- sloncek, on 10/11/2007, -11/+93They would do anything to shut do site down... Some ppl in the swedish government need to step down.
- BaoUnit, on 10/11/2007, -5/+82Yargh! The Pirate Bay will always float the high seas. Load ye cannons as we 'bout ta be boarded.
- moxley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48I think this Blog from the piratebay best explains what is happening:
http://blog.brokep.com/2007/07/06/swedish-police-will-censor-the-pirate-bay/
The thing is that it is quite obvious that the police there don't have a legal leg to stand on and do are using deceptive reprehenmsible tactics to do two things - to smear the site and associate it's name with childporn, and to use a tool thatn is intended for a noble purpose (IE blocking child porn) for a way to cause iossues for the pirate bay because tyhe police are unable to find them breaking any laws.
This is almost analogous to a cop planting evidence. Pedaphiles and child porn people stick to darknets usually (as is mentioned in the blog post linked above) - these people aren't going to post links to their disgusting and illegal material to a public torrent site. I don't think that there ever was anything there. The police won't even tell them what supposed child porn is there. As a matter of fact, if there ever was anything actually put up there, I wouldn't be surprised if someone who wants to cause problems for the site was working with police to set them up.
I tend to think of Sweden and most of that part of the world as having less corruption among political/law enforcement than most other countries, but you have to wonder, when you have major multinational entertainment conglomerates who are worth combined billions of dollars who want to shut down a site like ThePirateBay, it only figures that with that much money and power they will eventually find a way to get to someoe to cause tpb problems.
This is sad, but not as sad as what's on the horizon in the US. - Havs, on 10/11/2007, -7/+52I think this might have to do with the new image hosting site they started a month or so (could be longer) ago; bayimg.com. Digg had a story about it, and diggers were reporting child pornography on it.
http://digg.com/tech_news/The_Pirate_Bay_Launches_Uncensored_Image_Hosting - savingaurora, on 10/11/2007, -3/+43they have no one else to fight so they have to target someone
- atari77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33I think you might be thinking of Switzerland.
- kent1146, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Didn't the Swedish police try this before? Didn't they end up getting sued, for illegal seizure?
- GhostCow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27That reminds me... Whatever happened to all that money they were going to use to buy an island?
- apachedisco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25That's THUNDERDOME, bitches.
- enchantedsky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25They should get Abba to fight them
- jksk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24"There is a growing discontent in the underclass in Sweden due to immigration which is making low-paying jobs scarce"
I'm sorry, what? The unemployment rate has been decreasing rather steadily for awhile now, and the only people who blame immigrants för unemployment in the first place are Sverigedemokraterna (a nationalist party, and they don't have any seats in the national parliament).
"There are huge tax issues"
Sure, taxes are high - but they've been cut since the last election, and there are plans to cut them further. Furthermore, not many people complain regularly about taxes - we're used to them.
"EU-resistance issues"
The support for EU membership has never been higher than it is now.
"there's an increase in violence"
Can you cite your sources please? This sounds like your average, run-of-the-mill reactionary ***** to me. - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26It says on that site that all images ok as long as they are legal. So no it doesn't host child porn.
- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Why are some people so damn ignorant about different countries in the world? Being a neutral country doesn't mean you don't have any laws...
- dolphumous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21If I'm ever going to get arrested for anything, could you guys put something up on digg?
The advanced warning would be kind of nice. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Or rather, the MPAA can't fight this themselves or with their bought Swedish politicians, so they have lent on the Swedish Police to shut TPB down "For the sake of the children"!
Bastards! - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I don't think they can shut it down... I remember hearing something that after the last raid, they moved the servers to different hosts around the world... so it couldn't be shut down, because a backup would just take it's place. =/ maybe i'm wrong.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18......and even Switzerland has laws. probably lots of them.
- AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -9/+26First of all, they're not making money off of "stolen *****". Copyright infringement is not theft. It's not *right*, but it's not stealing, and suggesting otherwise is disingenuous. Second, they're not doing anything wrong. They don't host any copyrighted content. Is it illegal to say "You looking for crack cocaine? Well, I don't sell it, but there's this guy down on 3rd and Oak who does."?
