- Xeth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57It takes a certain mentality to lock someone in a pit and then leave them a cell phone with which to call for help.
- jgtg32a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28yeah he's probably one of the top posters here

If you've read TFA, you'd know she used the kidnapper's cellphone. - anonydigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23So you mean, you are pissed that the girl got rescued?
What do you have in your basement? - Shayughul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It was the phone company. In the article they said they used the tower to locate the general area the msg came from.
What I want to know is how the place was booby trapped. They mention it was but never say how. I mean the said the girl was not tied up and standing in the doorway to the bunker but she didn't walk out.
WTF was keeping her in there? - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18yeah, I was curious about that too. all I can think of is that she had no damn clue where she was and it may have seemed safer to her to stay there than get lost in the woods forever.
Altho, I'm curious as to why the guy left the phone behind for her... and why she didn't just call for help. Or did she sneak a txt in while he wasn't aware? Then again, I'm sure the police want to know this too and haven't started questioning her yet. - smazany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Well, that is the wierdest thing I have read in awhile. I think the weirdest part of it all is that the guy dug a tunnel from under his bed to a shed for a quick escape. Wow. Just, wow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17The guy dug the bunker by hand, and then made that tunnel by hand too. He's a good digger, I'll give him that.
- codeblind, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20You would think this would not need to be said, but apparently it does: it is NOT okay to kidnap young girls. It is WRONG. Do not do it.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20buahahahahahaha
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+13http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2454745&page=2 - follow up to this story, he's been arrested.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14 I'd like to put the criminal in his hand-dug, booby-trapped bunker for about 50 years for doing this and see how much HE likes it.
- Blastcaps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Digg comment of the year right there.
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15This reminds me of the story on Diggnation where the men rescue themselves with a text message from an island. Awesome!
- JonatanP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17hahaha, that's just wrong.
- InsaneHomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you would'nt have to wonder if you'd bothered to actually read the story?
- yourowndisaster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14WTF.. i wanna see that care to post it.
- sixdays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dude, it was the kidnappers phone :D
- bot001220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7BREAKING NEWS!
The kidnapper has been identified as the once-top digger known as P9! - villarrealsj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I wonder what the text messages said to her mother..?
I wonder if it was the text messages or the phone company that helpled find the girl..?
Great digg though! - b3n3llis, on 07/26/2009, -4/+9In Austrian Basement Kidnappers Weekly, Rule No.3 states: 'It places the cellphone in the basket.'
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's a booby-trap?
- LADIESCREVICE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6In the article they said he disoriented her by walking all round the area, so she had no sense of direction. But still...I would've left the first second I had the chance.
- jeffbotas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If it's the same story I'm thinking of, I don't think they were on an island. They were in a boat that was swept away by a strong current off the coast of Australia. They survived for something like 2 weeks until they got a strong enough signal to send the text message.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can text better than you can call, because sending text is smaller, and doesn't have to be in real time.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The female equivalent of having your nuts in a vice.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Rule #4: If subject does not comply, apply hose again.
- ne0shell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow what an insightful and intelligent post you made....moron.
There's a huge difference between an investigation for a missing child (and I'm sure they were able to get a warrant and even if not in the case of a call from the victim for rescue it would be considered "hot pursuit" most likely and not require a warrant).
I guess your "solution" would be to just track everyone's cell phones and listen to everyone's phone calls in the hope we catch some "chatter" about the crime. Then we could pick up the people our computers caught talking about the crime and send them off to torture camps until one of them gives up the location of the girl.
See that's called making a ***** case to make your position on an issue look bad. For another example go back and read your post. - ne0shell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know why I have a feeling this kind of ***** happens all the time in South Carolina, (didn't Jerry Springer get a really high percentage of his real guests from trailer parks there?)
