- kstein1110, on 05/24/2009, -1/+55How about FREE Wi-Fi?
...not like stupid ATL. - seltaeb4, on 05/24/2009, -2/+47Who wants a dried-out $17 airport hot dog anyway?
- dakdak900, on 05/24/2009, -2/+23I am a business and casual traveler and am astonished that there isn't better/free access to wifi in airports. The best way to work around being forced to pay and install software is to get a G1 and tether it to your laptop.
- inactive, on 05/24/2009, -1/+22power outlets please!
- NJSlacker, on 05/24/2009, -1/+19How about an on-flight outlet so I can watch my own movies?
- roseap, on 05/24/2009, -2/+18Of course... You can bring your own food. Can't really bring your own broadband.
- stutimandal, on 05/24/2009, -2/+16Airport food sucks and is way too overpriced. Seating is the common airport area. Common area for washing hand is the airport restroom. Common place to drink water is the airport water fountain. The restaurant just serves bad food. For example, I got this $9 Falafel sandwich at the SF airport. It was STALE. The hummus was bad in taste. You get three times bigger and way tastier falafel sandwich for $6 outside in the market.
One consistent exception has been the Oakland airport. They have good food at reasonable prices ($7 for a good n fresh burrito, for example).
No wonder people like the WiFi more. - Professr, on 05/24/2009, -1/+11Well, there's DNS tunneling, or you can shell out for a Verizon wireless broadband card.
- inactive, on 05/24/2009, -0/+8The closer food gets to airplanes the worse it gets.
- BoneStamp, on 05/24/2009, -0/+7DNS tunneling doesn't work on most airport wifi anymore. :(
- Aero347, on 05/24/2009, -0/+6Or Salt Lake City
- Wisgary, on 05/24/2009, -0/+6I don't give a ***** about food. I just need to make sure I can send my e-mails to Chloe asking her to OPEN UP A GODDAMN SOCKET!!!!!
- fightingforair, on 05/24/2009, -0/+5Or Ohare Chicago.
Icheon S. Korea wins on all marks for the greatest airport! Haven't visited a better airport yet. - BoneheadFarker, on 05/24/2009, -0/+5Yes...we're all going to book flights to the Isle of Man to enjoy their free wifi, and not because it's the birthplace of the Bee Gees...
- Sabin, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6When you have a 6 hour layover and nothing to do suddenly its not so crazy to pay $10 for 24 hours of access.
- AmusedToDeath, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6Just jailbreak the phone already. It's a completely safe and reversible process - and it's so easy a toddler could do it.
- chejohnson82, on 05/24/2009, -0/+5LOL don't really fly these days, but I figured the food was overpriced.
So, yeah, I value wi-fi over food as long as the wi-fi is free, for you can pack grocery store goods in your carry on bag, but wi-fi is not like that (unless you're using one of those cool but expensive satillite internet cards) - absurdist, on 05/24/2009, -1/+5Why is it that all of the large hub airports charge for wifi with crappy connectivity, while invariably the small regional airports have free wifi with good coverage? Sacramento and San Diego, among others, FTW!
- mtnboy, on 05/24/2009, -1/+5I have found that in each airport there are few spots that give you free wireless and the rest is crap. ATL << Has WiFi I have been there. But not in all areas.
The ones that work in all areas are paid ones. - ethana2, on 05/24/2009, -0/+4The next Ubuntu will have wifi repeating functionality built in, courtesy of NetworkManager.
..that crowd of people is only going to pay once. - Rudegar, on 05/24/2009, -0/+4if you're going you can bring me back one :)
- scoot87, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3The fact that food is available and accessible now lessens the perceived importance of it. When many airports are deprived of free-wifi, the value of that want increases because its something that we don't have or have a hard time obtaining.
- roseap, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3PDX FTW!
- 2of8, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3Sounds very similar to Toronto Pearson airport. Extremely limited, and extremely pricy, selection of food.
- LanceUppercut, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3Northwest has them in the front areas of the coach class n the airbus A330. Well worth the upgrade price, I think I paid $7 on a 9hr flight to hawaii to be able to run my laptop the entire time.
