- chris8535, on 02/11/2008, -10/+154Unfortunately this is innaccurate... its free for qualifying AT&T subscribers.
- CraigJ, on 02/11/2008, -2/+89In other news, most other coffee places have completely free open wi-fi. At least in Phoenix...
- JuStein, on 02/11/2008, -3/+85Submitter needs to take his egotistical head out of his ass (as i predicted).
- Nobles350, on 02/11/2008, -2/+79Bah. I'll still go to the local coffee shop across the street. Their wi-fi has been free for years and the coffee is better.
- SemiSarcastic, on 02/11/2008, -3/+56At least now I'll have something to do in a Starbucks. I always just fire up my laptop and pretend I'm doing something so I'll look cool.
- LaRue05, on 02/11/2008, -1/+40Christ... did no one RTFA!! It's NOT FREE!!
"It's available to Starbucks debit card users and Starbucks partners only.
Non-cardholding customers can pay $3.99 for two hours -- which, of course, will incent customers to get the debit card. Monthly membership will cost $19.99 per month, and will enable access to AT&T's 70,000 hot spots in 89 countries." - BenKenobi88, on 02/11/2008, -4/+30That's because you, sir, are a tool...make your own damn coffee and eat some toast.
- Trixcan, on 02/11/2008, -3/+29I heard they were hurting for business. This should have been a given from day 1.
- coit, on 02/11/2008, -1/+24Panera Bread FTW
- DarkDx, on 02/11/2008, -4/+25The feeling gets 3 times greater when you're using a Macbook Air
- afeitarse, on 02/11/2008, -4/+25Well, it looks like you have to get a Starbucks debit card to get the free hours. No thanks! Marked as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -1/+21I do that with my cell phone, I pretend like I'm text messaging girls.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 02/11/2008, -0/+19As long as they charge a single penny for wifi, I will go to Panera where it is always free
- snowbooch, on 02/11/2008, -12/+28apparently not that bad as they're a $13B company. but hey it sounds cool to say it right?
- terrix, on 02/11/2008, -4/+18Not accurate, its only "free" to AT&T broadband subscribers and those purchasing with a Starbucks Gift Card.
- henrymiller, on 02/11/2008, -3/+17If Starbucks was smart, they would offer free wifi. That way, people would stay at Starbucks longer, and Starbucks could work to recreate that "homey" atmosphere that they've lost in recent years.
- TypeEE, on 02/11/2008, -0/+13Exactly, they are still too selfish when other small stores are generously giving out free wifi, yet get starbucks need a debit card to get free wifi? That's not free.
- JordanTW90, on 02/11/2008, -0/+13Make sure to store your Air in a manila envelope for dramatic effect.
- spyrochaete, on 02/11/2008, -2/+14Also, write your own web pages, fix your old 486, and save your glass jars to keep stuff in.
- GhostyBoy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+12I'm in a coffee shop right now surfing online for free.
- arjung, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11my local McDonald's as free unlimited wifi. ***** you very much, starbucks.
- ozanweb, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11Yeah in Seattle also. The only coffee place I know that DOESN'T have free access is Starbucks.
So, way to go Starbucks, way to revolutionize the coffee industry by this bold move of partially making your wifi access 'free'. - SemiSarcastic, on 02/11/2008, -0/+10If that's true then just to piss them off I'll hit all the Alex Jones websites, theonion.com, along with a pro George W. Bush forum where I'll type about how gay I am for Dick Cheney, then I'll also go to hillary.com, hit their forums and express my uncompromising love for her. I'll also go to obama.com, and then end it by going through a dozen porn sites. The NSA will think I'm the most schizophrenic user ever...with a redhead fetish.
- alby13, on 02/11/2008, -3/+13you live a sad existance.
- mraustin1337, on 02/11/2008, -1/+10While Starbuck's Coffee is by no means golden they do a pretty good job for how large they are. I am a coffee snob myself and avoid Starbucks on as many occasions as possible, choosing local coffee shops instead. However if you compare Starbucks with say Seattle's Best... Seattle's Best tastes disgusting. They have no standards for making their coffee and often times they let the shot go bad and then put the milk in, souring your entire cup of coffee. Starbucks at least has a few beans that even though they are quite expensive are quite good -- additionally they don't use the really good beans in their standard cups of coffee. Also Starbucks is a great place to purchase any sort of coffee device, their Starbuck's Barista Machines are amazing and produce excellent coffee. The best part by far though is the fact that they have the best customer service out of any I've found. My coffee machine broke once and I was able to take it back to the store the next day where they immediately gave me a brand new machine and apologized for the inconvenience, now that is service.
