- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21The article didn't mention one thing Sloncek did after. He and I co-founded SuprFile.com, a free image hosting site, which still operates. Sadly, neither of us has really been motivated to do any additional work on it recently. For my part, I ran NovaSearch, which was for a long time the unofficial, and then official SuprNova search feature, which is how I made my connection with Sloncek.
I had originally written what was intended to be a text-based free host, similar to SuprFile. The idea was to do for text, HTML, XML, and javascript what SuprFile ended up doing for images. That code was pretty much finished, but sat around gathering dust. Sloncek approached me about turning it into an image host. He contributed the original SuprNova site design, which I adapted as a new frontend for SuprFile. I was able to re-use much of the code I wrote for the text host to power the backend of the image host, and SuprFile was born.
As another note, SuprNova was actually resurrected for a while under the name of NewNova (newnova.org, defunct now). It used the SuprNova design (I'm not sure about the source) much like SuprFile did, although NewNova really was an almost exact clone (search was pretty much non-existent). I haven't checked up on it, or chatted with Sloncek recently, but when I check now I see that it has become defunct.
For my part, I primarily use eztvefnet.org and tvrss.net for my torrent activities, since my primary use of BitTorrent is television watching. When I want to download other things, I usually check btjunkie.org. They've got a ton of content, more than any other site, but the downside is that it is REALLY stale (they update stats on each torrent every few days rather than hours). I used to use mininova, and still do sometimes, but as Sloncek said, they have hardware issues and they're always dog slow. TorrentSpy was one that I used before MiniNova, but their interface is atrocious (their sorting sucks compared to sites where you can click on column headers), and they've got an insane number of ads. - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21killing the torrent sites is as futile of an act as trying to keep your lawn evenly cut with scissors
- sKiLLa182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Suprnova was great and all, but Sloncek is no saint.
Anyone remember what he tried to do after? That piece of crap eXeem?
The guy who builds his Suprnova empire on open-source software went on to create a closed-source p2p and bit torrent client that was chock full of spyware. I have no idea if it still has any today, but at the time it was a real slap in the face to the bit torrent community. He was asked in the interview of what program he uses and I notice he didn't mention eXeem. Come to think of it, eXeem wasn't mentioned at all. - Avalonis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Suprnova was the first torrent site I ever found, and at that time thought I stumbled upon a hidden treasure chest. Don't know how I found it in the first place, but figuring out how to use those torrents gave me quite the adrenaline rush. Remember, this was way before torrents were mainstream and when the most popular DL method was still IRC. It was only when he got into trouble with the law that I found out he is also from Slovenia, like me. To keep that under the radar for so long in a country as small us ours took everyone by surprise, and when he started popping up on different forum sites, to tell his side of the story about the raids, many people found it hard to believe it really was the admin of Suprnova. Good times...
Andrej, veliko sreče v prihodnje in vesele praznike. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Its amazing how many torrent sites have nova in their names because of that man.
- doublsh0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I saw this on the front page and thought, "that sounds so familiar, but I cannot place it.." then I remembered.
wow times have changed
the wikipedia for it is pretty interesting too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suprnova.org - DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11So is taking the time to COUNT THE ***** WORDS.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8And im still crying....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hehe, never knew that Sloncek wanted to become an actor.
Good to hear from him again.. nostalgic! - sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Really? Then how come torrent sites are still a dime a dozen then?
- ArcticXC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Oh wow.. now that brings me back. I don't think I've heard of suprnova since it shut down. Same thing happened to Napster really though. Gets killed, ten pop up to replace it.
Just goes to show you that no matter how many of these sites get shut down, you can never really kill them. - fearlessfrog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8a rat?
Do I win a prize? - IbnDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure what really happened after, but yes there is a lot that this interview is glossing over, exceem and the birth of snarf.
- Istari6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually jonpotz, I had the same issue of utorrent "eating up" my ram when I got a new machine. Turns out that the ***** nvidia firewall that had been installed was at the root of the problem. I ended up doing a clean re-install myself and have had no problems since.
- doublsh0t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My favourites which pull from all the biggies:
www.btjunkie.org
www.scrapetorrent.com - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You've got your facts wrong. He didn't "go on to create", he was hired by the makers of eXeem to promote it. It's not his fault that they messed up development.
eXeem was a company that wanted to try to capitalize on Suprnova's success and attract some customers. They offered to pay Sloncek to promote it. What's wrong with that? - bug20k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RIP Suprnova
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ah, the good ol' days when I'd come back from school and browse all the new torrents on Suprnova and download like crazy.
