- Barbas06, on 06/29/2009, -0/+65Well that is something that should have been done ages ago...
- mithrasinvictus, on 06/30/2009, -4/+44Where are the people accusing the EU of bullying manufacturers and meddling in something that the free market will solve?
- warp99, on 06/29/2009, -2/+35I will not buy a new phone without a USB mini-plug for charging. It's way too convenient.
- Pooley, on 06/30/2009, -2/+27"This should have come from the US where the number of gadgets people own is much higher than in EU".
What a pile of utter horse cack. Europe are much earlier adapters of gadgets - particularly cell / mobile phones and their technologies.
We were texting each other like there was no tomorrow literally *years* before you lot had practically sent your first SMS so don't spout such drivel. - avalanche123, on 06/29/2009, -0/+24I'm glad its finally happening
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -8/+30The free market provides you with choice! Customers demand a thousand different charging standards!!!
***** THE EU!!! FREE MARKETS 4 EVA!!!
NOW WHERES MY GOVERNMENT BAILOUT!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?? - borez, on 06/30/2009, -3/+23You sir, win the elitist comment of the day award.
- DiscoUnderpants, on 06/30/2009, -0/+20There is a provision for this in the USB standard. There are (in USB 3.0 and I think 2.0) two types of power loads for devices... high power and low power. USB 3.0 I believe can provide a 5v and roughly 1amp(I think is 0.9amps) load for high(I think its still 100mA for low) . That is about the same as you are going to get out of a typical wall charger.
- DiscoUnderpants, on 06/30/2009, -2/+21Im honestly curious, on what do you base the assertion that EU people own less gadgets than US? If anything I find EU people a lot more early adopters of gadgets... but that's just anecdotal. I could never understand why Americans continued on using pagers long after texting had become common also.
- dazparkour, on 06/30/2009, -1/+17I prefer spending twice as much on proprietary cables for my iPod for no discernible benefit other than I can say Apple made it! Digg this guy up.
- tnoy, on 06/30/2009, -1/+13So, Apple should not go with the decision to charge via USB, because they already charge via USB?
Great idea! - elperegrino, on 06/30/2009, -0/+11in future you'll have fewer chargers and therefore lose them all quicker...
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9By everyone, you mean you, of course.
- seinman, on 06/30/2009, -1/+9What happens when a device comes along that requires more power to charge than USB can deliver? It already takes twice as long for me to charge my phone via USB cable than it does with the proprietary wall charger.
- theodenking, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9The ignorance, it burns!
- molotovcat, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9Your ignorance is shocking.
- SyuRi, on 06/30/2009, -3/+9If the charger is the same for everyone, you bet there will be more people sharing their chargers. Besides making less quantities of different chargers costs more (energy and money) than making a larger quantity of the same. Same means of production, more efficient, shared between companies.
- iDVD, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6That's true in the short term, but I believe this plan has the future in mind.
- Animan351, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7Not already having this is why I only buy phones and mp3 players that use standard usb mini connections. Might take greedy assed america a long time before they agree to this.
- 2of8, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6What? No! I only care about today!
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Yes, but it will be so much more efficient that way. Who wants to lose all that time in not finding multiple chargers
- dazparkour, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Those cables NEVER break - they are made by Apple for God sake!
That's why shops don't sell them! They couldn't sell them because everyone gets one free and there is not a person on earth who would lose a cable that Apple made! - robbob, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4This should always been the fact, at least between different models of the same company.
Nokia generally seemed to be good about it, but other companies just wanted to screw you for their accessories on top of the phone price. - Crimsonsoul343, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6Won't this significantly lower the prices on chargers? Will probably suck for companies who's main focus is cell phone peripherals. Why buy a new charger when you can just use your old ones and borrow one from a friend. I'm sure lobbyist in the US are already trying to stop this from happening here.
- KingFog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Yeah, and become America's plaything... No thanks...
Leaving the EU would do horrible damage to our country... - thomas040, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6I feel like writing some sarcastic comment about how that form of government regulation, and control should never hit the US. Because it's socialism, and it's bad. Right? ;)
- nvrau, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Or any other mobile device...
- stong98, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I assume that you mean micro-USB since that is what the standard is based on. Even though they are both a smaller version of a USB plug, there is a significant difference.
- azra3l, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3was that even english?
- BalancingAct, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5About time too!
- askantik, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Might? I'll bet money that it'll never happen here.
- seclife321, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Make it the same standard for bluetooth headsets too.
- nroose, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I blame that "Rock Star" at HP for making USB NOT support the accessories from the device. It seems like if we want to standardize on USB, we should extend it to support accessories from the device. Then we can have standard chargers AND standard accessories. Now THAT would be great.
- NjoysMacs, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Very interesting to see that it calls for not only a USB end to charge, but a mini USB port on the device itself. Could this mean the end of the standard ipod/iphone 32 pin dock connector?
- Boofster, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1About freakin time!
- DiscoUnderpants, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1@JudgeMonkey
I disagree but for a different reason. Standards such as these should be decided thru organisations such as ISO or IEEE which have a great amount of company and government involvement. Once a standard is agreed upon(and this can be a painstaking process) then the standard should be enforced thru the usual government back agencies for such things. Otherwise you would end up with 100 different standards(all closed of course) for power sockets, TV transmission(I personally think that ISO should be involved with video streaming standards about now... they are patent encumbered and are now holding back the industry... not contributing to it) and comminications systems.
Imagine a world where you had to have your electrical fittings so you could use only a certin brnad of kitchen appliance.
This arena is no place for the free market... there is little or no chance for innovation(who really gives a crap what shape your wall socket is) and great scope for abuse. - theblacknight, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Firewire maybe. It allows for something like 27VDC, though I think 14VDC is the most currently available for output on laptops.
- askantik, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3Hell, if we continued our glorious free market for another 20 years, there'd probably be like 1,000,000 different plugs. As of now, we only have a couple hundred thousand. Think of all the chargers we could have!
MORE IS BETTER, RETARDS!!!
/s, of course. - MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1The only way that would fly would be if Apple released the specs for the Dock connector without requiring a license. As it's one of the benefits for iPod/iPhone users I doubt Apple would do that.
- inactive, on 08/13/2009, -0/+1fair point....even though we are already america's plaything *shiver*
- Junkyarddawg, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1About goddamn time!
- mbingham24, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0Commnsense has finally prevailed Well done guys
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0Quite great to hear.
- JudgeMonkey, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1The Government shouldn't be able to FORCE a standard, but the companies coming together in agreement on a standard is possible and should happen.
I don't see it happening though. It's not enough for motorola that I use a mini-usb charger, it HAS to be motorola brand or the phone tells me to go screw myself. - djamp42, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0RIP FIREWIRE
- gabrielgonzalez, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1Yeah it sure does. Too bad you didnt read the article. Well, ignorance can be cured. Just learn to read and it will all go away.
