Oh F%! - capiCrimm, on 11/02/2007, -0/+22my interests: little children, bukkake, anal rape, binge drinking, illegal and prescription drugs, streaking, bestiality and little kittens... oh yeah, *strong work ethic*.
- Kurisuku, on 11/02/2007, -1/+21"No."
- Mononuclear, on 11/02/2007, -0/+16#1. Don't use your real name online unless you are in control of the content.
#2. Frequently change your online alias.
#3. Create a myspace/facebook account etc with your real name but don't use it as your main account. Post your drunken party pictures under a different alias
#4. Don't post stupid incriminating things on the internet in the first place. - wisie, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14I thought having your myspace/facebook pop up on google would be the lest thing you'd want? It gives potential employers etc to read about your personal life?
- whataboutdave, on 11/02/2007, -0/+14"Are you/have you been known by any other names?"
- capiCrimm, on 11/01/2007, -0/+13just wait, I've hit F5 about 150 times now.
I am the digg effect. - babar77, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10Rule #1: Don't do stupid *****.
Rule #2: At least make an attempt to act ethically.
FTA: "After all, Wikipedia ranks all over Google, right? Bad move. Not only is it hard to get one approved, but they’re totally unbiased."
That's why I love Wikipedia, because of how unbiased it attempts to be. - ccheath, on 11/01/2007, -1/+9depends how you utilize your profile
you do control the content there, you know - robszol, on 11/01/2007, -0/+7But what about Google cache....The way back machine...etc...
When I'm 50, my kids will be digging up old pages of when their old man got arrested for peeing while naked during a air force show...*sigh* - John370, on 11/01/2007, -1/+7It sure took some pressure off, didn't it Mr. Bush?
- Dirtynoodle111, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5I have the same name as a famous porn director...
- AceLy, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5Dirty Noodle?
- ccheath, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4well you still control what goes on... i guess you have somewhat less control over what comes off, once you put it there
still you've gotta put that content there in the first place - burke, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Just remember everything you do on the internet could be read by anyone you know, and use the name 'rusty shackleford' for any situation where that doesn't appeal to you.
- seans9, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4I am glad a celebrity stole my name.
- jorgepblank, on 11/01/2007, -2/+5Another good example of a stable installation of Wordpress, doesn't seem slow yet.
- Pushkin, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Make sure your friends do NOT tag your picture in their facebook with your real name ;)
- John370, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Of coarse, you could always write an article or blog and find a cleaver way to have it presented at Digg to gain exposure which will in turn maximize your own agenda... Kind of like a troll, of sorts.
- mushiking, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2THere is a porn director called Dirtynoodle :) why does that not suprise me
- frederoil, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Whoa, whoa, whoa. You are telling me the best way to avoid a Google Reputation Nightmare is to basically sign up for EVERY social networking site and make blogs about yourself? That's called "The Best Way to get your future employers not to hire you". No one wants to hire an internet whore that's plastered all over the internet like a Britney Spears crotch shot. Your blog, your myspace, your website.. you're going to forget about them all in a few months and they're going to become overloaded with Cialis and Viagra spam.
- Kitsune818, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Just do what I did, have the same name as a nobel prize winner. Good luck finding me on page 99 of the google results.
- rockrapdude, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2On Firefox : Ctrl-F5 . That will clear your cache and download the page again. It's a killer.
- Speed, on 11/02/2007, -0/+214 (or whatever number we're on): Don't do ***** that's news worthy.
- lohphat, on 11/01/2007, -0/+213. Sue Google for slander and defamation
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -3/+4More ***** fearmongering. 99% of people will never have anyone that matters check Google for them. Not by employers, certainly not by members of the media, not by anyone. Maybe at worst an acquaintance will check out of curisoity.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1A troll.. with a meat cleaver?
- interiot, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1If your profile gets picked up by archive.org, or the site doesn't let you delete or at the very least rename your account, then you don't really control it very much...
- andybeal, on 11/01/2007, -2/+3Changing your name is not a bad idea. If you're not that well known, it can help with something really bad. Heck, just going from Michael to Mike, could help.
- interiot, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Naymz doesn't seem like that great of an idea. For instance, here's the profile of one of the naymz founders: http://www.naymz.com/search/nolan/bayliss/5 Basically, it makes it easy for someone to look at ALL your personal content that's normally hard to find because it's spread across so many different sites.
It's a much better idea to have two separate types of profiles: those in your name, that you keep as untarnished and professional as possible; and those in alternate names that you can be more casual in. Unless you're going to go to the trouble of setting up two separate del.icio.us accounts, two separate Amazon wishlists, two separate Flickr accounts, etc etc etc, it's probably best to not link to these more casual sites from your real name. - michelle123, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Great article! Thanks for the ideas!
- MScrip, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2I found old photographs of my parents when they were first married... shocking!
- madmccoy, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1if you ABSOLUTELY have to do #4, I'd recommend using something like http://invisiblog.net/ or http://fearlessblogging.com -- at least it keeps your "real" blog all pristine and crap.
- Ozymandias42, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I dunno, man. I Wiki'd "Wikipedia," and its entry says that Wikipedia has been criticized for "systemic bias." I trust Wikipedia a lot more than this blogger's opinion because it's so amazingly accurate and unbiased, so I'm going to believe Wikipedia on this one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia - elfuego, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Bah... I'm buried so deep in the blog-link mania from when I did a couple podcasts back in '04 that no one can actually find the real me on google. It' kinda good, I think.
- Sairgem, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1
. - googli, on 06/13/2008, -0/+0I think the following link on that site was more interesting:
buy viagra http://tabletta.com/
buy cialis http://tabletta.org/
buy levitra http://youtubuy.org/ - nphase, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1This advice list didn't seem helpful at all...
- galore, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Yeah, because identifying someone by name is so reliable and unique in a WORLD wide web. LOL!
- TekTrixter, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Dr Cory Doctorow wrote a short story about the power of Google:
http://craphound.com/?p=1902 - Galactabung, on 11/01/2007, -1/+0I see that possibly having some subconscious affects that may materialize in the form of perverted, sexually explicit screen names.
- parkerconrad, on 11/01/2007, -10/+8This is terribly lame. Burying.
- youasked4it, on 11/01/2007, -2/+0At least I don't have to tell my mom I'm gay... http://www.wcreplays.com/forums/member.php?u=62645
- paul9290, on 11/01/2007, -7/+4What the hell is WetPaint com?
Great transparent marketing! - capiCrimm, on 11/02/2007, -10/+2my interests: little children, bukkake, anal rape, binge drinking, illegal and prescription drugs, streaking, bestiality and little kittens... oh yeah, and *strong work ethic*.
- cristiv, on 11/01/2007, -11/+2Great suggestions, thank you.