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If anyone is looking to be nostalgic themselves, the IRC server is still around. (It's changed names and owners a couple of times)
irc.p2p-network.net #p2p-net - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone out there get a chance to get ahold of the suprnova t-shirt? I have mine tucked away in my closet like a collectors item... do I ever miss suprnova!
- khafra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Interest oriented sites" = "empornium.us"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Perhaps because that project wasn't about Suprnova?
- krbrowning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I miss WDMA
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guspaz,
"eXeem was a company that wanted to try to capitalize on Suprnova's success and attract some customers. They offered to pay Sloncek to promote it. What's wrong with that?"
Just that, is what's wrong. Taking stolen *****, and then trying to make money of it through 3rd party software they had said was "adware, spyware free"....even though the truth was is was filled with *****. That is what's wrong, it's called a bold face lie and a stab in the back. Not to mention the "exploits" people ran, which led to pops up with offers to download Bittorrent's newest version which were actually viruses.
But I don't expect nearly anyone to remember that, since we live in the day and age of the 1 week memory.
I love how once a year there's these stories of "how grateful" we should be, and how these people try to rewrite ***** history like I wasn't there.
Move on. - briangig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3btjunkie always has what i need...piratebay's search is horrid.
- zackr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Suprnova was an awesome site... I spent so much time on those forums taking part in photoshop contests and downloading torrents *sigh*
It was a sad day when it went offline... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 EliteTorrents was frickin AWESOME!
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That was the best and imo is still better than the bittorrent sites available today. Piratebay is alright, but some English every once in a while would be nice. Isohunt is ok, but the javascript thing is a little annoying. Mininova and the others are pretty bland and not so many torrents available.
*cry - SkyRider119, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There is no shortage of them now. They are a life saver from time to time!
- deadzone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Rather incomplete as it makes no mention of Sloncek's involvement with the failed eXeem project.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the thing is, torrent sites are a dime a dozen now, they don't want a ubiquitous torrent hub though. having multiple torrent sites leaves them chasing too many ducks to catch them all, it was much easier to chase after a few huge sites than several dozen more intrest oriented sites.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Until I found btjunkie, suprnova was definitely my favorite bit torrent site of all time. It was a sad day when that went down and for me, it actually feels like it was much longer than two years ago. I guess a lot has happened in that time period though.
- ninepound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's so odd... I was just reading the Wiki article on Suprnova because I missed it so much. I had no idea that it was 2 years ago today! Mininova, you've got a big boot to fill.
- 2shae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But what happened to newnova.org???
- TCDToxic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sloncek is a great guy. I had an opportunity to hang with him on irc and forums. I was one of the mods for newnova.org. Seems they are no more. Sad.
- adm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember actually shedding a tear the day that it went down for good.
For me, the world of bittorrent has never been the same since. - Fearnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1long live isohunt
- MetricLobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://cheggit.net/ is better
- jackpot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Even further back before the days of Bittorrent was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharereactor
- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jus1haz2: December 19th is my birthday. Imagine how I felt.
- jaxxxk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no mention of exeem??? Come on that deserves a shout...
- farzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lucky for us there is still http://www.meganova.org
- adx85, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That Sloncek is a living legend in the undergorund lol, I'm glad I shared a forum with him :)
- grazwa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5don't forget uknova [www.uknova.com] which is still up and healty as ever.
- jonpotz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I can't see how Sloncek can say all his ram was eaten up by UTorrent...
He must be using the Slovak 486 DX/2. - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -2/+0ISOHunt seems better than I remember suprnova being, but nonetheless at the time it was a God.
- duggmania, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The best torrent site for films is without question http://www.flixflux.co.uk - if I'm looking for other stuff I use piratebay though.
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Suprnova was great at the beginning, towards the end it had way to many leechers. So for the rare torrents it was great but for the popular torrents it was always best getting them from a registered torrent site, the downloads were much faster.
EliteTorrents...now that's a site to shed a tear for. - TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Sorry it's been 2 years and 1 day now. You sort of posted late.
- JWCrease, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2who gives a rat's ass?
