- replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7We are talking percentage of your income.
Gates and his wife donated $5 billion to their charity foundation. They have donated more than US$100 million to help children suffering from AIDS. On January 26, 2005, he gave another US$750 million to the international Vaccine Fund to help fight diseases such as diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, poliomyelitis and yellow fever. As of 2005, the foundation has an endowment of approximately US$28 billion.
Bill Gates will receive another $4.5 billion this year from the dividend payout from Microsoft. But Mr Gates has decided that he won't be keeping the money. Instead, he's giving it to charity.
He is worth $50 billion. He is giving 20-30 percent of his worth to others. Are you giving 20-30 percent of your worth? I bet you are giving 0. - diggfan23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have lurked around Digg for a while, and I can't imagine a more helpful site on the web these days. Kudos to everyone involved, including all the contributors.
Having said that, even after reading all the Jobs-love/Gates-hate that goes on here, I'm astounded by the comments above. I'm so stunned, that I felt compelled to open a Digg account and reply.
The Gates Foundation will wipe malaria from the face of the world. No, that probably doesn't affect you, but it does affect the millions of families around the world that can't afford to vaccinate their children. Mothers and fathers are watching their children die from a disease that we (in the States) don't have to worry about anymore. How can you possibly criticize this effort? The Gates Foundation is spending billions of dollars to find a cure for HIV and AIDS and truly believes they are on a path for success.
I have three iPods. I love them. I buy tons of music on iTunes. Steve Jobs and Apple have created a brilliant ecosystem... but why criticize the Gates Foundation for doing everything it can to save lives when politicians won't? - replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ SyDIGG
What percent do you think he should give? The man does not have to give anything but he does. What percent does Steve Jobs give? NO way it is 20-30 percent. In fact I say Steve Jobs gives nothing.
Too dismiss the money Bill Gates gives to charity illustrates how petty and pathetic some Mac users have become. Let me say that again. You are petty and pathetic. - SoonerDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I work in IT for a large library system and we just received a check from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for $90,000 to buy new computers so that people who can't afford access to a computer at home will have free access to computers and the Internet at their local library. What has Steve Jobs done to help shrink the digital divide?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Yup, give it to Gates. Just because some guy gives money to charity doesn't make him "Man of the year.""
actually .... yeah it does.
what did steve jobs do? make more expensive *****? WOO man of the year i tell ya
"***** Bill Gates Steve Jobs should have won!"
wtf for? just cuz ur a fanboy? - LordLOC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is from the Yahoo article on this subject:
Time praised the Gateses for building the world's largest charity — The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has a $29 billion endowment — and for "giving more money away faster than anyone ever has" in 2005.
The foundation has saved at least 700,000 lives in poor countries by investing in vaccination programs, has donated computers and Internet access to 11,000 libraries and has sponsored the biggest scholarship fund in history, the magazine said.
Time said Bono's campaign to make rich countries address the debt of poorer ones has had an equally impressive impact on the world.
In 2005, "Bono charmed and bullied and morally blackmailed the leaders of the world's richest countries into forgiving $40 billion in debt owed by the poorest," the magazine said.
Saving over 700,000 lives should be enough reason alone to win Person of the Year, every year. End of story. The Gates Foundation is a terrific charity, the best in the world. - zlajoie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Evil empires aside, the couple does give a ton of their money to charities each year. I would like to see how much Ellison, Jobs and Murdoch give out each year. The last I saw about Ellison was that the courts forced him to give to a charity because of some insider trading.
- dstart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't understand what's so great about 'Bono'
- michaelbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Katanna, let me quote you
"So what has Gates done this year??? NOTHING.
What has Jobs done this year? EVERYTHING.
Yup, give it to Gates. Just because some guy gives money to charity doesn't make him "Man of the year." -Matthew "
Giving to charity is a lot more useful than creating ipods, I'm sorry to tell you. ipods and mac mini's might be cool, but that's it. They are just useless gadgets to most people who wish they could afford a good education. And yes, giving to charity of your time and money DOES make you man of the year by most standards. And as cool as apple is, their computers and their gadgets are overpriced and hardly expandable, compared to PCs and several of the other media players out there.
