- blackinthmiddle, on 08/15/2009, -1/+63I've been an AT&T customer for 15 years, but because of their latest pricing changes (which basically makes it impossible constructively use rollover minutes), I'm looking to leave them. My wife doesn't have a contract with them and mine ends next year. AT&T has screwed customers over simply because they have the Jesus phone.
"No MMS? - Yeah, we offer it with our other phones but you suckers keep paying for not having it."
"No 450 minute family plan anymore? - Yeah, see if we still offered that then you could drop down to that plan, save $20-$30 a month and use your rollover minutes to cover the overage.
"The iPhone supports higher data speeds but our network is still behind the times? - Don't be silly! We're not going to actually update our network until we have to!" - inactive, on 08/15/2009, -0/+39Goddammit. I wish I hadn't left Sprint. Frigging AT&T tempted me with their iPhone and every day I wish I hadn't been suckered. AT&T eats all the dicks - they're just ***** unbelievable incompetent *****. Worst of the 4 major carriers by a LONG shot.
- Nintendesert, on 08/15/2009, -3/+40Because it's going to fall into the ocean.
- cbulock, on 08/15/2009, -0/+32The article doesn't even mention the 17 cities it's being added to. The news article it links to is more informative.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5 ... - socomoddjob, on 08/15/2009, -1/+31My att contract ends in december, i wont be back.
- crazzy88ss, on 08/15/2009, -0/+20I'll be switching to sprint when my ATT contract ends.
*shrug* - belthesar, on 08/15/2009, -0/+20No, you need a carrier that doesn't suck.
- eagles7977, on 08/15/2009, -5/+23We need 4G in Toronto because 3G is garbage
- niradg, on 08/15/2009, -0/+15wtf. how is Los Angeles not on this list?
- inactive, on 08/15/2009, -0/+14Sprint really made a good turn around in the last year. Not much reason to NOT go to sprint. I have noticed that everyone that doesn't like sprint are the one's that got screwed over when they where complete shat. Although didn't they get like a JD power for best customer satisfaction last year or some BS (might be wrong on that one...cant remember).
-$7 a month Total equipment protection insurance.
-The fastest 3g speeds of any network with 3x the coverage of AT&T and only behind Verizon.
-Although it has a little less 3g coverage then Verizon, you get cheaper plans then both AT&T and Verizon as well as a 4g network sooner and non handicapped phone's like on Verizon.
-Sprint Nav and Voice services are also free on sprint. - meghalc, on 08/15/2009, -0/+11My Tmobile contract expires soon and the recent price hike for 3g data is on the level with ATT...I think I am going to have to jump to Sprint for faster speed but same money.
- crocodial, on 08/15/2009, -0/+11I've been a Sprint customer for going on 10 years. When I was looking for my first cell phone in 2000, they offered the best deal for the most minutes. Over the years, I have been tempted to drop them many times. Why? Because their phones weren't the coolest ones out there. But I stayed a customer. Why? Because they have treated me wonderfully and because they still offer the best deals out there. Last Christmas I got an iPhone as a gift (an activation card). I am a huge Apple fan and my contract with Sprint was up. I very nearly switched, but I didn't. Why? Because it would have tripled my monthly bill to get the minimum iPhone plan.
Sprint critics complain about:
Customer Service: Every now and then you get someone who can't really help you. So call back. 9 times out of 10 the CS person is very helpful and, for me, is very nice.
Lack of Cool Phones: This has been a big one for me. But I think they have made some big strides here.
Quality of Service: Over the years, my Sprint phones have usually had service when other people on other networks do not. There are a few regular spots I know of that I will lose service on when I pass through, but other than that, I rarely have a dropped call. In call, it couldn't be any clearer than if I was on a landline.
I've never had a Verizon phone, but I've had 3 AT&T phones for work, and in terms of call quality and dropped calls, they all sucked compared to my Sprint phones. I hated using them. Personally, I am rooting for Sprint and will likely remain a customer for a long time. - Twee, on 08/15/2009, -2/+11But does Sprint's WiMax service have a retarded 5GB bandwidth cap like every wireless carrier's 3G data plans, or is it unlimited data?