I won't pretend to suggest that the majority of people visiting the Pirate Bay are doing anything other than using it to find copyrighted material, but the Pirate Bay should be no more responsible than Google is for indexing sites with copyrighted content. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15They don't 'host wares'. They don't host any illegal files at all. The files are all on privately owned computers. Learn something about the subject before you spout off on it.
- 80hd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Their defense was well written and damn it's a good one.
It's so true though, if the people that are supposed to protect you begin making double standards to protect financial interests of others, it dulls their credibility. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+14I disagree, but they do still have their day job
- Vanderdecken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15You don't have to pay to get the information - you don't have to click on the ads on TPB, and it's very easy to block and remove the ads altogether. It's more like saying "You looking for crack? Well, I don't sell it, but there's this guy down on 3rd and Oak who does. Oh, and if you can, please take a look at these leaflets. *hands a bunch of advertising flyers*"
- jjb123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16And people keep saying the US is a police state, but somehow, the police in Sweden can control internet access.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Seriously dude, you need to lay off the stuff for a while...
- Intervene, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13They say "You can click but you can't hide"
We say "You can kill one, but you can't kill us all" - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12It is also a state.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Yes it is, but simply providing links to copyrighted material isn't -- you need to be actively hosting or downloading the content yourself to be liable, which is why TPB isn't illegal.
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Any user submit site can host child porn. Someone probably uploaded some so they got into trouble but it's not like it's their fault.
- adambair, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9After years of harassment by lawyers from other countries regarding laws that don't apply in your locale, you'd be pretty arrogant an cynical too.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Swedish Police About to Shut Down The Pirate Bay
Like we haven't heard that before.... - pajee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7how can you say that, the pirate bay fights for the torrent community.
- markdr123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Sweden is a country...
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Of course, we know this method won't work on piratebay. After all these turblant takedowns I don't think anyone can't force Piratebay to shutdown anymore lol.
- LogicBomB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Anyone who needs most of the software on torrent sites NEEDS to buy it for their jobs / home businesses. Casual users would never pay for it if the only method of obtaining it was to buy it.
You think Photoshop got so popular because of the legit people who use it? It's a household name because so many people have a copied version and talk about it. Same with 3D Studio Max to name another. - adambair, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'd like to echo Wartyboskfapped, TPB doesn't host 'wares'... They run a tracker that uses torrent files - text files which contain absolutely no copyrighted material. The people who are breaking the law are those who use TPB to distribute copyrighted material.
- Netrilix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security" - Benjamin Franklin
- Dorepoll, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Here's hoping the Hydra Effect will kick in soon.
- terminalpariah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, in the US they have the far superior system of simply appealing the ruling until they get a judge who doesn't understand BitTorrent, or The Pirate Bay simply runs out of money for defense.
- Piggycow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Well about that island...
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You have to digg the comment down to see the block button
- adambair, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Not digging you down :) -- It's not that I support piracy, it's that I don't support shutting down a service just because someone can figure out how to do something illegal with it.
Queue tired car analogy: it's like shutting down the roads because people speed and transport illegal substances in their vehicles. It doesn't make sense. - pajee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6so you would rather the torrent community be seen as a bunch of pushovers then.
- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6except they dont
- UnstableMind, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I love this, check out TPB's response to a Dreamworks Take Down Letter:
As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States
of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe.
Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here.
For your information, no Swedish law is being violated.
Please be assured that any further contact with us, regardless of medium,
will result in
a) a suit being filed for harassment
b) a formal complaint lodged with the bar of your legal counsel, for
sending frivolous legal threats.
It is the opinion of us and our lawyers that you are ....... morons, and
that you should please go sodomize yourself with retractable batons.
Please also note that your e-mail and letter will be published in full on
http://www.thepiratebay.org.
Go ***** yourself.
Polite as usual,
anakata
http://static.thepiratebay.org/dreamworks_response.txt - stormgren, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6U$A. Clever. You come up with that yourself?
- SoxFanNH, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6And I am sure the US could do that in the drop of a hat, just look what AT&T was supposedly doing for the government.
- lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5We had a regime change, did only get the same with other people in charge. Total revolution of liberty is what needed. Not violent just revolution of minds.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dont worry mate, Last time I heard it has more than two failovers, so it won't take morethan 15 mins for bay to backup.
- J6stik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4As much as I wanna digg you down for that, I still laughed.
- silverfires, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Where's my block button gone?!
