- CitizenKane, on 10/11/2007, -25/+280when will people stop using "killer" to describe a competitor?
- popiculo, on 10/11/2007, -11/+229That looks pretty damn awesome.
- ClassicQ, on 10/11/2007, -35/+181I'm growing tired of Kevin's ***** aka being a Hypocrite with this http://blog.wired.com/business/2007/07/diggdown-revisi.html or the entire HD DVD Keys fiasco --- to the gimmicky, and revenue driven [Pay for a Pro account - No ads? We don't see them anyway ;-), larger files - there are already many free options from Darknets to torrents] Pownce --- why not just ***** include instant messaging into digg? To those worried about Spam etc. a simple block user will easily put an end any garbage.
This looks good, I requested an invite. Hopefully some real competition, will force digg to implementing some new features. While the corporate world may be enthused with Mr. Rose, doesn't mean we are, nor is it the pulse of those who are the real driving force --- the users!
It's about time we see some competition. - ClassicQ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+117BTW, one of the focuses of any improvement of digg, should be the search feature, which is Completely USELESS. It's pretty sad that the only way to search what you're looking for and obtain relevant results, is to google. Either fix it or remove the feature, as it doesn't provide any added value, but rather detracts from the value of digg on the whole.
- quomen, on 10/11/2007, -31/+137Nice, a Digg killer. I'm down for anything that will put Kevin Rose in his place and realize that Digg is not the be all end all of social bookmarking sites and that he should put stupid ideas like pownce in the background. Maybe fix the comment system. Maybe add a picture section. Maybe fix the search option. LOTS of improvements can be made which are being blatantly ignored. If streamy is the solution, so be it. Streamy it is.
- protossss, on 10/11/2007, -10/+86But then how will Digg buy Google so we can get better search??
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -12/+71I'm personally looking for a site similar to Digg but with a Slashdot community. Unfortunately Digg comments are usually nothing to bother with.
- Dested, on 10/11/2007, -0/+40I would have thought so too, but god damn that preview looked pretty damn awesome.
- Terrin, on 10/11/2007, -8/+47For me it doesn't look like a digg killer. Just another website to satisfy my crave for online news.
- cklol, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39When people get some sense so... never.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36i'm just happy that they didn't call it Steamr
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39Umm... 'cus the Slashdot community usually knows what they're talking about?
Maybe I'll change my mind if Linux Torvalds or John Carmack starts posting here on digg. - Roger, on 10/11/2007, -9/+43I love how Rose takes credit for fixing the whole HD DVD key mess, as if he ever had a choice.
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34Google could probably make a 100x better digg clone if they wanted to.
- bradallen18, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34I hope they have good servers. that much content with such little load? i donno.
- kaph, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32You do realise that your comment could fall under your "nothing to bother with" comment? Half the fun of digg is the comments, even the crappy comments are still entertaining or more to the point, the response to those comments. The only thing that has put me off digg lately is the new comment system grinding my browser to an almost dead halt and throwing up the occasional script error or four :( Without the comments it would be like any other boring blog or news site.
- gregmo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28This is more what i expected from Google Reader, and wouldn't be surprised if they take some hints from streamy, because it looks pretty well done
- quomen, on 10/11/2007, -7/+32I, and the whole digg community has been making suggestions.. For a long long time. The point is that many of the improvements and features he has been promising is not coming to light. And you just reiterated what I was saying. If I find a better site that fulfills my needs moreso than digg does, then i'll be using that. I'm not asking him anything. I'm just saying, if I find a better site (which also will be free) then I will go use that one. I'm not being a Kevin Rose hater, i'm just saying that i'm glad there are other sites with a seemingly better design that could compete with digg. And where else am I to voice my thoughts about this website.. should I picket on the steps of DiggHQ until it's fixed? NO, because I have better things to do with my life and it doesn't me bother me enough.]
blah i type too much.
duggededered down time - gavinrobinson, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31yeah, let's see how it handles the digg effect...or the streamy effect. whatever.
- kwaigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25I remember when there was an article like this one on slashdot about digg...
- omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -25/+49Put Kevin Rose in his place? First off, it's HIS company, not yours. He can have as many side projects as he wants; he has put out this product for you to the best of his and the Digg team's ability for free, and therefore owes you nothing. What more could you possibly ask of him? Second, no one assumes that Digg is the be all end all of bookmarking sites, but it's certainly one of the better developed ones out there. Found something better than Digg? Then go. No one's forcing you to stay here. Also, improvements take time to make. Know a way to make instant improvements? I'm sure Kevin's all ears. I've grown tired of Kevin-haters and Kevin-worshipers alike, I mean come on, he's just one man. I don't know what you people have grown to expect of him, but of course it's easy for you to say what you will from the comfort and privacy of your own chairs.
- fragsta, on 10/11/2007, -5/+27It looks cool, but sometimes simplicity wins in this sort of situation. Does Streamy do TOO much? See the Streamy story to discuss this at...
