- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a lot of different systems like this. And no, Apple did not invent it.
Blackboard is the most common one. - super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We use something very similar at the University of Maryland. It'a called Blackboard.
- DodgeV83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UMD also uses WEBCT. There are many systems like this out there.
- blinkfn45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey im starting a website like that to could you digg my story plzzzz
- annihillation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unbelievable. That's alot of money for such a stupid idea. Ive done 100's of things like that, for my company, and it hasn't banked me that much.
Nice template! - JWood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"We use something very similar at the University of Maryland. It'a called Blackboard."
We also use that at the University of South Carolina. - sewerhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a nice chunk of cash!
- sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just don't understand why a company would pay 1.25 million for that. Its not like it takes extraordinary programming skill and also this has been many times before with well established systems like blackboard and webct (my school uses it and its not that great, the forum is very badly done which is my biggest gripe).
- GT_Onizuka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We use Blackboard at the Illinois Institute of Technology too.
Well, he made money, that's cool and stuff. No digg though =| - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg!
- brewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blackboard is common at oregon state, as well. (go beavs!)
- abstractia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1birdadderley, I would congratulate him if I felt his product was worth 1.25 million dollars. What I saw was a poorly thought out website using an off-the-shelf theme (What is up with that annoying flash water effect?)
I also checked out the demo for the product itself, which appears just as poorly designed and implemented. I see no advantage whatsoever of this system over something proven like Blackboard.
This product isn't worth $125 bucks, certainly not 1.25 million.
There are much better, properly designed web apps out there - check out Convea: http://www.convea.com/ . It's a small operation as well, but they invested the effort to give the application an attrative interface.
It's great that our School system is working with junk like this to fill the No Child Left Behind act.
Congrats to the kid who sold this thing tho - I wish I could cash in like this on the half-assed web apps I've written. - kyo808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HATERS! We use blackboard also in Cali, but for those of you who said his site is ugly check out blackboard's (UI) site, that ***** is real ugly but it works. So what he got hella money for his site, how can you be mad at high school student for that. Lighten up. You guys spend to much time on you computers get out and live life...
- mp817, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Helllo people. He isnt original. There's something called PowerSchool, by Apple. They have it at my school. Don't know what it is? Look it up!
- graywolf323, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lucky bastard, though Blackboard seems to be better
- rhfootball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to Jasmine's website "It is a privately held firm". That means that their "stock" is illiquid and, probably, worthless.
This kid may have been taken to the cleaners!
http://rhfootball.blogspace.com/ - maskd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Convea is very extensive, but it is a shame that it is Internet Explorer.
- Newtylicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's also schoolnotes(.com) and progressbook. sounds similar to me.
- abstractia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beernutz, the interface for the demo is just as poor as the design for the marketing site. Not to mention BB has all of the features of this app and more.
This app looks like its straight out of 1998. Definitely doesn't fall under the Web 2.0 buzzword.
Again, congrats to the kid for pawning his junk off onto this company - but I don't think its the norm for this kind of work netting 1.25 mill. - beernutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys need to chill. The template site is the company that BOUGHT his site. His site is MUCH better! Check the demo links beofre you rail on the lame template of the site that bought it.
Here is a demo of the site they are talking about!
http://www.surfyourwork.com/demo/teacher/index2.php - Hot-screensaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So jealous...
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My school programmed their own. :)
- kawai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01.25 million in cash/stock options
$30 in cash and the rest in stock ;) - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a lot... oh wait... its canadian $$$ so it can't really be that much
Canadian $ pwns American $ severly - Dustin3737, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wtf, are you all just jealous?
- pixelmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a lot... oh wait... its canadian $$$ so it can't really be that much!
- xerves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should check out moodle. It is free. I honestly don't understand why someone would pay 1.25M for an app like that. The kid that sold it should go into marketing because that must of been one hell of a sell.
- JamesBond007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe his dad owns the company that bought his site.
- abstractia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I believe Convea used to support other browsers. With web applications I'm a bit more understanding of not supporting every browser under the sun.
- wahooka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0must be for the userbase because the site is ugly as hell
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand 90% of the negative comments here, the kid started the site his junior year, he's far from a professional, I say he sold it for 1.25 mil? Well, congrats to him.
- digicanmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet I live in Waterloo, Ontario!!
