- AdamWeeden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any REAL news sites covering this? I'd rather not trust my information from a tabloid site that was once the source of the "hulk penis" scandal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why do people feel a need to be PAID for doing something positive as a member of society? Stop being greedy, he shouldn't have received anything for what he did. When there is a wrong being perpetrated, addressing it and eliminating it doesn't require a reward. Feel good about doing something POSITIVE in the society in which you live rather than needing a material gift to make you feel that you did the right thing.

My thoughts exactly...dont belive it unless I see some other news about it. - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh come on. This came from The Sun. Do you guys really believe this story is for real? I tried to search for news from other sites on this. No one has it acept the Sun. Nothing is exclusive on the net. If it were for real, this would have been posted on a credible news source.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@phoenixfury - Fake ATM fronts are a common practice, crooks do get away with it, and it does work. There is no reason to doubt the story.
@Moocat - No one is saying anything about having cameras on every street corner. ATMs generally have cameras built into them no matter what country it's in.
Screw this kid. He didn't know when he started picking at it that the "crooks" were right around the corner. He didn't do anything brave. He probably got it off, saw some guys running towards him, and turned and ran home. Doesn't sound like bravery to me.
I agree with others, how about doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do, not because you expect a reward. True, the bank kind of insulted him by sending a cheap calculator, but he shouldn't be insulted if they didn't send anything at all. A thank you letter should have been more than enough. - the_wally, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey the Cheat, have a trophy
- Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what, you only do good deeds if there is a monetary reward for it? I'm with the bank on this one. The crooks were out to get HIS money anyway. He saved himself the hassle of getting a new bank account and ATM card. The bank didn't have to give him anything, now he wants to milk them out of more by telling the world his story?
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't buy it. Most outside ATM's have camera's on them now, so I don't see how these guys could have installed this device with out a camera recording them. Also the Sun is a well known Tabloid site. I'd be all for Digg automatically blocking all known tabloid sites from being dugg at all. Speculation about something is one thing, but making up stories is completely another. No digg.
- doant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why don't we send that bank some nice emails? I toughed we where dutch ( I am from the Netherlands) but the British are totally over the top dutch wait they are Scottish
time to act power to the people.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do people feel a need to be PAID for doing something positive as a member of society? ... Feel good about doing something POSITIVE in the society in which you live rather than needing a material gift to make you feel that you did the right thing.
Exactly. It's the ME ME ME mentality that grips people like a vice. I think they're just incapable of doing something good and actually feeling satisfaction from the good deed itself. - Half-Fast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"NatWest, owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland — which is worth £54.9BILLION — said they would reward the teenager for his bravery."
Hope all the diggers in the UK take notice of the name and "reward" this bank the same way they rewarded this kid. Take your business elsewhere. I would after reading this. - agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want that calculator
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How exactly was he "BRAVE"?
- JanesDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What American readers don't appreciate is that 'tabloid' has a different meaning in Britain and the US. In the US, (supermarket) tabloids really do make up, or fabricate stories and photographs. In Britain the tabloids, although they sometimes put a sensational spin on a story and use 3rd grade-level language, generally report true stories.
...The Sun also has ***** on Page 3 every day ;-) - uberphildo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sounds like something that would have come from The Onion.
- jmyhasuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is he entitled to anything? He did what was right, that should be peace of mind should be reward enough.
- turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4yea.....stop stealing s**t from www.fark.com
no dig. be original, at least dont steal the headline. - buss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regardless of whether or not this is real or not, this reminds me of a flaw in my old high school's online grade viewer. One of my friends was messing around and found the log files. The log was about 15 megs of the entire school district's students' social security numbers. He told the school about it, and to keep him quiet they gave him two movie tickets. Obviously, he told me and a bunch of his other friends. We had fun with it for about a year, then I figured out that I could google the partial filename of the log file and found it for other schools using the same system. I figured at that point I should do something. I told a teacher and made sure it went through all the red tape to get it fixed because my SS# was there too. Did I get a reward? Hell no.
Eventually the company fixed the problem. Now that the log files are no longer accessible via google, I can say who the company was. The program was Pinnacle Internet Viewer by Excelsior Software. See http://www.excelsiorsoftware.com/solutions/sys_pinn.aspx . I thought about going to the paper because of the real and very serious implications of this bug, but I decided to wait to see if anything was done.
I still have the log file from my district. Do you have any idea how fun it is to randomly IM people I know who went to my high school with their social security numbers? Good times. - drysz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So if the kid knew he had no prospect of any reward, would he have done anything?
- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm curious as to the intricacies of how this faceplate-type device works. Anyone know any details about these devices?

here's a little info http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/atmcamera.asp - chregu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The UK is not known for installing a camera in every outlet of every street corner everywhere in order to "catch criminals" (read: they like some privacy"
You're kidding, right? :) - wallryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id flip....
