- betterth, on 11/12/2007, -5/+111Sucks to be Microsoft? ***** that, I'd like to be Microsoft right now. Just for an hour. The money would be nice.... oh the money.
- chris9902, on 11/12/2007, -15/+80It looks like Fisher Price should be more worried.
- ha1f, on 11/07/2007, -21/+73Microsoft doesn't lose anywhere. These machines can have Windows installed AND Asus is working to release a unit that has Windows preloaded.
- Eldoo77, on 11/07/2007, -4/+45Hmmm... someone invents a truly revolutionary hardware device and chooses to put Linux at the heart of it and all we can do is drone on about MS. Sad, really. Cheer up, Linux is gaining traction!
- Ub3rg33k, on 11/07/2007, -2/+36Such a cool little machine, but the price needs to drop about $100 and they need to bump that storage up to 8 GB as originally promised. When that happens, I'll buy one.
- bretrex, on 11/07/2007, -1/+33You can buy a budget PC for around the same price with much better specs. The lure of the eee is small size, light weight, long battery life and ease of use. Many people don't need a large hard drive or a fast processor... they need to check their mail, write a paper and use the internet, something that the eee was made for
- seanhive, on 11/07/2007, -8/+33Damn Asus put out a Linux PC? I respect that kinda balls.
- ha1f, on 11/07/2007, -5/+29Wow. Another ridiculously stupid comment. Xandros provides a _supported_ and _customized_ OS and user interface. Thats what Asus wants. And to boot, its on Linux. This is some of the best publicity Linux has ever gotten, and yet you won't accept it because Microsoft gets a cut. Who the hell cares? Linux isn't supposed to make money anyway. Have fun killing Linux, moron.
Also, it's November: 'early this year' was a while ago. - banmaster, on 11/07/2007, -5/+25By Fisher Price you mean Apple right??
- MacEnvy, on 11/07/2007, -2/+21I don't know, I could see myself using this as a "carry-around". Instead of carrying my MacBook, I could just bring along this little 2 lb dealie to get online, e-mail, note-taking, etc. Also I'd probably use it on the couch during the evening browsing around due to the low power consumption and easy portability (for when I go out to have a smoke). Or alternatively, I could give it to my wife to use at night and I'll keep using the MacBook. It's a solid, cheap Internet device that would be great for kids or as a second machine.
All in all, there's definitely a market for this. Especially at just a couple hundred bucks. - JasonCox, on 11/07/2007, -3/+21Yeah, it must suck to be Microsoft considering the Eee PC still has a Windows key on it. I wonder why...
- xerus, on 11/07/2007, -3/+17Yes, Microsoft hates taking their daily money bath... sucks to be them.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -4/+17Here's one with Vista installed.

At the end he shows the HD space left, it's a lil bit over half. - 5urr3al5am, on 11/07/2007, -1/+14yeah that's kind of dumb title... love or hate MS ... they have like a million billion dollars in the bank
- carly34, on 11/07/2007, -7/+19But you see it goes way beyond that, and I agree with you BTW. You not only have to run Linux but you have to follow everything the Linux radical fanbois, like Roy Schestowitz, proclaim as the truth.
IOW everything has to be given away for free.
There is no such thing as intellectual property.
Propriatary technology (Nvidia, ATI etc) must be shared with everyone etc....
It's total lunacy when you look at it from that POV and THIS, and people like Roy are actually hurting Linux because they are acting like raving lunatics rather than letting Linux grow in baby steps so to speak.
IOW they want it all and it's their way or the highway.
Fortunately for the rest of the earth these radicals are few and far between compared to REAL Linux advocates who actually help the cause with truths instead of lies. - Stonekeeper, on 11/08/2007, -5/+16Meh, he's just annoyed that microsoft does actually make money off this. Call it stealth tax if you like, but the fact is, they *DO* get money off this.
- yarukizero, on 11/07/2007, -1/+12No, no one said anything even remotely like that.
- dezman2003, on 11/07/2007, -1/+11wow you're a ***** nut case
- ElectroBot, on 11/07/2007, -1/+10You broke the chain.
You were supposed to say that it need 100GBit Wifi. - Dobby156, on 11/07/2007, -8/+17how the ***** does it suck to be M$, they have the Biggest OS (arguably best) and tons of cash just there a PC with out its OS doesnt really count as sucking
- zip22, on 11/07/2007, -1/+9link to that $200 - $300 Eee PC. right now, the only model available seems to be $399. There have been a few laptop deals recently that dip to around that price range and the vostro line starts at $449 with a 15.4" screen, 512MB, 60GB HD, Sempron 3500+, cd burner/dvd combo drive, and vista
- gothsquirrel, on 11/07/2007, -3/+11I See that you could potentially install windows on this but not when the solid state drive only holds 4 gb
- Roger, on 11/07/2007, -1/+9The huge border around the LCD makes it look like a toy. They need to make the display larger.
