- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, do these people actually work? All of these pictures show them doing nothing, and they're probably getting paid $500,000 a year to play pool and swim. Not that I wouldn't want that. Hire me today, Google. I can't program or anything, but I can swim
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome to see it all, many many many software companies have facilities similar to this. Most software companies in japan have exercise rooms, laundry services, beds, etc... If you would rather leave work at 5 and get a real life, that's fine, the companies that have these facilities aren't looking for you. They are looking for the people that live for their work, and enjoy it, and are willing to stay late and live a little at work. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just how they choose to live their lives.
- aztekm30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man i can't believe how bitter some of you people are, your telling me you wouldn't want to work in that kind of atmosphere? Most those people do not make loads of cash, but they enjoy there job, and that's probably why Google does so well.
- sfden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was an intern last summer in Googleplex. Words and even photos can't describe it!
- smilesman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd hate to work anywhere where people can bring in their dogs. Who wants a smelly mutt running around? I consider that as bad as allowing someone to smoke at work - it bothers other people! I think Pixar's workplace atmosphere is much better....
http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=19658#1 - crazyclones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I predict... Google will bomb, crash and we will all laugh (again) at these pictures. They've obviously lost their marbles.
- slackor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a big Google fan but this looks just a little to much like the 90s dotcom arrogance with foozball tables and Aeron chairs. If we learned one thing from the dotcom bust it was to keep overhead low. All those companies with huge offices in Silicon Valley collapsed and the minimalist ones like Google stayed on track.
A woman playing on a toy trainset? WTF. If I owned Google stock that would make me sick. - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sortra looks like umbrella corp... :-p.. imagine when google creates AI.. then the Red 'Google' Queen will take over the complex
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From what I hear People in Google Dublin regularly work until 9pm on, this seems more like "live your life at work" rather than "Fun at work" I'd rather get out at 5 and live a real life!.
- Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've visited Electronic Arts Redwood City, and it also has a lot of the same things. For the little they spend on that the more productvity they've gotten from it. Google is in a lot of teh same ways the same as a number of other larger "modern" companies. Less sick time, longer work hours, more bennies.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of you obviously don't get it.
I am sitting here in my own office/control room (offshore), listening to some Prodigy (loud but not "ears bleeding" loud). I can get a drink or some food pretty much whenever I like, I am obviously taking a mini break to read/write Digg (check my mail, read the news) and yet I produce more code, do more work than any of my peers/subordinates do in a "Cubicleworld", why?
Cubicleworld is an abhorrent, dreary, political (constantly being watched and "appraised", have you not seen the original Matrix?) nightmare. Where as, working somewhere like this not only makes you not be SO bothered about staying to work, you get more done because you are happier. Trust me, my counterparts that work in the office hate going to the office, do whatever they can to not go, think they are underpaid when they do go and as a consequence do less work,,,,
Therefore, the generally SMALL (some food, candy, two little pools and "subsidised" haircuts and massages) amount that Google pay out to keep their employess happy will come back to them thousandfold. - coding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A friend of mine is supposed to invite me in to play on that pool table.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"A woman playing on a toy trainset? WTF. If I owned Google stock that would make me sick."
Duh, thats a little girl, it is in the"Children are allowed to come to work" section..My daughter LOVES trainsets... - SonicAD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@sidewalkpilot
It both means "complex", and is also a pun on googolplex. - krinkle_man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THEY GET PAYED TO WORK THERE?!
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They don't seem to know how to employ good artistic talent though...
http://www.time.com/time/photoessays/2006/inside_google/8.html
May be they just don't value visual cognition, or have a clue how to measure it.
The geeky symbol processing stuff is easy to test for, it is also the sort of cognition that machines will replace first. - idleformat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great. Just the kinda thing I wanna see when I'm halfway through an 11 hour shift + getting paid **** all. Who's doing the work there?!
Still dugg tho... - enumerated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems a lot like those large cult church / complexes in the mid-west. Why go home, everything you need is here...
Sorry, I don't buy it. - Zopmaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool!
- atox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Loved to be there
- scottatdrake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do any investors see their hard-earned money flying out the window at an amazing pace?
On the other hand... Yeah, that would be a sweet place to work. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actully they do get work done look at the idea board
- benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like fun. I want free massages at work!