- Rudegar, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3well there are 3g usb modems one can bring
- themastersb, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3I usually spend money in order of importance:
1. Rent
2. Internet
3. Utilities
4. Food
5. Etc.
Sometimes I forget though that I need electricity to power my computer in order to access the Internet... - JupiterSSJ4, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2southwest always has free wifi... just sit and wait at a southwest terminal
- LanceUppercut, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2I want this on a t-shirt.
- BoneStamp, on 05/24/2009, -1/+3Just because the firmware supports it, doesn't mean AT&T (or other providers) will. *****.
- draxenato, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Well kudos to the manx people then. The Isle of Man is a destination only airport, it's not a gateway or a hub, so they've got a captive audience and it's not like people have any choice being there. So they could've charged for wifi and what can you do about it ? You can't take your business elsewhere, so kudos to the Manx airport authority they didn't have to do this.
- irvin666, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2I get my internet from my ATT Tilt to my laptop. Got to love free tethering.
I shall never be without my interwebs. - Yazilliclick, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2Exactly. Most of these people would have experienced no internet access and wanted it inthe airport. They would not have experienced no food so what it would be like not to have it doesn't really register.
- dagamer34, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2Thank God for tethering on my iPhone 3G. Paying $7 for one hour of WiFi is CRAZY. Unless you're a business traveler, the prices they want you to pay for Internet access makes me wonder if anyone is actually stupid to pay for it.
- codereview, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2Oh so true.
Free Wifi, food's good, very clean toilets and free showers (pack with towels, soap, shaver and other stuff is available for a fairly small fee).
Incheon ftw! - matude, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2A list of airports with free wifi:
http://www.wififreespot.com/airport.html - scarolan, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2I totally agree with this. I can stop at Whole Foods and pick up a healthy, delicious meal to carry on the plane. Can't bring your own wifi though. Airport and airplane food sucks and is overpriced.
- PhantomRogue, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2Pittsburgh International has free WiFi too. One of the nicer airports ive ever been in, but its a ghost town.
- boson3, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2WiFi tastes better than any airport food.
- inactive, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2They have a great motorcycle race there which you can participate in.
its called the "Manx grand prix"
Thats where Manx cats come from.
generally a cool place overall.
/useless facts about isle of mann - andycr512, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Throwing in Colorado Springs International Airport (COS) for free wifi (SSID "tsunami", for some odd reason).
- andycr512, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1How do you get it through security? Where I am, you even have to throw away water bottles.
- vishnumrao, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Dugg. I am writing this from Singapore's Changi Airport. First thing I did after getting off the plane was to walk up to the information center and ask for a username and password to connect to the free wifi. An hour later buy an overpriced lunch.
Yay for free wifi everywhere! - absurdist, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Bad Analogy.
I'm writing this from the traveler's lounge in Kuala Lumpur Int'l Airport on the free wifi, which is throughout the airport with no bad coverage spots. Singapore's Changi airport is the same. And these are two of the busiest airports in the world. Given that, why isn't WiFi available in LAX, SFO, JFK, etc... for the same price? And why in the ***** is it 8 Euros an HOUR in Frankfurt? Other than greed, that is? - mream001, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1I was recently surprised with the availability of free wifi at airports. This was the first time I traveled and I had hours to wait for my first flight, so I pulled out the laptop to watch some videos and out of curiosity looked at whether wifi was available. Found that San Antonio airport (dunno the acronym) and Philadelphia International both had free wifi available. Didn't have enough time to check out Atlanta or Chicago as they were layovers and I didnt have enough time between flights to screw with the laptop.
- cyssero, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Windows 7 will also have this.
- ethana2, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Yeah, that would suck.
- draxenato, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1You gotta move with the times buddy, just over a hundred years ago people wouldn't have killed each other for a thick black sludge that oozed out of the ground, now we fight wars over it.
Wifi is a communications medium and people have fought and died over messages and communications since the start of civilisation. - mishaneah, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Oakland is crippleband.
- dakdak900, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1You're probably right but as of now you have to install Boingo software to buy internet, that is unacceptable. If I could just log into a hot spot and pay via my web-browser to get online that'd be better at least. Or I'd be willing to buy a latte from Starbucks to get a half hour of internet (offered in stores but not in airport stores)
