- cruzlee, on 06/11/2009, -1/+30I think the internet has also made at least ten times that amount of jobs obsolete.
- dazparkour, on 06/11/2009, -0/+24Really? That sounds a little low.
- dstory, on 06/11/2009, -4/+19And they are all web cam girls
- strictnein, on 06/11/2009, -1/+15If it pays the bills, then yes, it is.
- splinter09, on 06/11/2009, -1/+12.... and one of them is mine.
- matude, on 06/11/2009, -2/+10"I'm a guy who doesn't see anything good having come from the Internet. Period."
~Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton - Snoogs, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8Ohhh yeah... Any time you purchase something on line, about 3-4 people per transaction have nothing to do--without a physical retail location to maintain and registers to fill... Good or bad, this isn't 1.2M "new" jobs that just appeared.
- reddyap1, on 06/11/2009, -2/+9Think of how many Jobs have been lost by people playing World of Warcraft over the internet in their Mom's Basement
- Dream0Weaver, on 06/11/2009, -2/+8And think about how much more jobs legalizing Marijuana would make...
- TheUngod, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6Does this include all the UPS drivers to deliver our crap we order? The makers of computer hardware we need to use the internet? All the lawyers to sue people for piracy? There are a lot of jobs that have been created because of the internet's existence, while not being internet-based jobs themselves.
- chris8535, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6As a person who worked for IDG (ComputerWorlds parent operation) as an editor (laid off in March)... I can say this is BS and the writers know it. The facts might be straight, but ask the writers in that office if the guy to the and right of them have been laid off and if the internet economy has been able to pay any of them since their shifted emphasis from print.
For the most part, the internet creates a small fraction of the jobs it destroys. How do I know that... because I've seen the revenue models, and it generates only a small fraction of the revenue that was once produced for print editions. This could be just the media segment, but I have a feeling it reflects the root of the internet -- a place of near infinite supply but an un-monetize-able demand. - cruzlee, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6Working in IT is like wetting black pants. Nobody notices it, but it gives you a warm feeling.
- cruzlee, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6I just started playing it two weeks ago. Yesterday I caught myself thinking how convenient it would be to be unemployed. I hope it's not too late to quit....
... my job. - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6Anyone looking to hire?
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6If it pays how is it any different than a news anchorman or a newspaper reporter?
- thaitan, on 06/11/2009, -1/+5The internet is serious bizness.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3and mine!
- solid12345, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3I was told on 2am TV that I can make 10 grand a month on the internet, is this true?!
- petemcfraser, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3and mine.
- BESTenemy, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3At the rate we're losing jobs that number compensates for less than 3 months of unemployment growth. That would've been great if the internet was only 3 months old. Unfortunately, the stats talk about the last 10 years of the internet's existence. That's an average of 10 000 a month... and the IT sector is shedding jobs today like every other. The stats are bogus.
- borez, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3I thought it would be a lot higher then that to be honest.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -3/+6it completely saved UPS and companies like it
- LightSpeed4, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3keywords in this article is "over this last decade." That includes the tech bubble of 1999. This article doesnt say how many jobs were lost since. What a ***** article.
- localzuk, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3The internet is not just about online journalists you know. Online retailing is where the main money is at. Amazon for example...
- solid12345, on 06/11/2009, -1/+4If only I could get paid by digg postings
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3If it's not a computer taking over your job, or rendering your job obsolete, then it's going to be the billions of people prepared to do more for less.
- larrimer7, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2Once again, iOSX
LIKE!!! - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2I have been thinking about this for a while now... After being laid off from my graphic design job last year (after working at the same place for six years), I figured that I was one of the victims of the economy.... companies cutting back etc. "graphic design" doesnt really seem like a necessity in a struggling economy.
But after about 5 months, freelance work seemed to start flowing in rather steadily. Other colleagues of mine, mainly programmers, are also experiencing a huge surge of fresh work. Ive been busy now for the past 7 months and it doesnt seem to be slowing down making it seem like a pretty quick recovery for myself (knock on wood).
Maybe its a paradigm shift... less people mud bogging in V8 trucks and more people living online. We see that GM is worth nothing these days while websites like Youtube are worth BILLIONS. - dazparkour, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Youtube is a money hole through which millions of dollars a day are consumed.
- proliance, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2I didn't fire anyone today. Do I get credit for saving X number of jobs?
- krisrm, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2who wants to work for the RIAA at all?!
- stuffradio, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2If no one downloaded Music, who would want to work at RIAA!?
- Vedlen, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2and also revealed talented funny people.
- inajeep, on 06/11/2009, -2/+3Nothing about the sentence structure or the complete ignorance of capitalization?
- judahhertz, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1And who said surfing online was a waste of time. =)
- strictnein, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1But what about the jobs that were saved by the Internet Economy?
- neelb420, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1If you define the internet economy as ad-supported services, sure, but if you define the internet economy as a supportive service in general, I'm positive that it has "created" more jobs. Any loss in jobs would have to do with increased productivity related to computers in general or poor marketing relative to a new medium. However, in my opinion, majority, collective-based reports like this are very much outdated. Personally, I'm leaving forever even if they pave the roads with gold and allow cloning of supermodels as wives for free. Countries over with..just a matter of time for me.
- Atario, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1You know what would employ a lot of people? Laying the damn fiber to my (and everyone else's) house.
Get on it, government. - tekism, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1there are def more than 1.2 million porn actors/actresses
- secrity, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1If Wal Mart and Best Buy hadn't wiped out the small local stores, I would be concerned about physical locations. I don't care if Best Buy and Wal Mart lose sales to the internet.
- Neilstro, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1I think the internet has made it harder for people to get jobs. Since all the monster, careerbuilder, and other jobsites have been around, job postings and applications submitted per job have skyrocketed. Many companies won't even accept applications or resumes in person anymore, they just say apply online. Then your resume is diminished down to the right "keywords" that make it through a filter...
- smitty1701, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1I would have thought this number would be more. Although you have to agree that it has killed just as many.
- boozedrinker, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Obama said he create or save just under 500,000 jobs by the end of 2010, and by recent calculations, he better GET BUSY.
- skc0der, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1If you're asking - then no, you can't. But people more opportunistic and talented than yourself (Kevin Rose, for example) can definitely make that much and more.
- Whorebane, on 06/11/2009, -1/+2Not to mention how much efficiency the Internet and technology in general has added to other sectors of the economy.
- solid12345, on 06/11/2009, -1/+2Well movies have gotten ***** since the rise of the Internet...
- cubicledrone, on 06/11/2009, -1/+2And a ***** ***** of those new jobs were created by solid, competent people FIRED from the non-Internet-economy.
- larrimer7, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1And....reported
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -1/+2let's say for a second blogging is NOT a job. Building the servers and services to run it is a job. Mine. :-)
