Mind you, there's been a rash of murderers with bloggers within the past 2 years. Of course, no matter what they do, they all get *hugs* on their livejournal, even if they melt a busload of nuns. - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I prefer this title: "News Flash: Publicly Admitting Guilt Bad For Defense"
- Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On a twist of "Dont Drink and Derive", "Dont Drink and Blog"
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I dont think a lot of you read the article. The driver was sober. This drunk kid was in the back seat being a tool. Since his sober friends were ignoring his cries for attention he reached up and jerked the wheel. He should be in jail the rest of his life. Of the other two people in the accident, one is dead and the other is paralyzed.
- GORby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reading the article I can only say this:
If they were wearing seat belts, it probably wouldn't have been this bad.
Am I wrong, or is wearing a seat belt in a car not mandatory in the US? - VelvetNightmare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3***** emo kids :P
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, but I think the punishment is too harsh. I can't see destroying an adults entire life because of something they did when they were a kid. Obviously his actions destroyed two other lives, but screwing up his life doesn't fix that.
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Stylerm: He was tried as the driver because he grabbed the wheel. He was drunk and leaning up from the back seat to get attention. It's certainly a loose interpretation of the law, but I agree with this use; he committed a terrible crime and cut short two lives (one with death, the other with paralysis) and his current blog entry shows no remorse, just worry over his image and 'being right'. NO pity for him. No reprieve. Just jail time.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quoth GORby: "Am I wrong, or is wearing a seat belt in a car not mandatory in the US?"
AFAIK New Hampshire is the only state without seat belt laws. So yea, it's mandatory. Though in some states you can't be tickted for not wearing a seat belt unless you're pulled over for another reason ... usually a moving violation of sorts. - Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Am I wrong, or is wearing a seat belt in a car not mandatory in the US?"
It is mandatory (in most if not all states at least), but if they don't choose to wear it, that's their problem! - kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Did anyone else see digitalunltd's comment?
"I don't understand how its the drivers fault? His dumb ***** friends got in the car, no one forced them to go in the car?"
When you drive a vehicle you automatically assume a certain level of responsibility for the safety of the passengers. Getting in an accident is an accident, if they get hurt you likely won't be held responsible.. but if they get in your car and you intentionally loose control of the vehicle resulting in a crash and *killing* one of them? That's no different than taking a blind shot at them with a ***** rifle. But with your logic you could just say "why is it the shooters fault? His ***** friends stepped in front of the bullet."
THINK for a second. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you read the article closely it says that the guy accused doesn't remember turning the wheel and that he only thought he did it because the driver told him later that he did. I'm not saying he didn't do it, but she sure has a huge motive to lie.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly, this is like going to school and telling practically everyone who knows you, then still playing innocent. What a jackarse.
- usafkisser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found the kid's Blurty blog. He removed the "confession" post and, as the article said, posted an explanation reply:
http://www.blurty.com/talkread.bml?journal=mixednutz&itemid=23426 - FoneJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"More than just a prison term, Blake Ranking (the teen who grabbed the steering wheel from the backseat while drunk and killed one person and seriously injured another) should be banned from driving for life. I also think he should be banned from consuming alcohol for life. I know that neither of these will never happen."
A lifetime suspended license and a new, larger anus (5 years of daily stretching) will solve this kid's problems for a while... - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In my country you don't get 15 years for manslaugher, especially if you were a teen at the time of the accident. Yes the guy is a dick for drinking and driving but how will things be better with an extremely harsh sentence? It doesn't help stop the problem.
In the town I lived in my teenage years some kid was drinking and racing with friends. He lost control of his car and hit my friend and her sister waiting at the bus stop. My friend was my sister's best friend. She died on impact and my friend died shortly after in the hospital.
Instead of putting the kid in prison he got a fine and was asked to do community hours. We also put him in a hospital because of the trauma he faced. You know what... the money he paid his car with he got from his brother who got hit by a speeding car and sued.
Last I heard the guy is remorseful and spoke to some teenagers at a local high school. He also does odd volunteer jobs.