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reward of a calculator I would say is insulting. Now if they did not want to spend money on him or something, that would of been a better idea.
I like he did it without calling the police because of what was said earlier, the police do take a while for such activities to be done. More people would of been harmed in the process. and now that it is known the scum bags in charge will most likely not be able to do it again. - skell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 'right' thing the kid should've done was report the incident ASAP to the proper authorities. Instead, he supposedly ripped off the fake device, and ran with it? Why such the hassle? Young and dumb perhaps? He had to outrun the crooks who were ready to put a big beat-down on him, maybe even kill him.
I agree with the many of you that he should not expect a reward, but I must say that what the bank allegedly gave him was more of an insult than no reward at all. What if the kid was killed by the crooks? Would the bank offer their thanks and condolances to his parents by giving them a calculator too? Would they even pay for his funeral? hmm. - turdferguson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He shouldn't expect a reward for doing his civic duty. And he really should have gone straight to the police like the bank said, what if the crooks caught up to him? I can tell you, he'd have no means of defending himself thanks to England's Orwellian weapons laws. Or what if the criminals just sped off and were never caught? What they really should have given him was a plaque or certificate thanking him for his (somewhat foolish) bravery.
- splitsixty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why did the kid run home first?? Why was he holding evidence in the picture??
Seems strange to me. - M-theory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And now,for the price of a calculator, his name and face are plastered everywhere for all the criminal world to see... jeeze why not publish his address too!
- samfrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's like the digg horde could put a legit business out." - I like the idea of being part of a horde that should be feared. ;)
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops, I accidentally hit submit. As I was saying, if anything, this kid helped the situation but also screwed it up. If he had done the right thing he would have left it and contacted the police and then they could have busted the scammers right there. Now who knows where the scammers are and the police are going to have to investige and track them down. Maybe not even catching them. So while the kid helped rid one ATM of the samming device, those guys are on the loose and will probably strike again somewhere else.
- cornfused, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a bunch of cheap-asses. The bad press they get from this will make that calculator look all the more cheap.
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theyre always trying to pinch theyre pennies...***** greddy *****, give the kid what he deserves.
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people expect monetary rewwards for everything they do. Sure he saved the bank money, but it was the right thing to do either way because he saved a lot of people money and hassle and possibly lead to an arrest of some scumbags trying to steal peoples credit card information. That should be reward enough, if anyone is greedy it's this guy for EXPECTING a monetary reward. Sure he put his health in danger, that was his fault. If he knew enough to find out that was on there he probably knows the basics of how the scammers do it and should know that they are close by. He should have kept it on there and contacted the bank and police. That way maybe the police could have caught the scammers right there, instead now they chased this kid and then who knows where they are now
- kryptogrowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he put it there himself
- gtg697w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0people...this is the SUN ITS A TABLOID NO DIGG
- el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ AltPlus4
So, you have to digg a story BEFORE you can comment? I didn't know you have to "earn" your right to comment. Thanks for setting everyone straight. Perhaps someone comments and reports the story as lame or a dupe. Perhaps some people feel there is very few stories worth digging. Take me for example, I wouldn't have dugg a single thing you have posted to date. - duster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if this article were real... I don't think the point is that the kid felt like he deserved a reward, but if you're going to give a reward, you should probably do better than a piece of ***** calculator.
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regardless of the legitimacy of the story, I have to both agree and disagree with the major sentiment here.
Yes, he should have done it for the good feeling, not the reward. That's a bad reason to go about it. He should have expected nothing but a thank you.
HOWEVER, they decided to send him a gift. And what they sent was junk. That's insulting if you ask me. I'd rather get no gift but a thank you and maybe a certificate of bravery, than a cheap piece of crap. - LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so he did this for the money? That is the problem these days anyone wants to be a hero..for a price.
He could have just told the bank security or called the cops..but he rather have put himself in danger. Either he wanted a reward or wanted the device so he could use it..lol. - differentangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember reading a story 15 years ago in the states that a man returned 10,000 dollars in small bills (10s & 20’s) that fell out of a Brinks truck and all he got was a plaque.
- StarSaber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that kid is being a bit of a turd. He should be happy he did a good deed. Reward should not be his concern. I give him credit for doing good, and I will digg this.
- hiredgun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now that he exposed his face and his name, the crooks will probably come back and kick his ass
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The UK is not known for installing a camera in every outlet of every street corner everywhere in order to "catch criminals" (read: they like some privacy and sometimes they're a little slower on the tech curve)."
Um.... are you an American? wow. - esteban, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another vote for Sun story = no digg, the Sun has no place in commenting on morality. Fook the Sun and all the read it.
- ColMustard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys should see what the bank gives its employees for Christmas gifts.
- quietk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he should have kept that thing and put it on another ATM and used it himself.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you going to give him a calc, give him a TI-89 or something, not some dolar store crap!
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Newfangled adding machines!