Say what you will about their cups of coffee because it is milk, sugar and a little coffee but as a company they do a great job and really deserve the place they maintain in coffee. - stevekeller, on 02/11/2008, -1/+10The feeling of buyers remorse when you finally realize that you purchased overpriced coffee and laptops?
- ElGigi, on 02/11/2008, -1/+10Here in Chile WiFi is free in Starbucks :)
- diulei, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9Problem is, in McSuburbia, US, these mythical "local coffee shops" don't exist. On the rare occasion you find one, it'll be 5 times the distance than your nearest 'Bucks.
- sickrubik, on 02/11/2008, -1/+10The cards are free at least.
- sockpuppets, on 02/11/2008, -8/+172girls1latte.
- alby13, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9it's not even news. many other places offer free wi-fi and have been for quite some time.
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9was anyone else who doesnt hang out at starbucks already under the assumption that the wifi was already free?
- snowbooch, on 02/11/2008, -5/+13i hate to break it to you, but if you don't think microsoft built the value of their company by contributing to the personal computing revolution, you're an idiot.
it is not possible to separate an organization into it's (corporate) functions and value them separately, it is what it is. gap shirts don't necessarily have to be made of better cotton than kmart's to command more worth.
i use a mac btw. - JEWestbrookJR, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9So by your theory, McDonald's is gourmet cuisine.
- sickrubik, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7That would be for starbucks card holders.
"he company also announced that more than 12 million "qualifying AT&T broadband and AT&T U-verse Internet customers" would get unlimited free WiFi at Starbucks." - dibby1, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7i love downloading torrents over a nice latte..
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7Write your own webpages? You mean you DON'T? Turn in your geek card now please.
- TheAstronomer, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8This isn't your ***** hello kitty forum, no need for pointless comments like that.
- TypeEE, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8free wifi is so popular anywhere else but big cooperates, they make a big deal out of it.
- centran, on 02/11/2008, -2/+8Um... this is NOT free. From the article.
"Non-cardholding customers can pay $3.99 for two hours -- which, of course, will incent customers to get the debit card. Monthly membership will cost $19.99 per month"
If you are a qualifying AT&T broadband customer then you can get it for free but then you are already paying AT&T so it's not truly free just a little bonus for being their customer. - Anfidurl, on 02/11/2008, -4/+10Shame they picked AT&T. Now all your WiFi will be spie +++ATH NO CARRIER
- GeauxLSU, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6It is free for AT&T DSL customers who get 1.5 Mbps or greater...
January 23, 2008
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced that more than 10 million AT&T broadband subscribers will soon have free unlimited access to the company’s nationwide Wi-Fi network, the largest Wi-Fi network in the United States.
"The free Wi-Fi offer will be available to new and existing customers who subscribe to any of AT&T’s broadband services with downstream speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps, 3.0 Mbps, or 6.0 Mbps. Free Wi-Fi access was initially provided to the company’s higher-speed broadband customers last year."

- dcmusicfusion, on 02/11/2008, -5/+11Can't wait till this rolls out across the nation. Also looking for the $1 a cup price to make it out of Beta and of Seatte.
- MixMastaKooz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Is there no independent coffee shops near you? Many local independent stores will give you refills if you bring in your own travel mug for about $1...plus you're producing less waste. The shop near me, Riley's Coffee in Belleville, IL (google it because they ship their coffee, too) roasts their own beans in small manageable quantities. I get my coffee there for $1 when I bring in my mug, and it's way superior to Starbucks...
- returnofajedi, on 02/11/2008, -3/+8how many of us actually own a Starbucks debit card??? This headline should read: Starbucks Drops T-Mobile, Still to Charge Regular Customers.
- wtmoose, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6According to the article, Starbucks card-holders get two free hours per day. Not bad compared to the old deal.
- wingo123, on 02/11/2008, -3/+8Didn't Starbucks use to do this in the beginning? I swear I would get it for free there, then all of the sudden when I asked about it they would hand me this T-Mobil brochure and shrug.
Starbucks sucks anyway. I stopped going a while ago. - tsunamisteve, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6and ethiopian coffee farmers are still starving because they get a grossly unfair price for their coffee. so places like starbucks can increase profits. im not trying to be all "fight the man"--this is a serious problem.
