- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Isn't people only getting the news that's "just right for them" one of the major problems we have now in the world? News outlets like Fox News, Air America, Right-Wing Radio, Al Jazeera, etc... Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea? If the truth is supposed to hurt sometimes, then if your news is what you want to hear, you're missing out on a lot of the truth right?
- Proginoskes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This reminds me of Zaphod Beeblebrox's sunglasses. If he was about to see anything particularly disturbing or frightening, they would automatically become opaque, isolating him from the horror. Unfortunately, this did nothing to prevent events from actually happening.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Did you actually try the service, or did you just react to the word Israeli?
- tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10And we will bury your comment.
BTW, do you know how we call people like you that the word Israel trigger them with such emotions?
Nazis!.
And we sick of you people, Digg is a Tech site so keep your stupid political comments to your self!. - yoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is just plain dumb.
You won't use a technology created by Israeli, just because they are Israeli. Furthermore you make assumptions on the nature of their program and their political views, just due to the fact that they live in a certain country. I'm sorry I have to be to the one to tell you this: you are racist my friend.
I prefer not to reply to the "political" caprice part of your comment as its highly irrelevant. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Really? Could you perhaps elaborate a little on that from your privileged position.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Right. Cus people are going to click and read a story they're not interested? Perhaps we should do away with the whole interactive aspect and present the whole site as a streaming flash movie so that the users can be properly shocked with no way to stop it. Oh -- they'd just go somewhere else. Hmmm... maybe some kind of restraint chair with something to prop open their eyelids?
Why do people think that focus = censorship? It learns which articles YOU are likely to be interested in and presents them first. Oh noes. Teh end of teh wurld!?!#!@1211
It's taking Amazon or Google personalization approach and applying it to a news site. Cool! - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People keep saying Digg is a tech site. And that's how Mr Kevin started it. But I think Digg has moved on. Can't it be termed a General News site. 'Cause that' what is now anyway.
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some news shouldn't be filtered, but some should. There is 'headline' news that should appeal to everyone, but please filter the 'life and arts' section for me.
- akinbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This really is a great service. I don't even really feel it's description does it much justice. Look past the mindset: "It thinks it can give me custom news...been there, done that."
It's a great resource for browsing news...the custom news content for the home page is just one element of the whole thing. You're going to find a lot of news via this site. I've never seen another service make such extensive use of RSS. - nbuet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am not sure I want personalized stories. I want to spy on what's the buzz, not seeing my cubicle.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or you can use it to filter out the stupid celebrity gossip and fluff and go straight to the topics that interest you. Kind of like what you are doing now on this very site.
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Look at the screenshot lol. Apparently, 9441 women from 13 countries asked the question 'What do you think about the vagina?' And here I was thinking only men would be asking such things haha.
- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@DonaINY: For all of Digg's awesomeness, it doesn't yet allow front page filtering. And I appreciate that. Sure, there are many headlines I read and think "boring." But often times I'll see a catchy blurb about a topic that doesn't normally interest me and end up reading the entire linked article. It's good to have constant exposure to things that might not always be your "cup of tea." It keeps the mind fresh and safe from rot.
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Although, it still seems kind of buggy what is the eBay Jet Fighter story doing under Women's category? I was trying to figure out how to report the story as being under the wrong category.
I like the site but I just don't see it replacing my obsession with digg. - yoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Zionist entity"???
Read carefully now: This post, has absolutely NOTHING to do with Israel or politics. No matter how desperately you try to relate the subjects. There are many ways to promote your ideas, replying to this post is not one of them. - thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5>the news that’s just right for them.
Does anyone else think that's not a good idea? I'm starting to think that the benifit of old fashioned news (aka papers) is that on occasion you run into stories that don't conform to your belief. With these systems you only see news you already agree with.

