- caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No desktop sharing support? That's the #1 reason we use WebEx at my place of employment.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why does everything have to be a "killer"? This has to be one of the most annoying headlines ever. I strangely believe Webex will continue to exist beyond the release of this program.
But the iPod, nope, that's going to be killed off any day now. - CoffeeChaosFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can't wait to try it out, WebEx has never been really user friendly in the non-Windows world.
- pwinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I forgot Webex even did remote slideshows. Is that what people actually use it for? We use it for remote desktop control, which this doesn't do. :-(
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3simplesimon: Actually it's not a dupe. This digg links to the Techcrunch review of the app you linked to.
- bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I have seen and read on teamslide's website and demo, it's very limiting and not comparable to WebEx, unless you use WebEx for viewing PowerPoint slides only, which is all teamslide can do at this point. At my work I have used WebEx to share a whiteboard, desktop, other applications, and take polls of users. teamslide, according to their website, has been tested on 5 to 20 users. It doesn't support slide transitions or animations since the PowerPoint file must be converted into a series of JPEGs. And here's what they said in their FAQ about server-side implementation:
"Why must PHP "safe_mode" be turned off? This sounds scary.
Not at all. PHP's so-called "safe_mode" directive is widely acknowledged to be crap and prevents basic operations such as saving and reading from a file in the application subdirectory." - Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article is incorrect. GoToMeeting does NOT charge any kind of usage fee above the monthly (or discounted annual) subscription.
I've used all of the mentioned products ...and I will try this one too. So far there isn't one comparable to any of the "GoTo" products offered by Citrix Online, especially GoToMeeting. - RobGamble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2VNC is choppy and the refreshes are a nightmare. We (managers at my company) would MUCH rather pay for GoToMeeting and have fast, responsive and reliable service. Sometimes the free stuff just isn't as good as the commercial stuff.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We use web ex for the same thing. Since Teamslide doesn't seem to do remote desktop then It wont exactly "kill" web ex. What are the benefits of using it besides the price?
- buildmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not going to replace web ex here, we use it for sharing desktops so we can do muti-site pair programming. with Skype to carry voice its a dream (if a little buggy at times)
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3simplesimon: you're assuming people around here don't value Techcrunch's insights and opinions. I'm sure many don't, but as you can see, many do as well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no digg for the upteenth time I've seen the term "######## KILLER" in the title.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3simplesimon: I did not intend to pass this off as a direct link. I don't think I've mislead anyone with this link. I do believe you are a flaming crybaby and agree that this is a fundamental problem with Digg.
- sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Have you ever used NetMeeting? It's the worst product MS has made. I think MS Bob is better than it. Everytime I attend an all-hands meeting and I see the NetMeeting interface on projector screen, I want to kill myself.
- AntiMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This thing is lame, it only allows you to share slides and such, not desktops.
- anakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Genesys conferencing. http://www.genesys.com
It allows application sharing, and doesn't require the people joining your meeting to install any software. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EXACTLY - if you are limited to mock powerpoint presentation, this is not a "WebEx Killer" nor is it ANYWHERE near it, bad title, misinformation.
- damonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use GatherPlace. www.gatherplace.net They allow you to share a specific application and are cross-platform (Windows, Mac and Linux). They viewers only need to have Java installed. The best part is the cost - $49/month for unlimited "meetings."
- skabber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.raindance.com/ is so much better than WebEx. And this article says in order to use TeamSlide you need to install a server on your end.
No Thanks. - 511pf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with the above. Without remote control (or even app sharing) this thing isn't good for tech support or software demos, which are the two things that make WebEx really useful.
- liquidedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely not a WebEx killer, though a good alternative.
WebEx does well with large companies because of the lack of administration required, bringing that back in-house isn't appealing for a lot of companies.
If anything Macromedia's Breeze product is going to blow the doors off of WebEx. - Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a few people here have already mentioned the biggest thing I use webex for is remote support, and I have not been able to find anything else that even comes close. If anyone knows of anything I would love to hear about it. I know you can hack something together with vnc and listen mode, but that's very tacky, and still requires vnc client installed on all the desktops (although the new ultraVNC thing looks promising, but it's still locked to a single ip so you'd have to have one for every support person and have proper ports forwarded etc.)
I'd love to see a good alternative to webex for remote support. I guess you could use logmein or gotomypc, but neither is really designed for the purpose and if you scale at all then they are just as expensive as webex. - sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The author is a loser. He sucks at writing and he sucks at life. Just look at him get trashed in the comments. And these are not just people talking smack, they are giving actual factual rebuttals to his claims. TechCrunch is sensationalism at its best. They need to hire people who actually know what they are talking about.
Tip: If you want some alternatives, just look at the user comments. There are at least half a dozen available for you to choose from. - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Also, it's highly rumored that GoToMeeting will be cross platform later this year. Screensharing is what people want, and right now only the subscription-based providers are doing this, and exactly NONE of them are cross-platform, which is lame.
The first company in this space to support Mac will make a lot of creative pros like me happy! - thomasp9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi, I am Patrick and with telepark, the developers of teamslide. Thank you for all your comments, all comments. Just to clear up a couple of misconceptions. teamslide is not about desktop sharing, never has been and never will be. It is about doing one thing really well instead: live web presentations. Without plug-in's, without Java and without Flash, purely browser-based. And purely browser-based implies "no desktop sharing" because there simply is no way technically.
