- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+64I very rarely call ANYONE on my cell phone. I hate them. I hate people bothering me. I hate people, period. I generally don't tell people my cell phone number or even that I have one, and only use it when it's absolutely necessary.

Perhaps this would explain why people aren't very nice to you? - themarq, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34I only call phonesex lines, and only when riding the bus, at rush hour.
- illegalchuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Does Kristin know you are calling Samantha behind her back?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+23And do Kristen and Samantha know you're calling Clemens behind their back?
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I don't know about being "popular" but I really am not a fan of my phone. What really made this story awkward for me was that it showed up on digg while I was searching for a new cell phone plan. What makes searching for a new plan kind of disturbing is that the "average" plan now is about $10 higher than the one I got over two years ago.
Is there *any* provider that, rather than offering gimmicks will just say, "Here's the base price per month just to have service: $20. Here's our price per minute: $.10 or $.15 or whatever?" I'd really just like to get charged for what I use rather than paying $40/month for some ridiculous amount of minutes that I'll never use and all sorts of rules and stipulations about what times are the best to call or not.
I mean, even LANDLINE phones still offer a basic plan for having a phone that is under $20/month. How hard could it possibly be? I'm tired of paying $50/month for something I rarely use but have to have.
Anyone have a better idea? I've heard using prepaid phone cards and a pager is still probably the cheapest way to go. - emrikol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Why not go prepaid?
Isn't that more or less what you're describing? - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I think this kind of survey is somewhat misleading. I bet you'd find that if you surveyed for *any* personal phone - cell or landline - that people only call an average of four people on *any* personal phone.
EDIT: This was not meant to be a reply to anyone. Oh well. - simulacrum256, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Old news.

yeah...i'm noticing a pattern.... - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I have AllTel...and have 4 numbers on my phone...
Verizon Dork
Cingular Orange Guy
Trenchcoat Bloke
and My most frequently used number.... Catherine Zeta Jones. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You guys are so cool posting your call lists.
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The problem with prepaid plans is that they don't offer data service. I find myself using my phone more for data access than phone calls lately (especially since I can tether it to my laptop).
When will a carrier offer data plans with -unlimited- data for less than $45/month ON TOP of your normal bill?! Cingular's unlimited data service costs more than my "unlimited" 4-6 Mb data service at my house. - Brickster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No need to tell me, I know the guy at the head office at the NSA. If I cared I'd check, thanks.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Who are these people that are bringing the average DOWN to 4? Why do they have cellphones?"
Just because we only talk to 1 or 2 people on our cellphones doesn't mean we don't use them. You'll understand when you get married. - w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm not sure what country you're in but it wouldn't be much of a cost difference with a plan + free mobile to mobile or just 2 phones on the same account in the US. Dollar a day x 30 = 30.00
- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6With regard to text messaging, its interesting how the tables have turned. When I signed up with Verizon several years ago, it was way cheaper for me to send text messages than to use minutes for trival stuff like 'Hey call me' or 'Hey I'll be in at 6:15'. Within the last year or so, they've upped the cost of text messaging to the point where you either stop using it, or send so many (which I don't) that it's cheaper to get the $4.95 unlimited messaging (which I did for my daughter who uses it a lot). Meanwhile, I have more minutes per month (with a lower monthly fee), and get unlimited in-network calling (which is great because I have 5 phones on my plan and most everybody else I call is already a Verizon customer). In fact, I even upped my monthly minutes (and still pay less than I did 5 years ago) so I could drop my land line, and have yet to go over my alloted minutes.
BTW, I hate Verizon as much as the next guy, but they have the best network in my area -- I can go all over the mid-Atlantic, including train and Metro tunnels, and never lose coverage. If anybody else was even close, I'd be happy to switch (and even happier to get some non-crippled phones I don't have to hack). - agrumbine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@elephantdog
200 minutes for $45/month?!? You MUST be in another country. All the major carriers give free long distance (just counts as normal minuts) in the U.S, and the following plans...