http://prube.com Like digg, but with less point! (but now with cash prizes) - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do love the color of their top navigation bar. It really reminds me of another site, I just can't put remember which site that was which I am posting at right now.
Also that is a retarded trademark name they have. Rate to Personalize.. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3he gets me in to trouble, but it's a love/hate relationship.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No thanks.
Filtering and censoring is not the way to go when it comes to news,
providing it really is news and not manufactured propaganda. - Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"With Spotback, you'll never have to be exposed to anything that doesn't conform to your own belief system! Here at Spotback - or "The Spot" as the kids call it - you can live in your own personal bubble, isolated from anything that challenges or disrupts your worldview.
Spotback: Sending news Back to a Spot in time when it sucked!" - kjmatthews7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Isn't people only getting the news that's "just right for them" one of the major problems we have now in the world?"
I think one of the other major problems in the world - or at least in the US - is the enormous group of people who don't get *any* news at all, either because it's "too depressing" or because they find it "irrelevant," etc. This type of service could do a lot to combat that if it became mainstream.
It will be interesting to see if responsible use - that is, clicking on stories you might not be actively interested in but that seem important - leads to a more "fair and balanced" perspective on world events than can be found in mainstream media sources. - gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've been working on something very similar - i'm gutted but won't give up
- charlesfrith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It might be useful for this service to declare it's news neutrality. A good product is a good product and should have the chance for an honest assessment. However my searches of the site and the company makes no attempt to declare it's neutrality or a pluralist approach to employing Israeli Arabs or Palestinians. This should allay any fears of bias that potential users may have.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Migdilio@ Yeah, I agree. It takes 2 seconds to skip over a headline I'm not interested in. That's worth it considering all the interesting stuff I could miss.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This service is just gathering all the rss feeds from around the world and lets you decide which ones you want to read. No one is censoring you or deciding what you're gonna read, on the contrary.
Enough with the Israel bashing, there's really no place for it on digg. - darkecho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Personally I think all these new news sites are starting because they have seen the success of digg. The one thing that needs to be for these sites is something new to bring out and attract people. Digg allowing more of a democratic type thing for which articles show and which do not, in my opinion put it over slashdot, as well as design. The digg design looks so much nicer. So, 2 things should help there sites. 1 - Something new to bring to the table. What makes your site "better" than digg or slashdot. and 2 - A nice clean look , not overcrowded will help a lot especially when your user base is starting to build.
- johnwsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0News sites are great. Too many options and too much personalization is bad. Keep it simple (stupid).
- Batnun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seems promising...
- jabelar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The dangers are there, but ...
On the other hand seeing Tom Cruise baby news in the top headlines is ridiculous too.
I don't think this really will filter viewpoints, but rather categories of news. But perhaps it would get sophisticated enough to determine further subtleties. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4So Diggers.... What do you think of your penis?
- roadmr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sounds a lot like http://findory.com/ which has been around for quite a while. It too learns from your preferences based on which stories you click on. It then builds a profile and personalizes the front page accordingly.
- JLMarais, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It rocks. Digg killer? Probably not, Digg for what's popular on for everyone, Spotback for what's popular for you.
- akinbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What are you smoking? You're hardly here, at digg seeking out the news that is right for you, are you? On the contrary, at spotback you do seek out the news that is right for you...that's the point.
If you're honestly insulted by this service, then you are some kinda crackhead. Don't use it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its not censoring and filtering a valuable tool when used properly.
What Julia Roberts had for lunch is technically news. Don't you think you'd rather filter this out for something a little more vital?
And we are both writing propoganda, so that argument doesn't hold too much water. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Do you take such a strong stance on protesting Syrian, Jordanian, Saudi etc etc goods also? Because they have and still are doing some awful things to the Palestinians for a few centuries now. Or do you just stand against Israel? Is it acceptable to kill Palestinians as long as you refer to God as Allah instead of Yaweh?
See, now you went and got me into the politics of it all.
Anyway, I'm not really sure I want to digg this. I want to see it actually go live and thrive for a while. We've been seeing a lot of things like this and will see a great many more. I'll save my interest for the ones that bear fruit. - JLMarais, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Use in combination right? As I mentioned - the one for the general news highlights and the other for updates on whatever you want to keep an eye on e.g. the release of the next HalfLife episode :-)
Cheers. - akinbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Perhaps Web20 sites have been keeping it too simple? I love digg, but there are thousands of great stories that I simply don't find here.
With spotback, you decide what you wanna see, what you wanna read. It goes back to the way things "used to be" (although, of course, most sites are still this way), but adds a Web20 twist, gives it some of those prized features that we all love about 2.0 apps. - greg121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0looks like these guys are trying to do the same thing but for the digital media audience: http://www.ustudio.com
looks like its still in beta though - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3What's with all the hate? It's not like anyone's siding with Microsoft or Apple here...
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2yet another marketing digg
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Read a little more carefully. 9441 women WERE asked the question.
Still it's kind of a funny question to ask so many women. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2So, you are denying that there was fighting amongst Arab nations prior to 1948? Are you denying that the Palestinians were persecuted by all the other nations in the region before during and after the British mandate? You don't find it odd how all the "Palestinian freedom fighter" groups seem to be headed by people from other Muslim nations and the ones sending the Palestinians in the fire? You see no problem with how all of the support from the Arab world could be in the form of currency, lawyers, doctors and engineers to help the Palestinians fight legally for their rights and build better lives, but is instead sent in the form of suicide bombs?
- sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How about if I rely on my own ability to seek out the news that is right for me? I don't want some guy in Israel gathering personal information about me just so that he can target "news" at me. How lazy is that?
Thank you Spotback for calling us too ignorant to know what news is best for us.
No digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5delete this
- Filoviridae, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Pretty much everywhere in the US is afflicted by that. It's a very self centered view of the world. News from other parts of the world is very scarce and downplayed here.
- dark1152, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Brilliant
- Progranism, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Something similar:

In early development, but you can still use it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1double post
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I had the pleasure of getting on their Beta, and it's truly a great service.

What is Digg?
