- microbreak, on 01/21/2008, -3/+42WTF is the Hugh Thompson Show?
Looks pretty lame.
And his band sucks.
And SCREW AT&T. - drmorley, on 01/21/2008, -2/+29Vote with your $$ people. If you don't like it take your business elsewhere....Oh wait, Time Warner bills by the byte and Comcast has an invisible ceiling on their bandwidth limits and blocks bitorrent.

AT&T Announcer: The Hugh Thompson show, brought to you by AT&T. - amnesiac096, on 01/21/2008, -2/+17Hugh Thompson seems like a tool, he doesn't answer his questions and sounds like an idiot... who is he anyway?
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -2/+15Hugh Thompson is a ***** idiot. What a sold out loser. Security? ***** a t and t
- buddamus, on 01/21/2008, -0/+12(Message deleted by AT&T)
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -0/+11You dont have to vote to haved someone stop a company from breaking the constitution. What att has done for the government is illegal.
- ZicklePop, on 01/21/2008, -1/+9I've heard nothing positive about the internet or cellular service of Canada. I hear a lot of people are stuck with the bandwidth filtering Rogers. Please, I beg, prove me wrong!
- xXShadowstormXx, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7Are you serious? AT&T is a huge corporation. They're not going anywhere.
- Rekzai, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5I'm starting up a new ISP, who's with me?
- cybrguy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Ok, in this order we demand:
1. A sample of this "better beer"
2. A ... "convincing arguement" for better weed
3. A picture of the "better women"
4. A torrent with some of # 3 hosted by you and your superior connection. - theghoul, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Well done. We need a isp who is net neutral. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening.
- thestaton, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4If Hilary Clinton wins the election I'll be looking to transfer citizenships.
- jaybo1001, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Better fishing too!
- plusmedic, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3AT&T are a Tier 1 peer. You can't "vote with your $$" because you have no say in the matter. They provide lines that make up the backbone of the Internet itself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peering
https://www.peeringdb.com - Thing2, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3There's nowhere ELSE TO GO!!! They control the lines comcast and Time warner use....there aren't alternatives sir...they aren't running competitve lines next to each other....each area has their own telco whom runs the lines....so talk of taking it elsewhere.....is unfortunately not viable.
- theghoul, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3For now. There were a few nasty laws nearly enacted.
- cybrguy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3This will be an amusing battle, I wonder if it will drive ethical ISPs to cut peering agreements and re-route traffic over non-AT&T channels. It would be really funny if this ended up killing off AT&T as we know them. But in the end, its more likely that the government would bail them out anyway. They cant have their favorite snitch/telcom dying on them.
- Thomaschaaf, on 01/21/2008, -3/+6His(Hugh Thompson) voice is really annoying... http://techchannel.att.com/site/home/index.cfm argh
- Oysterville, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Whether you have AT&T as an ISP or not will not keep them from searching your packets. Lest we forget that the NSA has been using them to search our packets now for YEARS at the regional hubs.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't take your business elsewhere for morality reasons. I'm just saying that you shouldn't feel that your Internet traffic is safe when you do. - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4owned
- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2>> Is this really about copyright? Perhaps.
>> But letting people know you are spying, puts a damper on speech. Fear keeps people in line. The same thing may be what they hope for movies. But really? Will it make the industry any more money? No. People spend what they have available already on entertainment. I have $80 in Dish Network each month -- it's like a big torrent of crap, and I end up watching Comedy Central, SciFi channel and Cartoon Network. OK, I'm a geek. The other channels are lots of copyrighted works I have no time to see. One of the top downloads on the web is shows like "Family Guy." I watch family guy, but having him on the iPod for a boring trip would be nice.
I'd say most of the traffic is porn -- and I doubt AT&T is going to defend their profit margin -- much less have to start selling modems to everyone if this is actually successful. Because without illegal downloads, and the other thing they hate; Games. They have no ***** customers. It's really great to have a web page pop up in 5 seconds instead of 20, but if I turn off all graphics -- I can do it on a modem.
