to HIV/AIDS medicine."(with respect to Pfizer)
When did this become a human right?
This statement, amongst many others in the article, serve to relegate this article to the realm of crackpot-ism. What few valid points and assertions are in the article are eclipsed by comments like the one above. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Zethris:
You're never going to convince anyone of your views with name-calling and exaggerations. I don't subscribe to the right wing or left wing philosophy, and hearing people shout at each other just makes me ignore both sides. - gorndog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I won't share my opinion on that piece of propaganda post, other than to say the entire basket of stocks are doing well!

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why isnt $pple on the list?"
because they came in behind microsoft? - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac El Dorado, hot-*****'-pink, with whaleskin hubcaps and all-leather cow interior and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights... yeah! And I'm gonna drive around in
that baby doing 115 miles an hour, getting 1 mile per gallon, suckin' down quarter pound cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers... yeah! And when I'm done suckin' down
those greaseball burgers I'm gonna toss the styrofoam containers right out the side, and there ain't a goddamn thing anybody can do about it. You know why? Because we got the bombs, that's why... yeah! Two words--nuclear *****'
weapons, OK? Russia, Czechoslovakia, Romania, they can have all the democracy they want...they can have a democracy cakewalk right through the middle of Tienamen Square and it won't make a lick of *****' difference, because we got
the bombs, OK? John Wayne's not dead--he's frozen! And when we find a cure for cancer, we're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why? You ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million times--that's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be. I'm gonna get the Duke and John Casavetti and Sam Peckinpaw and a case of *****' whisky and drive... - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1geneHACKman: Well said. That's just it. Nobody cares. If what we buy is making somebody else's life miserable, but we don't know about it, we don't care, nor do we care to find that out. And when we do find out that it hurt somebody, we seem to deny it, say "hey, we're not so bad, at least this isn't Soviet Russia!", or attack the person stating it ("hey, you're no saint" or "hey hippie, you don't like it, leave the country!"). That doesn't really get us anywhere other than the status quo, which is convenient for all of those who don't care to do anything. And no, I don't know what we're supposed to do about it other than educating people that bad ***** happens in this world still.
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"Peace activist Rachel Corrie was killed by a Caterpillar D-9". Bull! She was killed by her own stupidity and arrogance. She made a choice to stand in front of the oncoming bulldozer.
- xmvhcx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Let me explain to you how this works: you see, the corporations finance Team America, and then Team America goes out... and the corporations sit there in their... in their corporation buildings, and... and, and see, they're all corporation-y... and they make money."
- spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Silly left-wing nutjob rhetoric.
Yes, it would be good if people stoppped buying so many unnecessary SUVs. Is Ford evil for selling what people wanted?
It appears market forces (read, high gas prices) have already started to cure this ridiculous trend. No need for legislation or demonizing of the owners or producers.
Ridiculous... - Fosowp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sure DynCorp sent a letter around to all employees encouraging them to rape children and engage in the slave trade.
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1could you imagine a political digg site? holy lord it would be all out war
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zethris, good for you. I'm not saying that everyone is the same, but the general American population is what it is, and for the most part, they don't care. I just think it's important no matter what you believe that you are a part of it just like everyone else. If you do your research, good for you. I'm sure that you are doing your part to support good corporations. But, really, IS there such a thing? Aren't they all in it for the money? I mean, once a major corporation gets to that point where they have to make certain 'sacrifices' for profit, aren't they going to do it? I mean, they all have shareholders, and all shareholders want the same thing -- PROFIT.
My real point is, sure I think most of the corporations are evil, but I'm not going to waste my time complaining about it when I'll probably turn around today and go grab some Taco Bell and a Coke! WE ALL DO IT!!! Let's not kid ourselves, here. Chances are, the computer you are typing on RIGHT NOW to make your point is made by a corporation, and contains parts made by large corporations. Sooner or later, these same products, once discarded, will end up in a landfill in Africa or some other third world country, and we support it by continuing to consume. - diluuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Read "Atlas Shrugged." It's good.
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not against big corporations, everyone deserves the right to make as much money as possible, but when you make money at your employees expense then that is just wrong. There are plenty of companies, Costco for example, that make tons of money while paying their employees a decent wage.
- scottatdrake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't put much stock in articles that don't cite their sources. Where did all of these "facts" come from? Hmmmm?
No Digg. - Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just a rehash of info from elsewhere and some of it is wrong. For example it says that Roundup is patented, but this isn't true as the patent expired years ago. Anyone writing about Montanto should know this, unless they're just copy/pasting from elsewhere.
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow contratulations Digg community.. I just read 100 comments based on pure emotion and no thought or fact whatsoever....
" ***** ! " ..really why?
" USA is the best -stop hating them .." ... ok but what does that have to do these companies ?
" Terrorist kill too! - it didnt mention terrorists.. does he support Bin Ladn ? " ........ I'm guessing that a human rights organization probably doesnt support terrorism either , but are pretty confident that the $500 billion or so dollars that our government spends against them is sufficient for now
" What people cant make money now ? " .... Judging by these comments Im going to assume I've made alot more money in the stock markey than y'all have , profit isnt the problem , its the ability to profit from things like murder, child labor, private militaries etc that are a wee bit worrisome to thinking people. Any idiot can make money if they are willing to kill - some people actually figure out to make money and remain ethical ..WOW!
" I dont want to read political ***** on digg " ... hey I cant control you, but just know you might as well have written "I'd rather not think about my taxdollars being used to cause pain and suffering....I'm doing fine...***** them"
I dont expect anyone stop shopping at Wal Mart but at least make get informed so that if you ever do have a chance to help people you will able to. - grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... i think these evil corporations have commandeered my ability to spell and use proper grammar...... well so much for being taken seriously ......

- Trigeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg for the political rantings of a lunatic mind
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0scolainsola-while I shouldn't comment on an already discussed issue, I do have to say that while you may not be wrong, what you say is. People sometimes DON'T have a choice. A growing number, in fact. This unemployed percentage that the government in the USA has been raving about also includes minimum wage jobs that do not pay enough to make a living on. That can't truely be considered real employment. Also, it is getting harder and harder to get a job that actually does pay a living wage, especially if you are not a minority in the USA.
- itzac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some of the companies listed were kinda stretching it. Company A rapes and pillages. Company B makes crappy cars... But for the most part this is pertinent information. We like to ignore or dismiss this stuff because otherwise we would have to do something about it.
In response to the first comment. It's not how corrupt or evil the US government may or may not be that is frustrating to people. It's that it's so obviously corrupt, even if just a little, and yet somehow manages to remain in power in a democratic society. Says something about the electorate, don't you think? - scolainsola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1NO DIGG - Socialist propoganda...
