They know who you are and where you live already. - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I went to my representative's website and actually wrote my own words and opinion. I would recommend you do the same if you want to be taken seriously instead of just sending some form letter from the EFF.
- undauntedspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Good point. -- Sent, also forwarded it to everyone I know.
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Don't tell anyone, but I watch legally obtained DVDs on my Linux box. I would love to see the DMCA get reversed, than I wouldn't need to go around feeling like such a criminal.
- OSUTodd23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12How about a link to the actual bill:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.1201: - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11dugg+sent+forwarded to friends and family
We NEED this ridiculous law changed, I should be able to take the DVD's I OWN and view them any way I damn well please, especially since I am on Ubuntu - gk128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is a good idea by the EFF. Everyone should send one of these in.
- scotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9while i agree a lot of diggers seem way too into piracy, this bill has nothing to do with piracy and everything to do with the ability to not have what you paid for be controlled by someone else. just realize that if CDs had been bundled with DRM since they came out, there would be no iPod today. DRM stifles innovation.
- fgiDangeresque, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Support the eff dammit!
Nice sounding I guess, but should this actually happen I can see the 'non-copyright-infringing' (or other inconspicous terms) being construed somehow to alienate large demographics (_again_, sigh) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Dugg! and filled out.... pass it on people....

http://www.findacritter.com - scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Please do this, for all the times you've struggled copying DVDs to your computer, for all the times you've struggled copying CD's to mp3's this is needed.
The media giants influence congress and congress does not really have a clue how much it is hurting the public. If you don't think it matters remember the Janet Jackson problem? Remember a few weeks after that the media reported that the FCC received a ton of complaints about it but 98% or some high number were form letters from the American Family Association? Even if you don't personalize it, send it in.....
digg+sent - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Better yet, hand write it and send it to them snail mail. Like sending resum'es, the more original the letter, the more likely they'll actually read it and you won't simply get a form response.
Sadly, I don't have that kind of time in my life, and CTS sucks for handwriting. - FamilyPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There is also safety in numbers...I forwarded it on to a bunch of people...spread the word!
- Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm not American, but American policy seems to have a knack for influencing Canadian policy - so I urge every American Digger to at least fire off a quick (but sensible) email to their representative supporting this initiative. Even if you don't think it does enough - its important to get consumer rights back into the consciousness of lawmakers in the US. Hell, its important to get personal rights back into the consciousness *cough*wiretaps*cough*, but the two are related.
If the US goes in this direction, then hopefully the Canadian government will be able to stick with their traditional view of "police your own damn copyrights ".
Remember - its not any government's job to protect the IP of any given organization - only to adjuticate on it. However it is the government's job to protect the people's fair consumer rights from predatory, near-monopoly organizations. - TheWorkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dugg and Sent mine in.. Hopefully David Wu in Oregon will actually see this. :)
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If only they would pass a bill that made incorporating DRM into products punnishable by death. I would volunteer to be the executioner.
- webdevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Never gonna happen. You may as well support this.
- Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6eff.org is blocked by my company firewall. odd...
- TheBeaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sent mine - God bless the EFF. They're doing great things.
- topher1078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Trust me, you'll still get a form response. But they still take written letters more seriously than e-mails or forms, so writting it out is the way to go. (Just don't use ripped out notebook paper. Those get thrown right out.)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If the USA ever bans DRM and TCPA I would have a wetdream immediently. I can dream though.
Sent my rep email in. - LMH1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The best forms to get attention with your representatives are;
Phone -- the best. You'll talk to someone in their office, not likely your respresentative, but you will be taken most seriously. Make sure you are clear what you would like them to do (vote for/support HR1201, and why you think it is important -- how it affects you.
email - they now look at email more seriously than snail mail. Snail mail, since the anthrax stuff, takes forever to reach them, and may not reach them at all, or in time.
FAX also a good format to be taken seriously. - hijinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5how i love the eff.. i try to donate to them at least 2x a year
- lidflipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5FYI, for everyone that has a fax machine. It is typically more effective to send a fax to a representative than an email. At least that's what the ACLU says.
- topher1078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Levels of effectiveness - handwritten letter > phone call > fax > email.