What is such a great thing about ipods? They play music. whoa, my music player is smaller, requires 1 AAA battery, and plays records voice, radio and line in. The Mac Mini is a sub par computer in a small box. Big whoop. The powerbooks are well, pretty much the same as last year.
If you want to look at what microsoft has innovated and tried to compare that to apple, I'm thinking the xbox 360, Windows vista development, the innovations on msn, hotmail, the server updates, are all on par with Apple's innovations. What did Tiger give us? Dashboard and cool screensavers, and that new lame search? oh wow, what a contribution.
The bill and melinda gates foundation is huge, and an awesome cause. Just because you like apple, doesn't mean they are better. Most of apple is marketing anyway. And guess what, steve jobs isn't that great of a guy, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you. Read the book 'Icon.' - burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gates isnt that bad guys. he's contributed to helping many poor people in third world countries. show some respect.
- CrustyOldman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 ---
What percent did anyone here give to charity? I bet nothing."

We don't HAVE to. Were SOCIALISTS. We tell everyone ELSE what THEY should do. That's what makes us important. We know what NEEDS to be done. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wow, rich people getting on the cover of time just because they give some of their money away and get tremendous advertising out of it. Yeah, that sounds like a person of the year. The richer you are the more you should give to charity, it's a simple as that. Whether it is the nom or not, a person shouldn't become person of the year just for doing what they should be doing. The person of the year should be doing something well above and beyond just what they should be doing.
- CiceroGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i kind of liked bono when he was just a irish rock star...
- tetro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve Jobs must be fuming.
- Gambit-gyouza4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I'm just glad it wasn't the author of the Harry Potter books. - groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll never understand how people can chastise someone for donating to charity just because they make obscene amounts of money.
You may not like Microsoft, Gates' "rise to power," or even the man himself...but he's achieved a wealth and status far beyond average and the fact that he uses these things to help people in 'any' capacity is commendable. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All three of them deserve it. Although it would have been great to see Bono and Jobs together on the cover.
- nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all of you knocking the Gateses, grow up. You need to set your priorities, someone donating billions a year to charity is more important then making an iPod or two.
Gateses philanthropical side comes from his mom. She was a big philanthropist.
A majority of Gateses money is going to charity and the US government to kill some of the debt and a very small percent to his family.
You can knock Microsoft all you want but throw the guy a freakin bone. He does the right thing.

Those are some neat pictures. - slemmons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2keep on hating those charities, dude. It's bound to help whatever software company you're a fanboy of.
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what if there's an ulterior motive, it's still a lot of money and it's going to charities. It's better than spending it on advertising to people who don't need it as much.
- katar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry, but Steve Jobs, as far as I know, does not have any charity named after him. Yeah, I hate Bill Gates just like the next guy, but come on, his wife and him have done a LOT of good things with their charity. Sure, he might just be trying to save his soul. But, the work of that charity is incredible.
Bono does all kinds of great things besides being the rock star. So, I'm all for him getting it too.
I'm just glad that they put people who have done good in the world this year. - tdkyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Anyone who thinks they don't deserve it is a complete moron.
+digg"
+digg - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, interesting choice. Don't they usually pick a news maker? Was it that slow of a year?
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Everyone that said something negative about Bill Gates here is an idiot. The man gave money to charity. I larger percent of his money. What percent did anyone here give to charity? I bet nothing.
- DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does steve jobs need to win? Gates holds the largest charities in the world. If my money goes to Microsoft at least it will be used properly. Research gates and compare to other rich bastards and lets see who donates the most.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2^ norm
- zixx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to Wikipedia the person if the year is actually "The Good Samaritans" represented by Bono, Bill Gates and Melinda Gates kinda like in 2002 it was The Whistleblowers represented by Cynthia Cooper of Worldcom , Sherron Watkins of Enron and Coleen Rowley of the FBI at least that's the way i read it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person_of_the_Year - emaf37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Rumor has it that Bill and his wife have donated all their money to a charity named, "The Human Fund".
- multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bono is so annoying does he ever go to these third world countries without a tons of press taking photos every second? No, he uses the people involved to get on TV. You never see figures on what he gives, "Oh he uses his fame" bs he gets free advertising.
