Ironic much? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7899% of people on facebook put their whole name, except of course the 99% of black people who make their names 'Rondell immabootsyboy Harris' or 'Ontraneice ghettobooty Nevels'
- TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36This just in: Turn off caps.
- TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I think a Mr. Dashiell F. is going to be receiving a whole lotta porn spam. Oh yes.
- kcchan1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What's the point of not putting your full name? How on Earth can any "predator" tell if John Smith isn't really Joe Bloggs?
- sfida, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I'm totally going to sign for packages using those names from now on.
- TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I think humans have wholly overcome natural selection, so your argument means *****. Unless of course you can go one on one with a bear, naked.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's not idioc it's true. Just look at Kevin Durants...
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And 100% of underage teens who drink post pictures of them drinking on their MySpace/Facebook profiles.
- str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5people with non-popular names are more easily identifiable
- RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I sort of agree. I guess nowadays you can get pedophile'd by someone just knowing your name.
- dygitaljoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice catch. Here's his myspace: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=86068671
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3My mum was telling me a story about her friend's daughter who had a myspace account. It was private and the mum wanted to see what was in it, so she just guessed the password (it was her daughters first name I think). She could not believe the pics her seemingly innocent 15 year old had uploaded there. And That's what you get for having a myspace (and not choosing a smarter password).
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm more worried about spammer and government busy bodies.
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My girlfriend works for a respectable architectural firm who were recently looking to hire a new receptionist. She advertised the position in the paper and received around 30 job applications, mostly from teenage girls.
After receiving each application, she would search their name on Myspace before considering them for an interview. About half of the applicants so far have had public Myspace profiles.
Of those that did have profiles most of them revealed a lot of personal information about themselves, mostly undesirable. Several had photos of themselves in their underwear or drinking & taking drugs, some had blog entries about how they hated their jobs and their management. Needless to say, they weren't called in for an interview. - chrisxkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2all profiles on facebook are private unless you have already approved the person
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@EXreactor
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm scaling the ranks of getting my name out there, so I appreciate having my name gain exposure. Of course, I don't consider myself at risk of being a rape victim, and I live in a safe neighborhood so I'm not concerned in the first place. - Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They can search your name and find your phone number and where you live, even a picture of your house on sophisticated search engines. For example: http://www.switchboard.com/
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Teens" not protecting their information?
Maybe it should be written as "Computer noobs don't know wtf they are doing and release their private information without thinking".
As for myself, I have decided that it is better for me to release my personal information, such as my name, address, etc. Though I don't think I have ever given out my phone number (I don't want any bitches calling me! Though I guess I just ignore everyone who calls unless I know their number anyways...). But it comes with my position, I am an Open Source PHP developer ATM, and the more people that know about me the better, as I am looking for jobs! :D
But I know you can find my real name, address, probably phone number, email addy for sure, IM addresses, and all kinds of other stuff by simply searching google for my username (and there might even be a pick of me too! ...wait, just checked, my pic is no longer shown in google images). - MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm glad Facebook uses first and last name, and that most people don't mess with it. It makes it easier to find someone or to know who they are if they try to add you.
On Myspace, people change their name to PLUMP_LIPS or ~*SnIFfLes*~ and it's impossible to find them.... not like you'd want to.
Facebook is just so much classier. The fact that you can't view someone's profile unless they approve you is nice too. - xmuzik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i doubt their protecting their profiles, their probably just becoming more clickish & becoming one with the hive mentality of their own little circles
- AZNL473ncy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like to say NO they don't. Which group of people did they survey anyways? If it was a techie group, then their results were biased and only included a small section of teens, most teens (which I know) have full info available, you could probably steal their identity if you did some research.
- SWiG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is why they are private, so their parents can't see them. They don't think about predators when making it private, they just want to be able to comment without the authority figures in their lives figuring out what is going on.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw is it true that Dr House has a MySpace account?
- MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How many teens drink and use drugs but DON'T put pictures of it online? I guess you have to assume that ALL teenagers are hoodlums.
I can see what you are saying... but what did employers do before Myspace? Hire someone and just hope that they aren't a skank at home? Drug screenings, criminal background checks, and other things screen potential employees. As long as they don't post pictures or blogs of their 'personal' life, they still have a chance of getting hired. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1She's 15, so having sex, drinking, posing semi nude, things like that are probably not the best idea. Drinking age here is 18, age of consent is 16, and of course it's CP unless you're over 18. And uhm, I'm Australian, no American..
- meez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What non-innocent things was she doing? Drinking? Having sex?
You Americans are awfully protective. - wolferz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3humans have transcended natural selection, for better or worse, and it has no direct connection with laws. As theakolyte pointed out, it has to do with technology. Tools make man all but immune to natural selection.
People who natural selection would kill before puberty live long easy lives because they have sanitized water and a house with climate control and super markets and so forth. Mean while people whom natural selection would normally "pull it's hair out" trying to kill die cause of pollution and stray gunfire.
Natural selection lost it's grip on humanity a LONG time ago. Tools are the reason why.
You could include tools in natural selection, but then natural selection ends up being as much about the political and economical environment one lives in as it is about the genes passed down to him, thereby defeating the whole purpose. - yacks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"no computers, no forms, we weren't even here. Don't feed the Beast!!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I try to avoid revealing my name, my ip address, and my address on everything.
Gotta watch out for that FBI. - connizzle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2i think it's pretty common sense to not put your full name on a site like that filled with the many strange people that u might find on there...so i don't know why they would really do a study since, like i said before, this is all common sense.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1rapidshare SUCKS - don't waste your time with this *****, use newsgroups.
- daxta002, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Try this-
It shud help you - http://nitchiddl.prophp.org - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I just use D3koy for everything....no names at all
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2duh, I coulda told you that. Most of the profiles on myspace are set to private, and most on facebook are set to private.
- TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Yawn
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Teenagers should be out having premarital sex and tagging buildings, not mucking about on my internet.
- Dissonance, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3digg down pls.
- punwin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0this just in: yu0 = fag0t
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Uh, hardly.
Natural selection is an ever changing beast designed to weed out the stupid and keep those who are competent.
We just have laws that treat everyone equally and nurture said stupidity, essentially circumventing this whole process.
Trust me, it's really toying with things. - fflush, on 10/12/2007, -25/+8THAT'S RACIST
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+2Who cares?
I don't get why people don't let natural selection run its course.
If a teen is stupid enough to put personal info on his page and get killed or whatever, then the better off the rest of us are.
Better than protecting them only to have them grow up to become president only to make other stupid mistakes. - punwin, on 10/12/2007, -37/+1WOW LUCKY I FOUND OUT THE SCOOP!
TO THINK I COULD HAVE GONE WITHOUT THIS KNOWLEDGE! - str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -60/+3and the winner for the most idiotic comment goes to you! Congratulations.
the report they're referring to is this one: http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/211/report_display.asp (read the 'source' that is less sensationalized)
