- Kanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they should make it a mandatory Holiday :P
- zahngol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or you could go with the more traditional method of making your employees wait until evening (heaven forbid) and dock pay or subtract sick leave days... but then I assume that would be too logical... (yes I know, my light saber is red and I don't care)
- MrPaulAR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We just take our employees in shifts :)
- tommytrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love that idea! That rocks!
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the biggest bunch of BS I've ever seen. How can they even come up with a number like that? Fact is, they can't. They made it up...pulled it out of their asses. This is PR, pure and simple. Do they honestly think people are just going to call in sick to see a movie? Enough people that it will cost the businesses in the New York area millions? Come on. Can't you people smell ***** anymore?
From the article: "The findings are based on the assumption..." which should tip you off right there, not to mention the fact that it's written in the New York Post. The Post is one step away from "Weekly World News". - Ethan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a professor, and when AOTC came out, my classes were like a freakin' wasteland. So, this year, I'm just going to make it a field trip and anyone who wants to go see it can go as a group. Besides, given the fact that I'm teaching my Social History of Videogames class, seeing the movie kind of fits into some lectures later in the semester.
- WBSpring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Our group has a movie day once every two months or so (software developers - it depends if there are good movies to see.
We work more than 40 hours a week anyway, so no lost productivity and our bosses don't mind. If something important comes up, we bag the movie and see it another day. - Kilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually agree with ksgant, it's really impossible to come up with those figures. The formula they used to calculate that is inaccurate at best.
And yes, the Post is barely a notch above Weekly World News - tratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ksgant: In my office alone, there are five guys taking the day off to go see it (small office, that's 1/4 total office population). One of them is our boss, too. And just like Ethan said, this happened last time there was a new Star Wars, too.
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why would it cost them, they're gonna take it as sick day or vacation day which is already built in to the system.
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its total ***** - no one is losing money on anything. think about it, you get X amount of days of paid/unpaid sick leave/vacation every year to do with as you please, the employer has already calculated this. by having a large coincidence of these days occuring at once instead being scattered throughout the year, no one loses money, people just freak the ***** out. its total *****.
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this movie was only going to be played one time, at noon May 19 around the world, then yeah...I could see people leaving work or not coming in to see "the event"...but come on, if you're unresponsible enough to leave work to see something that you can see later that night, or the next day, then perhaps you need to rethink your careers.
And as someone else said, if you're taking vacation or a sick day to see this, then where is any business losing money? This IS built into the financial system.
It's just creating hype where hype doesn't need any creation. Boss won't let you off work? Is that the end of the world? See it that night.
Come on... - wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares, it's Star Wars, and it's the last one, what'd you expect from a gigantic pop icon?
- fred0204, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0even if the numbers wrong, fact is a lot of people will be skipping work or making excuses to see it. I used to work in tech support and all the guys I know there are having a 'vendor meet' which just happens to be at the nearest theatre playing Star Wars. I hate to generalise, but the IT departments of the nation will be deserted on the release day. High school and college classes will be spotty. replace the specific number with something like "a lot of dollars" or "big skrillah" if you don't like the estimate.
- riot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When the first one came out my math professor took the day off. We caught him in a lie the next day. He told us he had to take his girl friend to the hospital. Then the following week he had to take her for her again at that point he told us he saw the film and that is one person at $150.00 CA at day so I could believe it. so at that rate about 420,000 people would have to take a sick day but that is believeable for sure
- Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People are funny... I agree that technically a loss in productivity would be present, but to try to put a number on it is asinine. There are way too many variables, and possible outcomes.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Put me on the list of people who find numbers like this to be complete *****. What makes them think that these people would be "productive" while at work anyway??? All they do when they ARE at work is surf digg.com anyway! There's NO lost productivity outside of the norm here people....
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it's simple enough, Fire them. I'm sure there are those out there that would rather do an interview than watch another bad movie.
- ballistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If so many people leave work to go see it:
a) the money lost there will be gained by the movie theaters and Lucas
b) the loss of productivity will be distributed more or less evenly and less work will have to be done since there is less demand because those people are going to see Star Wars...see point A - tommytrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW this really stirred the pot a bit. I love it.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about the increased productivity of all the poeple who are not planning to see it? They get a day to concentrate on work for a full day
without Star Wars fans. - thirteen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should do what a former employer did, buy the theater, make everyone go in the morning and get back to work....we even had free popcorn and soda. (It'll cost less in the long run)