Does he deserve 15 years in prison? - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sound - One of those things you would have found out by reading the article, is he has lost his license permanently.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If that's what really happened, He deserves to rot in a prison cell. I dont care if his "character" is shattered, as someone else suggested, you let the *real driver* control the vehicle. Something similar happened to a guy from school. Him and his mates (about 4 too) were in a car, all but the driver drunk. He was in the passenger said and grabbed the wheel and jerked it, and the driver overcompensated (apparently, the story was kept very hush hush) and the car crashed. Certainly not the drivers fault. Fortunately, only the guy causing the issue died (although it still wasn't a good outcome and I really am sad for his family and anyone who knew him), as he did not have a seat belt on and put himself through the window. Everyone else in the car was left with no permanent physical injuries.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blogs don't kill people. idiots with blogs kill people
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That article is riddled with errors.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, lots of teen a using blogs as a personnal journal, writing pretty much anything on there.. they have to realize that lots of people can read em.
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He should have said that a hacker got into his account and wrote the message. That would've been more believable.
Stupid kids, cars are not toys. - Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2good for him. that son of a bitch should plead guilty if he caused it.
- aiiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and lovely myspace blog:

such wonderful people out and about. be sure to wear your anti-snake boots - twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone else find it hilarious that some idiots (I assume from digg, because they're all anonymous) posted replies to his Blurty? Hahaha. Especially the one that calls out the first poster. Hahaha. Good job guys, only 13 months late.
- sound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to the article (it is a good idea to actually read it before commenting on it), the blog confession was only *one* element of the prosecution. There were other witness accounts as well.
More than just a prison term, Blake Ranking (the teen who grabbed the steering wheel from the backseat while drunk and killed one person and seriously injured another) should be banned from driving for life. I also think he should be banned from consuming alcohol for life. I know that neither of these will never happen. - mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a drunk friend I was driving home when he jerked the wheel. Warned him if if happened again no more rides. Guess he called ***** cause he did it again.. I stopped the car.. pulled him out racked him in the balls and made him walk home. Come to think of it he has asked me for a ride since.
- eticket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy was drunk but not driving.. He jerked the steering wheel from the driver causing the crash.. The kid who was driving was thrown from the vehicle when it spun and flipped and ended up
being thrown through the rough of a house and ended up in the attic. It took them 30 minutes to find him no one ever thought to look up in the roof of the house. I happened to be in the ER that night when they came it. What a mess... 5 Years is appropriate plus no DL ever again.. - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... second, he admitted his guilt in a public venue. Third, he lost his license for life and is getting five years in prison.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This kid needs to get some hard time for ***** with the designated driver. That ***** punk.
------------------------------------------
http://fuh-q.com - PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ezkiel: no, it's really pwned, who the ***** is so dumb, to do this? I don't care if he was drunk, i was drunk on friday and on saturday last week, probably I've drunken far more alcohol than this *****, and yet I'm still here, because it's common sense, it's survival instinct, that i won't ***** with that wheel at the front even if I'm drunk and think I can do everything.. and so on.
- ajbalash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alcohol makes it difficult to remember what happened, and impair judgment at the time. But as PAStheLoD said, grabbing the steering wheel is a bad idea. He knew it would get him attention because he knew it would put them all in danger. Why else would he have chosen the steering wheel?
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@stylerm: read the article again. it clearly says that he blew a .185
the point of the story of this: in the us, the drinking age is 21. is it stupid? yeah pretty much. but he 1) broke the law by drinking underage, and 2) broke the law by driving with over double the legal limit of blood alcohol content.
in the states, if you are under 21 and you blow anything but .000 while driving, you can get a DUI, have your license suspended for something like 6 months, pay something like 2,000 in fees and fines. it is pretty sad that this sad poor kid has to pay a price for something that is already destroying him inside, but the fact is that there is no reason he should have tried to drive.
anyone who thinks that they can drive drunk just fine is playing russian roulette with their own life, and that of everyone on the road. - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People, PLEASE read the F'n article! He wasn't in the driver's seat, he grabbed the wheel from the back seat because he wasn't getting attention. Second,
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Headzoo: Does being slightly less than the "magic age of adulthood" make him any less responsible for his actions? This isn't a child we're talking about. A five-year prison term with a life ban on driving is *not* destroying his life. It's fit punishment for destroying others' lives. Five years isn't *enough* time in my opinion.