Of course, I would have a hard time getting my work done. But that is a problem anyway :) - joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Seems a lot like those large cult church / complexes in the mid-west. Why go home, everything you need is here..."
Yeah, I think that's exactly the point of these facilities. To make sure employees want to stay at work. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@crazyclones
Yes, a very relaxed, very rich cult. This could be dangerous - teddziuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I interned there this past summer. It was an amazing experience. Perhaps the most memorable was the Google Dance - http://www.google.com/googledance2005/. Plenty of food and beer and of course, dancing.
- TomPetty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VERY good article if you pick up the latest TIME mag...
- idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+090's forever ^_^
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish my workplace let in dogs
For all the cat lovers, Dogs won't scale cubicals and run a muck with papers on your desk.
They also don't plauge a lot of people with horrible allergies.
Don't underestimate the power of company moral, if someone is happy working they are much more efficient, they may play for 3 or 4 hours out of the day, but do more with the rest of their time, where as most people work slowly for 8 hours taking lots of breaks to read what's new on Digg. (Like me) - whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spiderman, fair point, it is a choice, I just think it is a little like bonded labour, thats all. Spending all your time in work just isn't healthy as far as I'm concerned!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to work at Wal-Mart.
- lon3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats some weird experiment in mind control to keep people at the office so they work more
- Usobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would I love to work there?
Probably not . . . . Google is trying everything they can to keep their employees in the office. I wonder if they have their own online google dating site within the campus.
It's nice to have all of that, but my god your life is so short why waste it spending all your time at work! - PoorYorick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the same thing that companies like Microsoft, Apple, and other tech companies have done, only taken to an extreme. Three gourmet meals per day? That's a not so subtle invitation to work 5-to-9. These perks are designed so that you 1) Don't leave the campus or stray too far from your desk, 2) Feel like you're part of a club in which you have to constantly compete for continued membership, 3) Surrender salary expectations in exchange for working in a glamorous workplace. I would say these fun little perks do more for the shareholders than the employees.
Basically, this photo essay is Google corporate propaganda luring the devotion of young, highly educated workers. Who could blame them? But for employees, it's the blending of work and lifestyle. It's the blurring of identity. - PomPomMono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... you can actually never leave work!!! Oo hooo! Save money on rent.
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You've got to pick-up a copy of this month's Time to get a better look at the idea board. It is by far the best photo (and probably the best part of the article).
You've gotta love the Superman reference in the big mirror used to "reflect light on the other half of the earth so that people will always be awake using Google (and to trap Bill Gates in a floating prison)". - djpolstee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wanna work there, hehe
- Smooph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wont last.....any guesses on when we will see news articles about these comps being reduced? My guess....within 12 months.
- MrHomeValueCom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WHY NO CATS?????????????????
- gnuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is like the best "Work at Google" Ad ever....
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm... what do Google employees do, exactly?
- remcgregor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cult? Not getting work done?
Is it just me, or is Digg infested with idiots? Google does this to keep morale up, hence people work harder.
The company is doubling their revenue every single year, despite adding more ***** like this. Out of every $6 billion they bring in, close to $2 billion is profit. I'm not too worried about the company crashing and burning just yet. - denniscarter11, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0Your post is very approachable. If you are so strong believer in success in life then like to share one thing with you. There is an e-book http://www.succcess.org/ which depicts the description of the success in life. I hope you will like to go through it.
- tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would NOT want to work there!
Consider:
1. Everyone working there is convinced that they are geniuses.
2. Nothing worse than manufactured corporate enthusiasm.
3. I don't like working in toy stores.
4. It's a big souless corporate behemouth that pretends to be a fresh startup.
5. Customer of the Month: Red China
6. I especially don't like working with dogs
7. I can only imagine the stupid bureaucratic rules developers must follow there
8. Shorts and bare feet at work was passe in 1998. - Caffin8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been going on for years in certain other major organizations in this country. The US Military comes to mind. I guess the only difference is that Google won't send you off to Iraq!
- the_penguin_boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No wonder nothing ever gets out of beta there!
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want that lifeguards job!!!!
- marcoiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I want to work at google! really.. what does one have to do to get hired there. Who do you need to know?