So all the stuff AT&T is trying to police is convenience and entertainment -- which is pretty craptastic until Apple or someone makes them all available for a reasonable price. But these companies want to sell you the $80 monthly rate, and then expect the same on downloads ala carte from College Students -- it won't happen. Success in this venture would kill the whole need for a internet. And then their ideas of having a two tiered internet based upon bitching about a bandwidth one tenth of Japan's and dropping, won't fool anyone but the usual industry shills.
>> The best thing for everyone is if AT&T is successful. Internet usage drops, except for people getting the news they don't get on Digg. This is dumber than the music industry going after its best customers. I'm considering getting less TV and less internet bandwidth -- because these ***** are taking the fun out of everything. The writers strike has convinced me that I'm not missing much. It's pretty much related -- there are very good writers out there, but people with more money and fortune than brains who think the world turns around THEM based upon the fact that they have talented people they despise working for less. Probably the sign of the apocalypse for entertainment was Flavor Flave and his twenty ho's -- another quality MTV show not affected by the writers strike. These people have seen the dismal affect of chasing after a changing market with lawyers -- because all these suites are SO READY for fascism -- for the government to guarantee profits. So, AT&T wants to help the movie industry follow the music industry.
Could these people be any better for Steve Jobs? I'm waiting for Direct-To-iTunes shows written by the writers without the suites. They couldn't do any worse on the economics if the writers strike doesn't take off.
>> Sorry for rambling, but I think this is all connected, and it really annoys me when businesses find they don't need to compete for a service. I can understand the desire to retain revenue because you think you are losing it. But basically, content will drive a service -- the model of paying for content may be unworkable. With competing forms of entertainment -- people can move from movies to video games, or something else. Whatever is the least hassle. God forbid, you piss everybody off and they quit this crap and start reading. Then you'd never get another corporate shill in congress.
>> I hope AT&T reads this message.
Overall, this would make AT&T liable for copyrighted works that did get downloaded and they didn't stop. If they are going to be your mommy -- they have to own the baby. I expect this to eventually backfire in - ilovenicotine, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3They've got a long history, you're right. A history of being the largest, most profitable telcom in the history of the world history.
- jeffsback2223, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2Please, like he'd listen. He practically wipes his ass with $100 bills. You think he has the slightest bit of concern for anyones opinion when he controls communications.
- ilovenicotine, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Better weed my ass...and don't forget taxes on iPods. ***** socialism.
- theberlindoctor, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Damn, I just switched to AT&T from Comcast for the very reason that I didn't agree with comcast blocking bittorrent traffic. When I canceled with Comcast, I made it very clear to them that was that was the only reason I was taking my money elsewhere. Fast forward 2 weeks after I switch to the AT&T announcement.
There are no other broadband providers in my area.. (besides dish) .. so what am I supposed to do? Encrypt all my traffic? - Tinendo, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2In Canada the "Better" is even Better. THey writte it with three t´s. Just like the word "way" with 5 instead of 1 a.
- marnaq, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2AT&T dugg him down.
- Antwan718, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Well MR bush thinks that the terrorists are here in our American homes using our interwebs.
- chrisatwork, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Sure ya will. I bet you said that back when GWB got elected too.
- thestaton, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2nicely played sir.
- mt4055, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2And who are you going to use as YOUR upstream ISP? AT&T?
- schuchwun, on 01/21/2008, -9/+10Move to Canada. Better Beer, Better Weed, Better Women, WAAAAAY Better Internet.
- Thomaschaaf, on 01/21/2008, -3/+4His voice is really annoying!
- mooninite, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1AT&T has a 1/3 share into Rogers Communcations and Rogers Wireless is majority controlled by AT&T.
