- geekchic, on 06/03/2008, -0/+8This submission was brought to my attention via a "shout"
- orientis, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I wonder how many people send shouts out about stories they didn't submit? I mean, the point is to provide interesting content for the rest of the users, right? Not to achieve some sort of pseudo-notoriety on a webpage by having a high number next to the 'Front page articles' in your profile. No, only sad, sad losers would fight for that sort of kudos, right?
Digg is starting to ***** me to tears. Stop talking about yourself, ffs. You are not as interesting as you think you are. Digg is a news aggregator, almost exactly like Fark, except with more user input. If people just submit stories that are interesting, people will Digg them. This crazy obsession with who submits the article is absolutely pointless - the only people who pay attention are those with an infantile interest in raising their succesful submissions, those who make money off of Digg somehow and internet drama queens. Everyone else wishes you idiots would stfu and gbtw. I buried this story, because I think it's pathetic and that stories like this make Digg worse. - gbarberi, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3The shouting is not so bad; the IMing is, though. It's just not what it was intended for. Shouts for stories; IMing for socializing.
Digg needs to work on the way content is promoted. There's no reason why allowing more tech news to be promoted has to push out other content. Perhaps they should try a more hierarchical approach to the front page - promote content to the homepages of each category and then pull form there to the main homepage. If users demand more of a particular category, then tweak the algo to promote more for that category - but it doesn't have to hit the main homepage. I think Digg has always been like this. I remember when I first signed up, it was mostly content from the offbeat section hitting the homepage.
The spam in the queue is there because the majority of users don't even take the time to bury it. The Digg team has stated that if a post receives enough buries, it gets knocked off the queue. Some participation from the rest of the Digg community would go a long way in cleaning up the clutter down there.
Same thing would help new users get there stuff promoted more. Participation in the form of votes from diggers. - lazycat, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I think Digg would be a better place, if they limit submissions to 1-2 per day from the same person. This would force everyone to submit only the best of what they've got. Sure there are a lot of exiting news every day, but give others a chance to report them.
Unfortunately, it looks like Digg team is still thinking more in terms of page impressions and ads income, than building a decent community. :( - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2I agree, people should not bother with who submits an article. It shouldn't even matter. I think you are missing that it does matter.
- orientis, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2How does it matter to me? If I choose not to take an interest, then it makes no difference to me, except when I have to trawl through comments saying "MrBabyMan again" like I give a flying *****. Get over it. Digg will die a thousand deaths in the next five years then something better will come along. It's a website, not a self-esteem generator.
- LadyOBOF, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1I like digg. I don't understand the shouts. I am sorry I missed the Digg conference in NYC last Weds.
- i88gerbils, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1After reading the blog post, I have to say that #2 and #3 help explain how users deal with spam on digg. Have you clicked on the Upcoming link? Digg is constantly spammed with advertisements, videos, pics, whatever... So no wonder no one uses it to find interesting articles, and just waits to get an IM or a shout.
As for #1, it's not Digg, but mainstream society you need to blame. Most of the FP content on Digg is the same ***** you'd find watching your local news -- Dog bites man in the butt, film at 11. Who cares? The retards that use Digg, that's who. If only we had a torrent of intelligence come through and bury ***** articles before they gain enough momentum of idiocy to infect the front page. - orientis, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1No irony there at all. It's almost the opposite of irony.
- iching, on 06/03/2008, -1/+1LOL........... No irony there!

What is Digg?