- dgath, on 08/15/2009, -1/+10Because blanketing a metro area the size of LA could possibly be the biggest challenge of the rollout process.
- DrCraigis, on 08/15/2009, -0/+8The Sprint “Baltimore Plan” (since Sprint 4G is only available in Tiny Town at the moment) is $79.99 for unlimited 4G@2-4Mbps down and a 5Gb cap for 3G roaming. Pretty steep for 4Mbps but at least it’s unlimited. I’m seriously considering it, if only to say FU to the cable/DSL providers. Besides, I’m one of the few people who actually like my Sprint service.
- DarkShroud, on 08/15/2009, -0/+8A lot of people, especially with the Pre.
- mbraynard, on 08/15/2009, -0/+7The article didn't mention the reason I read it: how fast, exactly, is the Sprint WiMAX/4G going to be?
- deaftly, on 08/15/2009, -1/+8Just got rid of att/iphone last week and I couldn't be happier
- Macintoshreader, on 08/15/2009, -0/+7If you want to go back to Sprint, then get the Palm Pre, I guess. It's a great device...
- cowsgonemadd3, on 08/15/2009, -0/+6I get it but I am hoping to put on 4-5 people on a family plan.
Yeah cell phones are expensive. Now days you cant get a PDA phone hardly without being FORCED to get data which costs 30 bucks a month EXTRA PER PHONE. - inactive, on 08/15/2009, -8/+14People in LA are too busy smelling their own farts to use the internet.
- meghalc, on 08/15/2009, -0/+6Thats what we used to say about EDGE until 3g came along...
- brianbb98, on 08/15/2009, -1/+6And we still dont have 3G where I live. And no its not in ***** nowhere...
- blackinthmiddle, on 08/15/2009, -1/+6Now, the lowest plan AT&T has is the 700 minute plan. They used to have 450 as well as 850 minute family plans. I have the 850 minute family plan. However, between me and my wife, we only use about 550 minutes a month. Long story short, we've built up over 4,000 minutes. A great feeling knowing you're covered for overages. A bad feeling knowing you're being offered a service you'll never get to cash in on. I'd have to call someone and just leave them on hold for three days or so to actually use my rollover minutes.
So when I called AT&T and asked to be downgraded to the 450 minute plan, the lady was about to do it until she says, "Oh, look at that? Looks like they don't offer the 450 minute plan anymore. In fact, they don't even offer the 850 minute plan anymore. They start with the 700 minute plan...which costs the same as your grandfathered in 850 minute plan!"
Bottom line, they realized there was a loophole. Downgrade your plan, use your rollover minutes to cover the overage and save $20-$30 bucks a month for a year (which is the longest you can bank your rollover minutes). There is simply no way to use those rollover minutes because of this closure. - crocodial, on 08/15/2009, -0/+5i do.
- dgath, on 08/15/2009, -1/+513Mbps
http://gizmodo.com/5174718/exclusive-wimax-uncappe ... - cowsgonemadd3, on 08/15/2009, -0/+4I thought a family plan with 700 minutes would be minimum? No rollover here(talking about Verizon).
- DRT23, on 08/15/2009, -1/+5Can't wait for HTC Hero in October!
- lemur, on 08/15/2009, -0/+4My experience is the same as yours. Sometimes it sucks not having the latest flashiest phones, but I do believe I'm getting better service with Sprint, and I've been completely satisfied by that.
From what I've heard, Sprint is extremely particular about ensuring the quality of phones they employ. Sprint was one of the very first companies to back the development of Google Android, but while hopes were high that Sprint would carry an early Android model, they instead announced that they felt the system wasn't mature/usable/stable enough for deployment. Apparently they don't mess around, and they pay attention to things like return rates on phones. - poonaka, on 08/16/2009, -0/+4Forget Toronto! We need it in Ottawa.