- DJMac317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Make sure you send it. This is one of the most important bills this year.
- cdgore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I seriously back up a lot of my games in case i lose/scratch the disk. Also, if I understand it correctly, this would let you download games/music that you own if you ever lose the original (I've done that plenty of times).
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just so you all know the most effective communication with your congressional reps are (in order of effectiveness)
1. Speaking to them in person (even more effective if you have a large donation in hand for his/her campaign).
2. A hand written letter
3. A printed letter
4. A phone call
5. A printed form letter prewritten by a special interest group
6. A personal email
7. A form email from a special interest web site
So if you really want to be as effective as you can AT LEAST sit down and hand write a real letter on paper to your congressman. Emails generated from web sites are pretty much ignored--cause they think you are of the technorati-videogameplayin-passive-couldn'*****-probablydoesn'tvoteanyway-generation. - fishx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dugg for my friends south of the border...
- scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i'd tell you to use tor but you'd first have to download it from
http://tor.eff.org
... bring it in on a usb stick - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'll be sending in my support, but I notice a lot of you don't seem to be reading the actual HR 1201 text (or you don't mention of it). It might be a good idea to read the actual text as carefully as possible so you don't end up supporting some long term legal gotchas.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um, I wouldn't get too uppity and excited about this guys...
Unless Congress still thinks it's 2005, and can see into the future, this bill has been pigeon-holed, i.e., forgotten and buried, in committee for over a year now:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR01201:@@@X - LMH1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also, whether by snail mail, email, FAX or whatever, best to use your own words and not a form letter.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Then again, the EFF could bulk print the messages and send them a few boxes worth of letters from constituants telling them they won't get a vote unless this bill passes into law... (or at least that's what I put in every letter I send my reps).
Hand-written letters are more convincing too, but I don't have that much time.. 20 unique letters a month does it for me.
(and your represenative's fax number is on their website. Google the name and you'll have their number). - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Done and done. I like how it sends it to the right person automatically.
- pradeep1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dugg + sent + joined EFF + called Senator's/Rep office to voice objection.
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gotta love the EFF. It only takes 30 seconds to send this in, I've told all of my friends (and fellow voters) to do the same.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I AM going to use the media I OWN the way I PLEASE regardless of any law. Filled out. Might as well be legal doing it.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Holy ***** will this get squashed in a hurry. Big media money will be flying around Congress. "Porche's for everybody!!!" yeah!!
- whistle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Please keep this dugg on the front page for a while.. like a couple of days !!
- dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sent -- and I also sent emails on all the other issues that the EFF is tracking. Good times. :)
- kacymartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its identical to the setup that the ACLU uses also. not sure who came up with it. but its a great idea.
- OSUTodd23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The part I really like about the bill is this addition:
"Except in instances of direct infringement, it shall not be a violation of the Copyright Act to manufacture or distribute a hardware or software product capable of substantial noninfringing uses.'."
Unfortunately, they don't define substantial. - moonshn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you really should know that. Our form of government is dependant on an informed citizenry
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This bill is still in the House. I respect your enthusiasm and totally agree that a phone call is in line but save the call to the Senator until the bill moves to the Senate.
- hendoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haven't read all the comments but you can track this bill here. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-1201
- weirdone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SENT!
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4At some point, congress has to start listening to its constituency. They have to start realizing that if they aren't doing what we tell them too, we're going to call them out on it, and they're going to lose the power they've worked so very hard to get. This stuff matters. Never think it doesn't.
- thatoldsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FOR GREAT JUSTICE (lol catchphrase)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the response I got:
Thank you for passing along your views on the issue of digital rights management and copyright law. I appreciate knowing your views.
The critical balance in digital copyright laws is to protect the interests of the creator of the work or the technology when it is used or broadcast, and still promote the free flow and lawful use of creative works. Making this issue even more difficult is that traditional legal concepts must be adapted to address new technologies. The proliferation of digital media and access to music and movies on the Internet has made this abundantly clear.
Several bills have been introduced that are designed to address certain aspects of this problem. As Congress continues to debate this issue and craft legislation, you can be sure I will keep your views in mind.
Thank you again for contacting me. With best wishes, I am
Sincerely,
Vernon J. Ehlers