- Vich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22When the brutal relentless killing performed by competitors stops. These competitors are out there and seem to be able to strike at any moment. The casualties are horrendous: hours of browsing digg and multiple cringes at corny titles. Diggers we must make a stand.
- kylesellers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Yeah except when a story regarding that gets dugg, it gets deleted. Remember http://digg.com/programming/Bury_the_search_bar ???
Go ahead try and read any of those comments and you get redirected to http://digg.com/error. - toast1226, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Streamy looks like it has a lot of features and a lot of things seem to be easily accessible in a few clicks. The only potential problem I see with it is that it could take awhile getting used to initially, and how ready users are to adopt a new site.
- sharobichaud, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Apparently enough people read them to digg you down.
- ncotton, on 10/11/2007, -8/+24Maybe they would if you could spell both their names correctly...
- djh816, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16or just implement in a google search url that takes the text formt he search and goes to google with that and site:digg.com in the search
- Skanadian, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Yay, I can share information with friends I don't have just by dragging the article in!
Seems awesome, dugg. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18If it gets popular its goodbye digg for me. Im tired off diggs *****, But until something better comes along ill stay with it.
- astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -13/+26Digg will be killed by its buggy, poorly designed, and utterly useless comment system. But Streamy might just help it along.
- uptown, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15For as much as Digg bills itself as a "social news site" it really doesn't use the social part of what it's compiled very much. Streamy seems to blend those elements better than Digg currently does. Of course, I expect these features are probably coming in future Digg releases ... and I imagine that Pownce will be blended in as a Digg module down the road as well ... but Streamy looks nice.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14By 7am Steamy will have over a 1000 requests from diggers to check it out
- omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20And that's more than understandable. My comment was mostly out of frustration at all the diggers that constantly heckle the site to no end and loudly threaten to leave without ever doing so. Since I first started using digg about two years ago (my username then was crzyomarcito, to those who will inevitably start background checks) I have seen the quality in the comments go further and further down the drain. As much as I wish that would change, I don't spend time proclaiming it to the digg heavens because I know that I'm just going to have to either find a new site or deal with it. I started losing patience with the diggers (not digg) after the HD-DVD key fiasco (I'm sorry, but that to me was pathetic). I wanted to find some stories; I could give a crap less if they took down the key, didn't affect me at all. People continue to fail to realize that digg is a company, and is bound to the same rules as any other company, like it or not. Cease and desist? First choice of most (other than maybe Pirate Bay) would be to comply. Trademark infringement? They played it nice for a while, but eventually they had to make diggdown change the name (either you protect it or you lose it, that's just the law). I'm amazed that Kevin bothered to stick out his neck and post the key himself, they way everyone seems to be so bipolar with the guy. One minute you praise him, the next you're beheading the guy. He's made himself quite public compared to those of other sites, but of course when you make yourself seem approachable, there is always the risk of becoming a scapegoat (well, he's not the only one at digg you know). I miss the days when you could go to the comments and actually have some sort of, you know, conversation without seeing flamewars at every turn.
But I got a bit off topic. guomen: Believe me, I understand that digg is nowhere near perfect, but, well, I dunno. Maybe I'm just having trouble letting go of what once was digg before it got infested with people who act like kids.
Don't worry, you're not the only one who types a lot. =) - Roger, on 10/11/2007, -11/+23Would it help if I said that was supposed to be ironic?
No? - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I agree cause I spend time on digg, fark, and reddit equally
- xigxag, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12You didn't mention that the recommendation on that error page is "Try searching for the story you're looking for using the form above."
Classic. - astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14***** you. Tap water is all you need.
- HUKI365, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14If Google bought Streamy and combined it with their blogger, MySpace and Digg would be dead in the water.
Maybe a good thing? - Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11It's not so much digg as it is a big ass RSS reader.
- PhireN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Google human rank (BETA)
- kuujjuaqguy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Dugg comment for being the most accurate comment EVER about digg, why the ***** not just build in an IM like streamy, dont need pounce, what a waste of space. and this is coming from a diggnation fanboy.
- illt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Holy InfoPorn.
Looks fantastic, can't wait to try. - gklitt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Slashdot is mostly knowledgable people with good input on stories. Digg's community, although it can occasionally be funny, is largely comprised of immature all-caps commenters with not much to contribute.
- fiveoaks, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13I prefer Netvibes. Read feeds in place minus the hokey social aspect.
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21digg is dead
- ps3udov3ctor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9if the ***** loads faster and the comment system makes sense, then sign me up.
- CaptShmo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11looks good, digg is great and i don't see it getting toppled, but i said the same thing about slashdot when digg first came out...
- YourMaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9If that's your mistake, then even without accidents you still did it wrong.
- salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Not specifically - well coded AJAX is quite capable of updating URLs on dynamic pages as well as using dynamic URLs to generate content.