- ripter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Using a Blog as evidence? In this case its good because the kid killed someone an injured another then he has the gull to plead not guilty!
But will other lawyers abuse using blogs as evidence? Like if a guy breaks up with a girl so she starts posting in a blog about him raping her or any other illegal activity which he didn't do. then the lawyer uses this blog as 'proof' that he committed said acts. That could be very bad. - jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a blogger in the same county (Lake County Florida). You can pretty much consider our area to be "in the country". Eustis is about 60 miles northeast of Orlando basically in the middle of nowhere. Apparently teenage kids drive too crazy up in that direction. I live closer to Orlando where life is a bit more civilized. Anyway, here's my recap/take on the story:
http://schlerplotti.typepad.com/lake_county_florida/2005/12/lake_county_blo.html - bgammill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This hits the heart, 5 people died at my high school this year.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"@ezkiel: no, it's really pwned, who the ***** is so dumb, to do this? No pwned is when im playing a computer game and frag someone in a way that is humiliating to them.
Real people died and I see it far too often at my school too. It's so tragic kids doing dumb ***** when they are drunk and in cars. This case is even worse because he killed the DD. and another sober passenger.
The idiot does deserve it but its not funny.
the name was blake so im assuming male. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Did anyone here read the article/blog entry? To me it was very apparent that it was a girl who jerked the wheel not a guy?"
Yeah it's actually very hard to tell... It's either a girl or a gay guy, and I'm leaning towards girl... Although the article says guy... - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why didn't the first version of this post make it to the front page?

http://fuh-q.com - exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does he deserve 15 years in prison?"
Yes. - nouhad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does he deserve 15 years in prison?"
No. More. - exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0News article: "Although Ranking later retracted his words -- deleting them from the blog and penning an explanation -- they came back to haunt [him],"
And on the site he calls the kid his boyfriend. - MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@digitalunltd : "I don't understand how its the terrorists fault? The dumb ***** travelers got in the plane, no one forced them to go in the plane?"
Sorry I just had to say this. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's a little quote from Blake's blog:
"And Jason IS the type of person who would be nice to someone even if he didn't like them -- that was one of his most endearing qualities. How easily people forget that he was my BOYFRIEND."
WTF? So the driver and the drunk kid in the back were dating? I think this kid is going to like prison from the sound of it. This whiny bitch deserves everything that's coming to him. First he made the mistake of acting like an idiot and tried to get attention by grabbing the wheel of the driver, resulting in one person being killed and the other person being seriously injured. STRIKE ONE. THEN he tries to get more attention (possibly sympathy) from random people by posting a freaking DIARY that chronicled the events. STRIKE TWO. Then he retracts whatever he wrote now that he realized the police were reading his site and he's pretty much screwed for life. STRIKE THREE.
Darwin Award winner. - aiiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that guy sounds like a creepy, backstabbing, lying, desperate little prick who'd sell you bj's from his mom if he thought he could get away with it. Not quite human, more like something that waits in the dark for it's next victim, under some rock.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, this is about as smart as doing a podcast while getting buzzed and telling everyone you download movies. I wonder if that person would be surprised if the RIAA decided to make an example of him someday.
- Dwebtron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0roffle @ the guy that wrote:
Hello. Take it from an older person who's been through a great deal: You're sounding like a total ass. Grow up, tool. - EV1CR8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just so some of you know the justice system isn't supposed to CODDLE the idiots who cause deaths it's supposed to PUNISH them. If their lives are ruined because of this punishment,So be it. Lesson for the next drunk idiot who is in control of a vehicle.