- wlloydda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you think his site is ugly, check out Blackboard's site at: http://www.blackboard.com/us/index.aspx
No way I'd buy an app from somebody whose home page is such a hacked up mess. - polymorphs, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0I wish my online efforts would nett me even half of that!!! http://matureageatudent.com
- theGREENsuit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The app is more than just its skin. Are most of the complainers here too focused on what it looks like and not focused enough on what it does? And who cares if it's not an original idea, really? As a consumer, I welcome variety and competition.
He deserves a pat on the back for initiative, focus, hard work and success. - eyckzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow.. thats just crazy.
I used to use those sites that did my homework for me. :P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is reeeeeeeeally motivating me to finish my site- and bring home the bacon...
how much money can be made with google ads?
agfh, i just want to be RICH - astar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can understand why you guys are hating, you guys are probably sitting at home in your parents basement fuming while a guy who's under 20 just made a quarter of a million cash US and owns a hefty share of the company that bought him out, it pisses me off as well. i can understand why you're mad, how could it possibly be fair that a sub 20 yr old who worked his ass off make that kind of money? i mean it couldn't have been his skill or the fact that he was willing to put work and effort into his site. oh and you're absolutely right, i mean there are other programs out there that cost thousands to schools for the right to use, upkeep, maintain, buy the rights to, buy the server space for, etc for such user "friendly" interfacs (cough, cough WebCT). i mean the fact that his is comepelty free, interactive, uses the latest encryption codes, has some of the best design technologies out there and is completly web based on idependent servers should completley deter the thousands of schools already using it from using it. i mean if we can think of so man flaws, i'm sure we could invest 3 years of work to create something better, something that has more than a claendar, an integrated realtime chat client, file uploading, file compression, scheduals, tutorial sessions, etc, etc. what do you think? let's get to it, and perhaps 10 of us in this blog could do as good a job in 5 yrs as a single teenager did in 3 and if we're lucky we could share a ***** load of cash between us, what do you say?
- Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wtf?! At my highschool (thats right, HIGHschool, not college) we HAVE to do this in our website class. Our class is making a system that does exactly what this kid is doing. Not only that, but its completely customized and runs on our own server and everything, and I would gladly trade the 'A' I got in that class for a cool million. So basically our students write one of these systems and we get nothing (except the occasional bitching from administration about how xyz isn't to their liking) and this kid gets over a million for a project he just started to learn php/mysql which we've been doing for years?! I swear to god, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this kid ends up owning Microsoft when Bill Gates kicks the bucket. Talk about unfair!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought everyone basically used blackboard
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My school is currently testing the open source Sakai(http://www.sakaiproject.org/) as a replacement for webCT.
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's stories like this that make me wish I had created a cheap-ass web site out of every idea that ever popped into my head.
- dergachev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It could be for the userbase. Thats probably why ebay overpaid for skype. Also, of relevance to people discussing webct and blackboard: slashdot had a story on the merger of blackboard and webCT: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/12/2053257&from=rss
Their discussion of the matter was more interesting than the stuff here, btw. - mico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to live in the neighbourhood were Lower Canada College is located. LCC is for kids with filthy rich parents. It's a 10,000$/semester _high school_.
I'm sure his parents are well off (consider that my university tuition is around half that amount). I would suspect his parents had something to do with the deal. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lucky bastard!
- Majdaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF???
i have dreamweaver open RIGHT NOW coding the SAME EXACT THING!!!!!
kinda pisses me off that i'm doing this for free.... - rhfootball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not quite 1.25M in cash. It's 1.25M in "cash and stock". Let's see what that stock's worth when he tries to sell it. He may have been paid in worthless wampum.
http://rhfootball.blogspot.com/ - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0surfyourwork.com is one of the ugliest sites I have ever seen. Wow. He got lucky on that one didn't he.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0BTW.. i reckon DIGG is cool. But the comments are vile and evil and retarded!
Its like Ghostbusters 2 i think, all the 'dupe', 'whinging' and dumb comments are making an evil river of pink goo under the cities across the world. I could be onto something? I'd make it a story and submitt it, but it'd either get shot down with more whinging comments (more goo) or it'd make the front page, and the curse would be broken. - kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Isn't that like a blogger template? Wow will teacher websites ever be good?