- Ellipsys, on 11/07/2007, -3/+10This is a fantastic little machine. People need to keep in mind that the average Sony SZ, Asus U1 or other small notebook is close to $2000. I can't wait for an upgrade that includes a Core 2 processor and a slightly higher resolution screen. I'd take 1024x768, or a widescreen variant thereof
- getatmedigg, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7ASUS makes good PCs. Kudos.
- JOEINDIAK, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7Yeah, and increase the screen size to 10" !
- Andytom, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7I'm a student and think this would be great to take with me to lectures or when traveling home. Small, light, can do basic world processing what more do i need.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -3/+10Real player Clips? Which decade are you living in?
- lodleader, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6http://eeepc.asus.com/en/news10192007.htm
yeah... lost for MS - 10goto10, on 11/07/2007, -6/+12Link to that $200 - $300 laptop with MUCH better specs or I'm calling *****.
- fatdog789, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6Vista comes in 7 different flavors, not including the flavors you can put together yourself. Vista uses image-based installation, so you can make an ultra-minimalist install.
- bigsteve, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Might want to google "Tiny XP" if you've never heard of it, really neat stripped-down XP that could definitely fit in 4gb.
- dawhitie, on 11/07/2007, -2/+7Oh yes, sucks to be multi-billion dollar Microsoft, sales went down a whole... oh wait sales are still climbing
- intellimouse, on 11/09/2007, -2/+7It's fair because that "one time" actually happens "all the time" if you know where to look.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6Why would you *want* a 14" screen, a built-in optical drive, and a copy of Windows? My 12" IBM X22, while still being bigger then I want, is nice and light to carry around, allows me to watch movies and surf the web when I'm on day trips, lasts nears 4 hours on a standard charge, and works beautifully under Ubuntu. If the Eee PC has at least 1 USB, it looks like this will be the perfect upgrade for me...
- airiox, on 11/07/2007, -2/+7CompUSA and Walmart both had laptops in the $300 range with vista, the latest celeron chipset, more ram, more video card, larger LCD screen, larger HD, and the list goes on and on and on.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?p ...
Link to the compusa computer which isn't as good as the Walmart version, but is decent nonetheless. It was priced at $299 during Walmart's Friday sale last week. - NSMike, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5At a "couple" hundred bucks, meaning $200, I'd probably buy two. At $400, it just doesn't hold up, IMHO.
- exomni, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5meh. Every month the Eee PC goes up a few hundred dollars in price. ***** them.
- stupidpoo, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4Ooops, no one seemed to click through the link.
Asus says that this will ship with Windows by the end of the year - inf0, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4you can hook up an external vis usb, hd/dvd drive/whatever.. hell you can install a different flavour of linux off a thumbdrive..
- Ub3rg33k, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4Newegg is shipping them now.
- orxor, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4And the great thing about the $449 laptop is that the weight and bulk are thrown in for free.
- andycr512, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4I think we need to stop competing so much. Sure, I like the MS bash session as much as the next Linux user, but I use Linux because it fits my needs first and foremost, not because Bill Gates is evil and slaughters goats in secret. If you like Windows, great, use it. If not, there are alternatives.
- ChazPSE, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4I love the idea....a small light beater for anywhere and wk-end trips, I'll wait for the 8GB version later this month though.
- dezman2003, on 11/07/2007, -2/+6it runs windows too.
- cquinnd, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4I don't mind looking both ways before I cross the street.
I don't mind learning to keep a safe distance between my car and the cars on the road ahead of it.
I don't mind having to keep a few safe practices in mind when using a computer. That applies to every OS I might install. - hellyes, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4And it needs a super-multi optical drive.
- xevidentx, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4seriously, people need to stop putting their dumb opinions in the headlines.
- brundlefly76, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5"Windows and optical drives are gone in a flash."
The popularity of this device has absolutely nothing to do with its lack of optical drive or Windows - its the novelty of its weight:form factor.
I think its really cool, but as some other reviewers have noted, it is really unclear who the market for this device is.
The budget-minded?
Well, for $1 *less*, you can get a Walmart 15'4" Everex Stepnote that will blow the specs off of this toy except that it weighs 6 lb, if I were budget minded I would certainly take the weight vs the extremely limited specs of the eee pc.
The Mobile Professional?
I dont know of any mobile professional who cannot justify more money for a more usable notebook - like many reviewers have said the keyboard is not for heavy use - this would make my life hell. - klisejo, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5Congrats. You found something 3x as heavy, twice as big, and more expensive. GG.