If you want GSM cell service in the US... you're looking at AT&T for the most part. It's a bad situation. - Heidenreich12, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Out of all the people that could have done that show... they picked... Hugh Tompson? What were they really thinking? Pick the guy that has the voice of a 10 year old boy and hope everyone likes it? Now, back on topic. I currently don't use AT&T for my internet provider, but If AT&T gets away with this, will this mean other providers will start doing this? Maybe someone will open up new option without the privacy invasion that everyone can switch to.
- Antwan718, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Go back to comcast and get Ubuntu they cant block the BitTorrent on Linux if you go to the terminal and enter some code, its somewhere on digg. Besides encrypting your traffic will only make you a bigger target for the NSA
- marnaq, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1You need to see a doctor.
- xMedic, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I could have sworn I saw Sayid Jarrah at the very end of the video...
- Itsumishi, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Joel says it best when he says "The only way to stop them from doing so is to speak up whenever we have the chance" this goes for a lot more than just the AT&T issue
- ghostaliaz, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Everyone that has AT&T cancel them & find a new ISP. Who died & made these idiots GOD. Since Bush has been in office our privacy has been going going gone & I am sick of it & not to mention Mr Clinton had the tech world jumping full of jobs & we all remember the .com boom. But then idiot Bush gets in office & destroys the tech industry & America & ever since dummy has been in office all that has been happening is the rich & his company buddies get richer & all the rest of us suffer behind this idiot. AT&T feels very bold because our Mr. Bush created this (We are the supreme beings & me and my peeps including all rich A**holes like AT&T can do what we want to & I think 911 was just and excuse for this fool to have free rain over anything he wants, like now as we can see AT&T they are so bold to just tell us that they are going to spy on us the American citizens again who died & made them god. The economy this idiot has destroyed. He has outsourced all of our jobs including all of our tech jobs to other country's, he has basically sold us up the river. But that is what happens when a dumb brain dead republican gets in office then everything just goes to shhhhh. What really kills me is these idiots actually try to justify them spying on our communications & everything else, (Duh if you are looking for a terrorist stop looking at us Americans then because we are not the terrorist, But again people I think the real reason these people like AT&T are trying to spy on us is I think they steal all of our ideas biz ideas & inventions knowledge about the stock market or a stock that you may share with a biz partner or relative. They are crooks as you can see since idiot has been in office they have probably stole so much money it would probably make Oprah jealous. I don't know if we do not vote a democrat in this next election just get ready to find where we all are going to put our cardboard box & our privacy is on the chopping block like we live in china. What kills me about Mr bush he says that he wants to free other country's & I say how are you going to free other country's when we are not free in our own country (what a joke). Just get ready to hand over your porn list & all of your biz because Big Tex idiot says so. Wow we are doomed.
- motters, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1This is something which goes far beyond technology and gadgets. It's really a question of what sort of society you want to live in. I think as the audience opinion showed people don't want to live under a quasi-communist system where the government is constantly and secretly monitoring all your communications, or acting as a nanny or censor blocking things it doesn't want you to know about (as is the case in China).
- Thing2, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2The band was creative - but for Joel to due that took some Cajones indeed. Sadly - under AT&T's rule this could simply disappear. It's really a sad state of affairs when one ofthe largest telcos can even think about such guidelines and/or policies without so much as a peep from the media and/or consolidation from its users. We simply have no control over any of this - there are no alternatives...if they wanted to do this today we would have to bend over and take it. These thoughts are all disconcerting. Sadly.....this changes nothing...
- ubitendo, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Digg is obviously a haven for las terroristas. Don't worry though, I've forwarded the information of everyone here to the NSA so we'll all be safe!
REMAIN CALM, CITIZEN! - blankoboy, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Hugh Thompson sounds like a complete idiot....what is with the way he speaks? Shudder. Major kudos to Joel for what he did!
- rowlodge, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1must have like 3 people that watch that show, never heard of it, how do you get something like that even on the air ?
- mt4055, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Trust us, we're here to help.
