- FruitFocker, on 03/30/2009, -3/+12But if I don't give out my login info who will send my family and friends virus's from my account?
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+8I don't think the comments above realize the point of the article. (I guess the title is a little to blame, but people really should read the article before they comment.)
This is about sites that ask you to enter your Google ID and password in order to import your contact list. Google has come up with a more secure way to do so. - philodygmn, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6A better solution would be one-off keys to those subsets of your data which have a predetermined expriration date, so rather than grant access in perpetuity even to only some of your data, you're granting a one-time cross-exposure, nothing more.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Somebody didn't read the article..... I wonder who that is?.....
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Somebody else didn't read the article. Does anyone read articles any more?
- FeartheKnighted, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Yeah, that's what I thought initially when I read the title. Love my G1 as it has all my google contacts, but that's not what the article is about.
- Paladin27, on 03/30/2009, -2/+5I already take my Google contacts with me on my T-Mobile G1.
- arigneysd, on 03/30/2009, -2/+5it's called google sync.. and i can use it on my blackberry storm too..
- InorganicMatter, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Hmm...this kind of worries me. Does this mean anyone can access my Google contacts after I grant authorization? The article makes no mention of granular control. If not, I guarantee you that everyone is going to turn it on when signing up for Facebook, accidentally leave it on, and we'll have millions of Google contact lists with the door wide open for anyone to enter. I've been very careful with giving out my personal/private email (and it's still pretty spam-free), so I don't like the idea of my email addy being harvested from my careless friends' contact lists.
- kiiwii, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3For some reason this made me think of a potential April Fool's Google Gag...
Google contact (lens), place in your eye and suddenly it's like you're in the matrix. I'll take 2! - 4NDr01D, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2are you wearing too?
- lexbaby, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2That may be true (contacts are open for more than just the one time authorization), but the point is today you are possibly giving Facebook et al, access to ALL of your Google related information. They say they're only looking at your contacts, but how do you really know? PoCo described here is providing a way to grant access to your contacts and ONLY your contacts.
It's basically like "friending" in Facebook or FriendFeed. Your "Friends" by default can see all of your other "Friends." Facebook apps do the same thing. As I'm thinking about this, PoCo could be a way of making your Google account, and therefore Google itself, part of its own "Social Network." - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2..... and make it read-only access.
- asubigsaxy, on 03/30/2009, -5/+7buy a G1 - do it
- geekworking, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Terrible title.
The point of the article is that some social websites are currently asking for your google login in order to grab a copy of your address book. This is how these sites are doing this right now. Using this method, the 3rd party website has full access to everything (address book, your email, etc).
Google recognizes that giving your full login to any other website is a huge security problem. The operators of the the 3rd party sites argue that doing a full login is the only way to automatically collect this information. Google's response is to provide a secure mechanism to allow users to grant access to their address book and ONLY their address book. The hope is that providing the 3rd party websites with a better way to access the contacts will prevent them from asking users for their full login. - minoss, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3Same with my iphone.
- objektiv1, on 03/30/2009, -2/+3I love how at the bottom of this site it asks you to log into Google with a pop up toolbar... LOL. Not to mention this article really had nothing to say either.
- Rajtilak, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Convergence or Cloud Computing?
- jordn, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Bacardi and cola, DO IT
- jander99, on 03/30/2009, -0/+0Its a good tool to use in order to add those contacts, without having to give full access to those websites. Not to mention, most of those websites will say they don't store your information, but how do you know?
- deltron, on 03/30/2009, -11/+4GOOGLE = THE GOVT. SPYING ON YOU
//tweak - boxxa, on 03/30/2009, -14/+3Also can be taken with you using an iPhone or ANY DEVICE THAT SYNCS WITH GOOGLE!
Just somehow using another website to get information off the original site doesn't seem useful.
EDIT: Holy crap, I think I just popped my first comment cherry.