Angelina Jolie took a reporter with her to get the word out but didn't exploit the people. - IWood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess all those Lebanese who kicked Syria out, or maybe even those Iraqis who just voted for the third time this year, aren't as nearly as important as a trio of rich folks who didn't matter much until they actually started giving money away.
Lame. No digg, plus a boot to the head. - replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@DJMac317
You are an idiot. Did you read the story? Did you read the comments? - fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Jobs doesnt care. He's just focused on his company, which is good for everyone."

hahahaha.... you are sacrastic right? right? right? - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why Bono live in France with the elite"
wrong. he has a summer house there. he lives in Dublin. albeit in an elite area mind you.
I'm quite surprised at the choice - i would have perhaps picked Larry & Sergey at Google, considering their stock hit $500 this year. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe that al zaqwari terrorist in iraq? controversial, but certainly a news maker this year imho.
- michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's seperate Bill Gates from Microsoft for this okay? None of this is about Microsoft. We get it, Microsoft hasn't done anything special this year. But Bill & Melinda gave huge amounts of money to help people that don't even know what he does for a living. People that won't be able to afford a computer any time in the future.
- artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The last thing we need in this world is another celebrity to tell us how to run our lives.
- johnpombrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bill and Melinda Gates will be remembered for the next thousand years not because of Microsoft but because of their gift to humanity. There has never been and will never be anyone else as generous. They also have given this tremendous gift to the most poor and afflicted people on earth. Saint William?
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@SyDIGG
The petty and pathetic remark was directed at those making negative comments about his donations. I see now that you did not. I am sorry. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an idea. Let's just stop acknowledging the time "Persons/Places/Things of Whenever". The editorial staff is obviously muddle-headed and can't handle this simple task anymore.
- mulletproof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like U2 and i think my Microsoft makes great products. I'm typing this in OO on a Ubuntu Dapper desktop and i have to agree that anyone who thinks this a bad choice are completely morons.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The aids in Africa is because the christian/catholic church dogma on birth control/std prevention methods, condoms included, people there have sex without looking at consequences, thanks the previous pope on this one and you don't have to believe me just "google" it.
Poverty in Africa is the consequence of corruption or bad distribution of wealth, there is SEVERE poverty in the U.S. but everyone else looks to Africa. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I there wasn't poverty in the US we wouldn't accept cheap priced heating oil from no country. Read the papers or the net for people dying of the freezing cold, and in Africa or Brazil or anywhere else where there is poverty, they have better stuff than a middle class person, we are talking about cars (BMWs to be precise), satellite dishes dvd player and stuff, now the legit precedence of those items is arguable but that's another discussion, my point is that talks about Africa are like the talks about Eurasia and the war with them, I'm not Emmanuel Goldstein but we desperately need one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never understood the fuss about bono. I've seen articles on him for years and all I really saw was some (former?) rock star with stupid sunglasses, using his fame and money to get his words and info published. I don't think he's any different than the movie stars going to new orleans to help (in front of the cameras of course).
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bono is a false prophet, he talks about condoning Africa's' debt, but have you been to Africa, corruption, wars, genocides, slavery an drug trafficking are the day to day, all this debt condoning is giving more power to those that do wrong in Africa, think about it, why Bono live in France with the elite?.
- Canadiens1160, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow, interesting choice. Don't they usually pick a news maker? Was it that slow of a year?"

Bringing attention to world poverty and the AIDS epidemic in Africa is not newsworthy to you? - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Steve Jobs must be fuming"
haha, well, he's only spent time on his iChat, iPod, iBook, iDon'tknowWhat'sGoingOnInTheWorld!
any good action is dugg! - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0replica ...of course Gates deserves the award more than Jobs. Gates made a real postive difference with thousands of lives ...Jobs just had a good year.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@kdehead
Well he claimed different on the 60 minutes interview. Just an opinion. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bono looks menacing and gates looks ill and in the middle africa, are we missing something here?
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bonlebon - he he . he's lying. believe me, he's living in Dublin. i'm irish. i know.
