- gnews, on 02/18/2009, -1/+36FTA: Fry is the global heavyweight of Twitter, with 200,000 active followers – more than any other, including US president Barack Obama.
- SupComTabz, on 02/18/2009, -0/+33Fry is so awesome. He got those followers in 1/4th the time of anyone else.
- EnderMB, on 02/18/2009, -1/+30If you've never heard of Stephen Fry then shame on you! He's probably the most witty, intelligent and friendly actor/host/comedian of the past couple of decades. Go watch a couple of episodes of QI or listen to his podgrams if you're still sceptical. He's one of very few celebrities I'm proud to call British.
On top of that he's a big techie'. Check out his video on GNU and read his Blog. It's surprising how much he really knows about the subject, on top of everything else. - techAU, on 02/18/2009, -0/+18Now we need him to tackle the Australian Internet Filter.
- drunkenoaf, on 02/18/2009, -0/+17Only because of ***** that ruin it for everyone that wants to use it as an encyclopedia, rather than a graffiti wall.
- pitdog, on 02/18/2009, -0/+17I have a man crush on Steven Fry. He is a genius, a very nice, intelligent man.
- TheManikin, on 02/18/2009, -2/+17I'll be honest, I had to look him up on wikipedia. Found a good line :
"He claims to hold the UK record for saying "*****" the most times on a live television broadcast." - mandarin, on 02/18/2009, -0/+15I believe he is also a gadget freak...
Great actor too - wigglypig, on 02/18/2009, -1/+12"Guilt By Accusation" law basically.
Your ISP will disconnect your internet connection if someone ACCUSES you of file sharing.

Diggers don't like the RIAA? Well this is as a direct result of their lobbying the New Zealand government. It's not just about NZ, its a slippery slope which will likely spread to other countries. - Stonekeeper, on 02/18/2009, -0/+10and a great believer in open source, linux and freedom.
- sapheron, on 02/18/2009, -0/+10Locals should get out to the protest at parliament at noon today. The petition is handed over at 12:30.
http://creativefreedom.org.nz/story.html?id=127 - wigglypig, on 02/18/2009, -0/+10For those of you who don't know who Stephen Fry is, you're probably totally familiar with "House"? (Hugh Laurie). Though you may not have realized Hugh Laurie is British. They were a brilliant comedy duo for many years back in the 80s.
Grey and Hopeless! Watch this now!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbBmJWGbFM8 - Stonekeeper, on 02/18/2009, -2/+12That's because Stephen Fry is a frickin legend!
- aaronjason8992, on 02/18/2009, -1/+9Finally this reaches the frontpage. About frikin time
- wigglypig, on 02/18/2009, -0/+7Why yes it is.
- krazeguy, on 02/18/2009, -0/+7This law is a mess ...
- serif69, on 02/18/2009, -1/+7And follows a quarter of them right back. I have no idea how he can possibly manage that. FWIW, I'm one of those 50k or so. It made me happy when I got the message "Stephen Fry is now following you on Twitter!"
- Frankyfan3, on 02/18/2009, -1/+7*gasp*
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2364/2231875113_767 ... - aenima987, on 02/18/2009, -0/+6You guys should watch the TV series of him going around America. It's really funny and interesting without taking shots at America.
- latrosicarius, on 02/18/2009, -0/+6is this the same steven fry who read me harry potter on audio books? Sorry, site's blocked for me...
- wigglypig, on 02/18/2009, -1/+7....Oh christ, I've left the iron on!
- kitsua, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Blocked.
- barryiggins, on 02/18/2009, -1/+6***** awesome
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5No. We're in a flap because they can disconnect your internet if someone simply accuses you of copying something. No proof required. It's not even a case of guilty until proven innocent, it's "Guilty. GFTOKTHXBYE"
Of course, if all ISP's were to disconnect all customers who downloaded a few copyrighted songs/movies/tv shows, they'd have no customers at all so they be *****. Even the ISP's don't want this law - it'll cost them valuable customers - drunkenoaf, on 02/18/2009, -0/+5I am British, and I love the programme House.
But I just can't believe that people think that Hugh Laurie is American. I just can't. It's not a bad accent... but it sounds like an Englishman putting on an american accent. - inactive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+5Bring back Jeeves and Wooster!
- aaronjason8992, on 02/18/2009, -0/+4Fuk national if this bill goes forward
- Gizza, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Except that you don't even need to be found guilty to be guilty. In what ***** up world is that ever perfectly right?
- WillWork4Food, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Stephen Fry is all over Rowan Atkinson's Black Adder, if you've seen that.
His best work? I have no clue, but he's really good in it. V for Vendetta as well.
Considering the fact that New Zealand legalized the distillation of alcoholic spirits for home use in October 1996, one of the few nations that allow 'moonshining', I have a very hard time castigating them for much of anything.
This new regulation is obviously poorly thought out, though. I wonder if outside forces (Hollywood, RIAA, cough, cough) are trying to influence legislation in a country thought to be inconsequential to establish a precedent they can then use elsewhere. - Gareth321, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Armchair politics much?
The amendment makes it legal for any party to accuse another party that belongs to an ISP and have them CUT OFF. No evidence required. The onus of innocence then lies with the defendant. How can one be asked to prove a negative?
Your comment makes me sick and you're an ignorant fool for not even reading the 40 lines or so of the amendment before bitching about something you've you idea of. - WoollyMittens, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Remember that corporate media giants are pushing for this sort of legislation everywhere. Are you one of the "I do nothing wrong, so I have nothing to fear" crowd? Then good luck to you, because you only need 3 accusations, no proof, no recourse, no mediation, to lose your internet connection and quite possibly your livelyhood for a very long time.
- Taktic, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3Hehe.
- zemkacz, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3Changed my FB to a black avvy
Same with digg's avvy
Anyone else change their digg avatar to a black thing to? - slayermet420, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4I blacked out my Facebook and Twitter icons a few days ago, thanks to Stephen Fry doing this.
And the technical term is "Tweets" not "Twitters". - bombmaster2, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4Don't mess with my internets....
- wigglypig, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3Agreed!
Get Your Ass In Here!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUKOebCbINc - Gizza, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3All we have to do is accuse the politicians and ISP execs. Once they're disconnected from the net perhaps they will think about changing the law.
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4***** This. I live in NZ, might have have to look into a tunneling service. ***** THE RIANZ!!
- MrSkills, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Fantastic. I had never heard that. Thanks.
- rupertd, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Amen brother. We need all the help we can get with this bs.
- sakesaru, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I like your way of thinking, and will be taking action on that =D
- MrSkills, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Makes a nice, light-hearted companion piece to Alistair Cooke's America. Another man from Fry's sphere of wit and charm.
- setset, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2ohh I got dugg down. I forgot the /s
- drunkenoaf, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2This law is an ass
- stagnate, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2? its been here before
- Taktic, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2Glad this finally made it to the front page http://digg.com/world_news/New_Zealand_Internet_bl ...
- darkism, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2But the ***** is immediately reverted because there's an army of moderators with no lives watching every page like hawks.
- Elranzer, on 02/19/2009, -1/+3Does being the global heavyweight of Twitter actually mean anything?
It's like being the winner of the Special Olympics... you're still retarded. - mentallyimprd, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I know I shouldn't respond to a troll, but I'm a Kiwi so here goes: that's a ***** racist thing to say. Go ***** yourself.
- pumanegra2012, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Freedom is unnegotiable