EDIT: Spent too much time finding the links, AnteChronos beat me to the main point... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6puts new light, around here in So Cal all you see are business exec types (hard to really tell with the dress code here, but eh) chatting on their phones or earpiece. I always imagine when I see them in the car they're closing some multi million dollar deal or some *****. Interesting to know it's just their fat wife calling that they forgot to take out the trash.
- theLimit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"am tired of waiting in a dept at walmart and call them to order someone over to help me."
Pick up a Wal-Mart service phone and dial #96. That puts you on the intercom, then just say you need an associate to wherever for customer courtesy. - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This doesn't explain T-mobile's '5' plan. That plan let's you call 5 people free of charge on your phone.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Yorn
Virgin Mobile - 18 cents/min, no contract. You only have to add $20 on every 90 days. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ w0rd
it guarantees we dont go over and get gangraped by overage fees - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There's a statistic that says a good percentage of people you see talking on their cell phone are faking it. I forget where I read that, but that's amazing if true.
- redfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wasn't there recently a study that found that people nowadays have fewer friends in general? Seems that would explain it for the most part.
- Lanser84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very interesting article. Much more than the title indicates. The article is about the different ways people use different communcation tools. Some tasks for email, some for cell-phones, etc.
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do drunk dials count too? Because that number might be fourty instead of four...
- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@elephantdog
"Mobile with 200 minutes: $45/month, long distance = ass-raped."
What provider are you using to get such a terrible plan? Cingular offers 450 "anytime" minutes plus 5000 "night and weekend" minutes plus unlimited "mobile to mobile" (other Cingular customers only) for just $40 a month, and long distance is not considered any different that local calling. You may want to shop around for a better deal. - elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The reason has to do with this:
Landline: $23/month and long distance service for next to nothing.
Mobile with 200 minutes: $45/month, long distance = ass-raped. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually if I see someone I don't feel like talking to (ex) and they haven't spotted me yet I'll yank my phone off and dial my voice mail or something.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I heard that Skype plans to end that at the end of '06.
- Dosquatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I find this is true even if there's somebody at the other end. it doesn't take a lot of effort to make some sort of affirmative sound when the other end pauses for a breath.
Uh-huh.
Yup.
Really?
wash, rinse, repeat. - scrimp212, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The number of people I call on a friday or saturday night increases with the more beer I drink, but for the most part I call my parents, my wife, and mostly two of my buddies.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4exactly why i have prepaid and my gf and i both have the same service so we can call each other for free minus the dollar a day usage fee.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll bet text messaging ups the ante by a factor of three. I always resort to that with people I'm not too close with.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ Yorn Just practice yelling really loud, it works if you live in a small town.
btw I think cell/mobile phones were invented for women in their late teens and early 20's, it just wasn't known at the time that was their true purpose. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish I had one RL friend to talk to. If I had 4... well, I'd be overjoyed. Who did they survey, all the popular people?
- Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't explain why it's a good deal for T-Mobile, but it strongly indicates that it's an impressively good deal for the customer.
- frogpelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"80 percent of all exchanges are with only four people."
This is the actual quote from the article. Sheds a little more light on it. - Dosquatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2216 entries in Contacts, about half of whom I cannot remember the last time I called (and a few of whom I do not remember who they are or why I entered them)
20 numbers I call "regularly" (at least once a month)
6 numbers account for 90% of my call volume, and most of that is inbound
3 of those I could probably do without talking to nearly as much as it turns out I do - scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Yorn:
Tmobile pay as you go is pretty good. If you are willing to buy minutes in $100 blocks it costs $0.10/minute and the minutes last for a year. However, they did just implent a sucky new policy where an INCOMING SMS message costs you $0.05 (it used to be free). - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is why I am soooo happy to be an Alltel customer. With their "My Circle" feature I can set 10 numbers to act just like mobile-to-mobile #'s. So my few family/friends that aren't on Alltel, are still mobile-to-mobile for me.
If you are an Alltel customer, definitely populate your Circle! - trjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So about three days after I got my first cell phone I was out doing a little archaeolgical survey at work on a National Forest. I had walked about ten miles in from the truck, and was taking my lunch break on the top of a hill over seven miles from the nearest road. Eating an orange, enjoying the woods, the peace, the birds songs, the slight sound of a babbling brook that's at the bottom of the hill.
All of a sudden the damned cellphone rings, birds go flying everywhere, I fall off my stump I've been sitting on ("WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?!?" Never expected to hear the extremely annoying Nokia Tune - you know which one I mean - in the middle of nowhere). I hit my head on the shovel when I fell. Not too happy, and I let whoever it was on the phone know all about it. My girlfriend was on the phone. She wanted to let me know that she was about to drive home. Even though she'd told me the night before that she was coming home right after she ate lunch, she thought it would be good to let me know again, just so I wouldn't worry (I never worried before I got the phone, why would I start now?)
Decided then, that my life with a cell phone would be short. It was. I do not have one now, and I will not be getting one again. Ever.
Cellphones are leashes. 1000 mile long leashes. You can't turn 'em off because you'll get chewed out for not having it on. Better not to have one. -