Needless to say, we never claimed teamslide to be a "Webex killer" but we love it (our product) nonetheless. The user experience is great, it's fast and reliable. But whats best: you can have it as a hosted service but you *can* also buy it (for only US$99) to install on your own PHP-enabled web space. Full source included (hey, it's PHP, no database required, both PHP4 and PHP5 auto-sensing). Very modular, multilingual by design. And that means it is the only web app of this kind you actually can customize to your corporate/business design for your own use.
Best from Munich
Patrick

PS: It also means, you can become an authorized teamslide reseller. Drop us a note at the teamslide.com website. - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why? Could you give me a reason?
- junksingh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I landed on this, very cool and interesting project for desktop sharing. WebEx seems over rated looking and all the alternates.
Just clipping text from that site.
What is ShowMyPC.com?
This is an http://www.showmypc.com/ open source Remote PC access project, an alternative to subscription
based sites like WebEx or Gotomypc.
ShowMyPC uses SSH port forwarding mechanism using Open Source SSH client plink
and VNC Remote access software. Users can use there own middle SSH server.
No registration, no logins, all open and free. Read More. - jackpoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you like GoToMeeting, you will love MeetMeNow from WebEx (www.meetmenow.com). I think it is cheaper then GoToMeeting and better!
- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not so friendly in the windows world either... it is our corporate standard, but I have my own gotomeeting account that I use whenever possible... I've been in numerous meetings with some really smart people that have a hard time figuring out the WebEx interface. Too bad that microsoft bought placeware, they will probably screw it up.
- pagefault, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm not sure what your talking about, not friendly. You don't compare an application to Windows and expect it to work all over. Webex uses ActiveX on Windows which is built into the OS to make it operate faster, better. I've used Webex on all computers from Linux, Mac OSX, Windows, and eliniks (of course this one didn't work) but it's the friendliest cross platform sharing program out. The problem is that they know it, and they price gouge per concurrent seat for it.
- Illuminati44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(MikeyThek)
Most common end users don't know how to use either Skype or VNC, and when you need to have them do something specific in Outlook, or change options in general... it's easier to just take over the computer from the help desk... WebEx allows you to do just that with minimal thought on the end users side. - techoftheday, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I recently switched from LogMeIn Rescue to Techinline Remote Desktop (www.techinline.com). At a fraction of what I used to pay, I find it to be the perfect solution for remote supporting my clients. First of all, nobody has to install anything on either end, and you could both take control of the remote desktop, as well as share your own desktop with the client. Since it is browser based, you could run it from any computer. I heard they're also working on a major upgrade and will be adding new features over the next few weeks, so it's only going to get better
- lambda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2NetMeeting comes with Windows, works with Linux (Ekiga), is based on open standards (H.323) and is free. Oh, and it does VoIP, chat, application/desktop sharing, file transfer, whiteboard, supports encryption and authentication, unlimited peers, and it's peer to peer (no server needed).
Just run "conf.exe". - resourceguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An excellent alternative to Teamslide is Vyew.com. I haven't done much research on Teamslide, but it appears to have some of the same functionality as Vyew (except that Vyew.com is totally free). In addition to power point presentations, Vyew provides real-time whiteboarding, 1-click screen capture/share, support for up to 20 attendees and 25mb of free storage. They've got a handy feature called session persistence (like with mm/adobe breeze), where all your files/notes/whatever are saved in your meeting room. When you leave and come back, everything is exactly as you left it.
GoTomeeting and WebEx are great products, but for a free, easy to use alternative, try Vyew. - jackpoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WebEx already supports Mac. Creative people....go try it out. They have free trial.
- rrosenhagen, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0how do you like Techinline? How does it compare to others?
- joeb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you ever noticed that anything reffered to as a FILL IN THE BLANK "killer" is always doomed.
- Infobahn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Big Digg. I am looking at signing on to one of these products for my company in the next few days. The article, and comments, have helped me greatly in broadening my search!
- mweels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GoTo Meeting has hit the nail on the head with their product. First it just works, all the time. Second, it rasterizes the screen so screen resources can be viewed by viewers. Third, it just works (did I mention that).
Anyone using WebEx that has not tried Goto meeting you really should. I could care less about this company because GoTo Meeting has done a perfect job.
Mardo - DigitalPanther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually Citrix Online (the people who make GoToMyPC and GoToMeeting) also make a program called GoToAssist which is speciffically designed for Remote support.
- DumbLittleMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Genesys crashed 75% of the time we tried to use it so we went with Live Meeting and occassionally use webex
- mkrygeri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I use gotomeeting in support calls all the time. I doubt an onlont slideshow would boost by productivity.
But it DOES use AJAX, how can I lose? - byerspc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wasn't this on the front page just the other day--- why is it back
- brilliant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is it just me or are you guys sick of " [insert your favorite application]-killer" kinda articles.
OK once in a while we might actually see something that is really of substance but Teamslide is NOT a WebEX or Powerpoint killer, far from it ! Its basically no different from any other javascript slideshow except that it has an "AJAX" tag attached to it. - mweels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0NetMeeting sucks and never works, how long have they been working on that product, 200 years?
- Moly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I don't get it. Why not just use VNC and Skype?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Ok so a link to a blog with a link to the app is much more amazing than a direct link. I don't get it at all. We create RSS feeds so we don't have to waste our time yet we post links to links to links.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1That's all fair and well but where if any mention is that this is a review of the product? You are passing this off as a direct link which would be a dupe. If you had stated that it was a review that would make more sense. You all will keep flaming my comments and say I'm a crybaby but this is a fundamental problem with Digg.
- stan205, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3To bad your headline sucked