I'm sure the guy just has issues and all that but he DID have a 14 year old in a hole with home-made grenades for an alarm system. You know, just saying. - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3while both of your comments are unbelievably insensitive, you get +diggs for funny-ness
btw: the digg spellchecker considers "+diggs" as a legitimate word :D - Mystikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cell phones save the day...again.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The pit was 15 feet deep. That was enough to keep her.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can we not use the phrase "booby-trapped" when talking about young female sex slaves? It's just too close to a bad pun.
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im not saying he doesnt have problems, but im wondering how much of the information the media is reporting is actually accurate. the guy just doesnt seem smart enough to make a bomb.... imagine a 12 year old setting up a booby trap...i think thats about the extent of that.
- gpsblake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true h0dg3s..
For one thing the ditch was 8 feet deep. The second thing is he told her the ditch was boobytrapped, which turned out to be correct. Also, she probably would be scared to try to climb out fearing he would be nearby and see it.
What bothers me is that the criminal had slipped by the dragnet and attempted to carjack a woman at 2:30 in the morning, which tipped the police to his whereabouts. - ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1relax. Maybe it was this guy's first time. We all make mistakes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or was the phone hidden REALLY well?
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as i hate to admit it. i know the guy who did this, hes always been weird and mainly spoiled his whole life. hes been digging holes like this since he was young and one time his mother found out and freaked that it might cave in. but he said he had a pvc pipe to breath if it did.....lol. we call him vince digger. from what ive found out he met the girl online and she willingly went with him which makes me sick when i read "She's a good girl. … We never believed that she ran away." although he does deserve to have some punishment for messing around with some 14 year old, i heard the cops beat the crap out of him and broke his arm (unsure about the arm but i wouldnt be suprised). also they arrested his mother which is ludacris.
as for the sexual charge on the 12 year old girl, i believe it was his girlfriends daughter, and when they broke up she filed that against him.
take my information as a grain of salt... but im really not suprised if i am 100%, the media these days just want a headline. i mean come on, hes stupid but how would she get his cell phone and he didnt tie her up from the story, in south carolina you should be able to walk in any direction and find a house eventually. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good comment.
Most people wouldn't have thought of what kind of revenge they'd like to get on the kidnapper. I'm not even sure what everyone thought of his actions. There might be some pro-kidnapper and anti-kidnapper sentiment to be heard.
It's good to know which side you come down on. - aacidusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thankfully she had signal...
- salinemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why am I envisioning a Cingular ad with several girls in adjoining tunnels that get progressively deeper?
"raising the dead"....... - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do news sites bother running photos at all if they're going to put up postage-stamp sized images and no 'enarge'?
- Factionrider, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4If anyone lives in the south and gets John boy and Billy, I bet this makes dumb crook news.
- sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2welp, the digg association explains why this was filed under "Tech Industry News"
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i'm sure cell phone tracking is something that liberals wouldn't want- tracking people's cellphones, its invasion of privacy! and, of course, its all bush's fault! wire-tapping!
- Phrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please let this be a lesson to all you parents.
1. Find a way to give your kids a cell phone for emergencies. I know it can cost alot but, with some communication and research I think you can find a cell plan that is affordable, reliable and will not be abused by your child (my daughter can't even talk yet and she is constantly stealing my cell phone ;) ). IMHO, I would be willing to shell out a few bucks in order to make sure I had a way to locate my daughter in an emergency.
2. Teach your kids to not blindly trust authority figures. Teachers, police, priests, nuns, firefighters, etc. can all be bad people or impersonated by bad people. If any stranger approaches them, no matter what uniform they may be wearing, teach them to move as quickly as possible to a well lit public place with as many people as possible, preferably one with security cameras. Even if a cop car tries to pull you over, it is always a good idea to procede slowly and find a safe place to stop. A real police officer will understand that you are just trying to be safe and not making a get away. - SocketNine3Nine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"lol mom, trpd n bnkr. omg, hlp." lmfao its a bit late but its so freaken funny, and also horrible. Nice Swazo.
- Phrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They mentioned that she was threatened with home-made grenades. Perhaps that had something to do with the boobytrap. He may have put them on trip wires around the bunker or atleast told her that he did.
