- astorygirl, on 06/09/2009, -1/+22Looks like by following in Digg's footsteps, StumbleUpon gets to learn from Digg's mistakes.
- Tanktunker, on 06/10/2009, -0/+19StumbleUpon is a ***** time hole.
It is a hole into which time disappears. - inactive, on 06/10/2009, -3/+21Wow I forgot all about the diggbar. I hated that PoS.
- shankarganesh, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14from when did URL shortening become a business!
- benologist, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12Digg's problem, and the one SU is about to run into, is they want to position themselves between everyone and everything to boost page and ad impressions because that shows growth and increases their value - or at least creates the perception of it on paper which is good enough.
Url shortening is a transparent service - your job is to simply check your database and redirect to the appropriate url. Anything else just makes you an annoying middleman desperately clawing for numbers to show investors. - inactive, on 06/10/2009, -1/+12beware of shorting urls. they can be a gateway to a phish, or a gateway to a trojan.
- Tarkaan, on 06/10/2009, -1/+11Or worse...Rick Astley.
- milkmit, on 06/10/2009, -2/+11URL shortening is the worst thing, ever. I refuse to click on mystery-meat links, just on principle.
- DrakeGTA, on 06/10/2009, -1/+8Yes, but so is digg.
- nbx909, on 06/10/2009, -0/+7when they start overlaying ads.
- shark72, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6In case you're thinking of registering wo.pr to run your WarGames fansite, keep in mind that the .pr TLD registration fee is $1,200 per year.
- acephreak, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6.PuertoRico?
- 64bitllama, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4dugg for "copy pasta"
- Hellahulla, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4Is there worse?
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4I can provide you with one scenario where short URLs make sense.
I am reading ATOMIC mag, and the "From Atomic Online" section mentions a forum topic post on "why I like Linux" as a special mention.
The magazine has the URL in it's full form, and you have to type the whole damn URL in just to read the post.
Which of the following URLs would you like to type in?
1. Atomic's URL in full :
http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic ...
- or -
2. shortened URL :
http://bit.ly/forumLinux
I can't believe that a PC modding magazine would NOT KNOW how useful shortened URLs are for this very reason... - freefalll, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3It's so much worse than Digg, you just keep click that damn button over and over again.
"Stumble!"
"Stumble!"
I always wonder, do you think geniuses such as Mozart, Shakespeare and Einstein would have gotten anything done if Stumble Upon had been around during their days? - vtbarrera, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3When there was a need to make URLs more "Twitter Friendly".
- drivingalone, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Well isn't that just SU.PR!
- Stingwolf, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Mega million?
- DavisCollins, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Why doesn't Digg have a hyperlink limit? This is ***** ridiculous. (Pretty convincing trojans, by the way. Good thing I'm on a Mac!)
- 4rp4n3t, on 06/10/2009, -1/+4Gotta disagree. In some circumstances it's useful, such as when I need to email a client (or friend for that matter) a ridiculously long URL that I *know* their mail client it going to bork, meaning they have to copy pasta into notepad or just think I sent them a broken link...
- TheMachine1, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3I agree I want to read a descriptive url before I click on it.
- winmywii, on 06/10/2009, -1/+3Every time I click on one of these it ends up being the swinging dick video (or something along those lines).
- tenmilesky, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Soon, I'm sure.
- commentbot, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Can we call it a "business"? Hum...
- shark72, on 06/10/2009, -1/+3When bit.ly got funded for $2MM.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2every time SU updates their interface, I like it less. Can I just stumble and have a simple photoblog?
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Reported.
http://digg.com/contact - LightSpeed4, on 06/10/2009, -1/+2great now we can fear a phisher even more
i hate shortened URLs and will never click one of those links. - MrGeorgeBrown, on 08/13/2009, -0/+1Very Nice, but I would like you to share more in the area of why this is a good thing.
- winmywii, on 06/10/2009, -1/+2or worse..
- shark72, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1"MM" is a somewhat uncommon way of writing "a million." "M" is Roman for "a thousand," so "$2M" is ambiguous -- some people read it as "two thousand" and others as "two million." People writing casual prose on the web usually use "M" for million, but the accounting and finance types use "MM." A million is, of course, a thousand thousand.
- xino, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1With tinyurl.com addresses, you just change it so it's like preview.tinyurl.com/whatever and it will tell you the long address. I think you can also set a cookie there so it automatically does it every time you click a tinyurl.com address. Then with is.gd, you just put a dash at the end of the shortened address so with http://is.gd/1 you put http://is.gd/1- Not every URL shortening service has this, but these 2 do.
- xino, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1You might want to shorten it in case you want to write it down.
- judicar, on 06/10/2009, -2/+3Business?
- commentbot, on 06/10/2009, -2/+2You've gotta be the first person I see who likes long URLs!
- captaintrips121, on 06/10/2009, -0/+0Other than posting links on social sites( which imho is not a need) what purpose does it serve to shorten a url? I simply see no reason for this in my life.... Of course, I do not like twitter, or facebook, so maybe I simply dont "get it."

- himanshuchanda, on 06/10/2009, -1/+0I believe they need to have some USP plugged into this.... URL Shortening is an old story now. Until something unique is pumped up there, this wont survive
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -2/+1Anyone got an invite?
- MyTakes, on 06/10/2009, -3/+1i cant even register a 4 letter domain name, but they get a 2 letter one?
