- PropelMedia, on 11/13/2008, -3/+18This is really unfortunate, legitimate seo's / web marketers provide valuable services but a few rotten people tarnish the entire industries reputation.
- Julie188, on 11/13/2008, -1/+12Buyer beware -- scams have always been around, but seems like the web makes them easier to do.
- D3IM0S, on 11/13/2008, -2/+8I couldn't agree with you more... SEO is such a tricky world which lends itself to the scam artists who can promise the world with a buyer who has no clue what the truth actually is. The simple rule of thumb with SEO is simple though, if someone promises you page 1, run for the hills. If someone shows you past work they did that got to number 1 but makes sure to say that every site is unique and past performance does not in any way indicate future results, they *may* be reputable.
- axiomflash, on 11/14/2008, -2/+7Google result #2 for "visible.net":
"Rip-off Report: Webmarketingsource.com, Captures.com, Visible.net ..."

Ironic, isn't it? - SteaminTmann, on 11/14/2008, -2/+7Alot of SEO is just voodoo anyway. What gets you hits is content, and links to and from other sites. That's about it. Meta information will only take you so far.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4Hooliganism is the American way?
I don't think so. - nikki2300dk, on 11/14/2008, -1/+5SEO rip-offs are becoming all to common. Some SEO consultants present themselves as big know-it-alls in a field where no one can know it all. I work for a fairly large international company and one SEO firm got us blacklisted from google. But it was a great learning experience. Now we've gone DIY and developed our own strategy internally and are getting really good results. The more people at different levels of a project are considering SEO the better the result, and there is less optimising to do after the fact. Which is especially important because no one ever gets enough time to optimise SEO before a site launch.
- theutopian, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4You're very wrong. I work as an SEO Specialist at an Internet Marketing Company and we pride ourselves in not being blackhatters. The point of SEO is NOT about circumventing the system, it's about understanding the system and following the rules when developing a website. It's not about doing magic tricks, it's about making sure websites are standards compliant and follow the rules set forth by the Search Engine Gods. Most companies would rather pay someone else to worry about this stuff than learn about it all themselves. Effective SEO has a better ROI than paid search, ALWAYS.
- etx313, on 11/14/2008, -2/+6A large number of SEO outfits are a scam.
- acatzr800, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4I swear to God, I'll pistol whip the next guy that says 'shenanigans!'

Hand Crafted HTML Since 1995 - moredown, on 11/13/2008, -3/+5Very unfortunate... but 'tis the American way or something, right?
- Finalreminder, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3Dugg for "shenanigans"
and these bastards need all the exposure possible, - theutopian, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2No, there are no guarantees. But there are standards that websites need to follow for them to be relevant and ranked well in Search Engines. Most web designers (ooohhhh flash!) and most businesses (oohhhh flash!) are usually unaware of these standards. There are no guarantees. But why chance it and ruin your chances of quality organic search traffic (which is more effective than paid search)?
- FredFredrickson, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2No *****.
- YouAreDead, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2nothing new
- Naqaj, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2what the heck is a mom-and-pop site?
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2See how that works? you get ripped off and the government sues. and the government and lawyers get the money.
- WhiteCloud, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2At its core that is what SEO is but it is more than simply throwing a bunch of content up on a site and getting links to it. How you present the content is important, how you structure your site and link internally is important, what kind of links you get is important, etc. It is not as simple as producing a bunch of content you need to make sure the way you present that content is amenable to search engines and that the content you are creating is what potential visitors are looking for.
- jeexbit, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2I'm not really sure if I believe in a real value for SEO. I mean to a point, yes...but really, there are never any guarantees are there?
- MicroMacro, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2That's true, SEO is mostly about link building and content. Getting a ton of quality links is a real, full-time job though and a specialty. If the professionals would tell their clients the truth -- that the majority of keywords and phrases they want to rank for aren't doable -- it would be far less of a mysterious niche on the web. But everyone seems to keep giving ridiculous promises that can never be fulfilled, short of some sick cash and a full-time marketing team, so most will probably continue to see it as a negative thing.
- etx313, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Heh, no they really are. I am currently fighting off one for my client ( a casino ) that want's $20k a MONTH for SEO and they can't even explain what they would be doing for that amount of money. It's a buzzword scam.
- acatzr800, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Indeed.
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1They just perfected it....
You can see for e.g the Spaniards coming, not the Americans so much.
Now can I interest you in a home loan? - WhiteCloud, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Whooosh
- mrmyerz, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1I noticed allot of negative info here are some other things to look at to be somewhat objectionable about the situation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiPITNqSVLY - SAEJO, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2I work in the SEO industry and I think think this is great. SEO companies often have get a bad rep, and the reason is because of ***** like these guys. Maybe the industry can be cleaned up a little bit and give reputable companies a good name.
- theutopian, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2That may be all that's to it, but you'd be surprised at how many people don't understand this simple concept. Clients often just don't get that the way for customers to find you is to provide relevant content. This coming from someone who works in Internet Marketing. You have to hold their hand and convince them that good copy is worthwhile in addition to making sure their website meets all the standards that the Search Engines look for. This is beyond the knowledge and skills of most people.
- cybrguy, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1I support states doing this. because they are doing it on behalf of all the little guys, this wasn't pushed for by any big corp.
- theutopian, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1No, they're not.
- rncweb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0Just all the ones that have called me telling me my site is no good and they can get me to the top of the search engines. They don't even know what keywords I am targeting, because if they would bother to check I am already on the first page for the keywords I care about.
- intmailmc, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1This has been going on for years not sure why it surprises anyone
- theutopian, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1But most people don't want to bother learning to do it themselves. They'd rather write a check and have it taken care of for them.
- rncweb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0sounds like you work for the company erichh
- assassinave, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1I agree. To be good at SEO, is to basically risk a client being blacklisted. SEO is not really a matter of being a developer its being a good researcher. It also depends what market you're in. If you're in insurance....good luck with that. Tips: Your title maybe the most important. Followed by quality keyworded content and the updating and sharing of it.
Never make a million landing pages that link back to a page. This is what shady hosting, Usenet, warez sites do. I don't think it'd help anyones reputation to look like a that. - javarox, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Agreed. I am so sick and tired of hearing and seeing that word. I have a brother-in-law that says that word every 10 to 15 minutes! Gah! Why do people hang on to words and phrases like that, when they've obviously been overused and run their course?
- itcoll, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1i have always been puzzled by the seo
- erichh, on 11/14/2008, -2/+2They have gobs of resources available. And can set you up with some real help
- Finalreminder, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Could be worse, could be gubbins
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1The whole internet is one big scam.
- rYno, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1*CLAPS* There are so many rip off SEO's around that give good quality SEO's a bad name... Just glad somebody is actually doing something about it for once!
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1That sucks. I wonder if its going to be recognizable by Google?
- hdrkid, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1To stop seo scam we should have certification to be an seo.
- rncweb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0mom-and-pop is a site run by a small company, usually run by one or two people. You know, a family run site, by mom and dad. They usually don't have the time or knowledge to do SEO. They are the easiest prey because they do not know how to get to the top of the search engines. They are busy trying to run a business and probably have very limited time to work with the site.
- rncweb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0just because they received that award for marketing success doesn't mean they are a good company. Just slick, they must have suckered a lot of website owners.
- edm2001, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0Ripping off unsuspecting customers is nothing new, glad to see some form of government input.