- Brooks007, on 08/15/2009, -0/+4Get the Palm Pre and save yourself a ton of money each month over the iphone and my coverage and internet speed are always good. I save like $60 dollars a month.
I love the phone too. - mbraynard, on 08/15/2009, -0/+4How is latency?

http://newsreleases.sprint.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=127 ... - Jook, on 08/15/2009, -1/+4I have had Wimax for a year now...I get 6Mbps down and 512Kbps upstream for $40 a month. Is mostly reliable and fast, but does have issues. We had a 30 hour outage 4 weeks ago and after that my connection became cranky...would work fine for a while, then ping at 3000, 20%+ packet loss, etc. Had a tech out and he determined that at times I was connecting to a tower 1 mile away instead of the one 1800 feet away. At this point they have no way to associate my modem with a specific tower and basically told me to suffer. I rely on my internet connection for VPN and IP Phone access for my home office, so I may be switching.
- idc5, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3I wonder how much price gouging will occur among the oligopoly.
- MedicSean37, on 08/16/2009, -0/+3unless they fix the crappy ass service, i will be ditching my iphone/att service as soon as the contract runs out.
- toben7l, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3Sprint's 3G data service (for wifi cards, not for the phones themselves) has a 5gb cap, don't see why the 4G service won't. Sprint - More Money, For Less! Unless you hack your phone and tether it to your laptop, using your unlimited phone data plan as a decent wifi connection.........
- lazy6pyro, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3I think I may do the same.
- Nickbc87, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3I've generally had the same experience. My only gripe is the lack of cool phones, which, considering all else is really a non-issue for me. Last November my contract expired and I threatened to leave for T-mobile, and they offered to give me free internet for a year, which I can just tether to my laptop. Customer service is generally top notch, 9/10 times. I'm staying, unless people flock to them and they start suffering in the Customer Service area.
- Ryan32, on 08/15/2009, -0/+3I'd say the Pre is probably the most desirable phone on the market behind the iphone....
Thats a pretty good start. Also, sprint is following up with a bunch of HTC phones running Android in the coming months. - tacojohn48, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2Somebody missed the troll.
- tacojohn48, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2There are some great things in the LA area. Check out the dream center.
- Zaxcomp, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2All 3G data card providers have 5 gb caps in america.
- inactive, on 08/16/2009, -1/+3Palm Pre + Sprint > iPhone + AT&T
- lemur, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2In defense of Sprint getting cool phones, they did get the Palm Pre exclusively. I think anyone who has even a passing interest in smartphones has literally waited years for Palm to update their software.
Right now I have a Blackberry Curve, and that's cool enough for me. :) Also rumor has it that Sprint will roll out a Samsung-made Android phone. Personally I'm a big fan of Samsung. - carlosos, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2Maybe you can add a directional antenna and point it to the tower you want to use.
- Jook, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2Usually below 100...I game on it.
- Sid0101, on 08/15/2009, -1/+3actually, it has to be something else.
New York is a larger city than LA and its rolling out there.
It's either because of funds, bureaucracy, politics, or ineptness... i might be missing a few.
Regardless, its not worth switching to Sprint unless I can use a Sim card. - firesights, on 08/15/2009, -1/+3:-o You said a naughty word!
- blackinthmiddle, on 08/16/2009, -0/+2I'm seriously considering going in that direction. The only thing is, I cover a lot of ground within the course of a week. I live in Westchester, but work in NYC. I'm also in Connecticut at least once a week if not more. If it's one thing I know for certain, there's simply no provider out there that provides great coverage everywhere. Each has their deadzones. For the most part AT&T is pretty good in terms of coverage. Verizon, for example, is pretty bad in upper Westchester.
With that said, if AT&T doesn't change their pricing structure and they still don't provide basics things like MMS by next year, I'm gone. I'll probably go with Sprint/Palm Pre. -
