- tonicboy, on 11/29/2007, -57/+24This is a joke, right? You meant to post this in "Offbeat News", right? You did realize that the article was satirical in nature, right? I'm a little disappointed, MrBabyMan. Normally your submissions are so good.
- MrBabyMan, on 11/29/2007, -6/+94If you read the article, it talks about how to avoid being scammed by these services and where the same information can be found for free. Pretty helpful post, actually.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 11/29/2007, -19/+4mr baby man, write an article about yourself and submit it. It'll get dugg, we want to know!!

- duckyinc, on 11/29/2007, -10/+4Hmm I think we should publish their websites contents so everybody sees what they are charging for.
- JayD16, on 11/29/2007, -5/+19We could release a torrent of it! Oh bitter irony...
- eridius, on 11/29/2007, -2/+20That's not irony.
- stepnet, on 11/29/2007, -1/+1It would only be irony if the first thing you downloaded after paying for their guide, was their guide.
- stonedslacker, on 11/29/2007, -1/+1Torrent or the guide doesn't exist.

- DaBake, on 11/29/2007, -15/+13So wait...where do I buy this software?
- iCallShotgun, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13Dude you should so do it. It's nauseatingly appealing and unbelievably cheap!!
- waspbr, on 11/29/2007, -5/+0Doesn't anyone think this is a scam?
- rstarr, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Of course, I can spot a scam a mile away.
Now excuse me while I wire some collateral money to the Spanish National Lottery.
- rstarr, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Of course, I can spot a scam a mile away.
- Shirly, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13Nah, I'll just wait for the torrent.
- Chirp08, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1There is no irony in this, none at all...

Players: [chanting in unison] We are all very good players.
Hypnotist: You will beat Shelbyville.
Players: [chanting in unison] We will beat Shelbyville.
Hypnotist: You will give one hundred and ten percent.
Players: [chanting in unison] That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition, that is the most anyone can give.- richardiscool, on 11/29/2007, -5/+20You can increase something by any percentage you want, though.
- p3ngwin, on 11/29/2007, -4/+7but YOU have only a potential maxed at 100%. YOU can't do more than that.
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -5/+4You can't measure increases by using percents. They weren't designed for that. Say you go from 5kB/s to 30KB/s. That's 500% increase. But 5kB/s of 30kB/s means that 5kB/s is 20% of the effeciency of 30kB/s. Which means the remaining speed difference is actually 80%. Therefore 30kB/s is 80% *more* efficient than 5kB/s. It's confusing isn't it? That's because the scale is broken. percent doesn't mean anything with uncapped increases.
- sholt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9Wrong. You can only calculate efficiency when you know what the upper limit is, and a percentage only represents a ratio of some number over 100. Like any ratio, it can be an improper fraction with a value greater than 1.
If the upper limit for the bandwidth in your example is, say, 100 kB/s; then a 5kB/s effective throughput would have 5/100 * 100%, or 5% efficiency. Likewise, 30 kB/s would have a 30% efficiency. This makes your 30kB/s throughput 30/5 = 6 times more efficient than 5kB/s, which is equivalent to saying 30kB/s has 600% of the efficiency of 5kB/s, or a 500% increase in efficiency (5kB/s + 5x5kB/s) within the same system.
It all makes perfect sense.
- sholt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9Wrong. You can only calculate efficiency when you know what the upper limit is, and a percentage only represents a ratio of some number over 100. Like any ratio, it can be an improper fraction with a value greater than 1.
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -11/+1I technically think that 101% is equal to infinity. You can never reach the value since your capped at 100%. What 101% really means is that you have your measuring a value on the wrong scale, like last months revenues or something. It's like the probability of something being 1.1 when 1 means it's guarenteed.
That's just my opinion though.- Ebeniz, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5say your current speed is 5 kB/s and using these tips you get 30 kB/s that's 500% speed increase.
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -4/+3Your using percentages to measure a difference between two distinct values. A percent is designed to measure something on a scale of 0 to 100. Your not doing that. That's why you get 500, because your not using it correctly. It's a marketting technique to hype up something by saying "500%" which sounds more than "5 times". It doesn't matter but I'm just not a fan
- sholt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4A 500% increase is actually 6x greater. You increase your initial value by 5x itself, or N+5N, which is equivalent to saying 6N.
It's not marketing, it *is* more than 5x.
- sholt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4A 500% increase is actually 6x greater. You increase your initial value by 5x itself, or N+5N, which is equivalent to saying 6N.

Personally, I get about 400k rods to the hogshead
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -4/+3Your using percentages to measure a difference between two distinct values. A percent is designed to measure something on a scale of 0 to 100. Your not doing that. - celtickuja, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6Percentages and infinity are completely different concepts. Also, don't try to teach things like that if you don't know your from you're.
Also, I hate this comment system -_- - sholt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4 A percentage is simply a ratio of x/100. x can be any number, and the ratio can be an improper fraction greater than 1.
You're entitled to your opinion, but your math is wrong.
- Ebeniz, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5say your current speed is 5 kB/s and using these tips you get 30 kB/s that's 500% speed increase.

- richardiscool, on 11/29/2007, -5/+20You can increase something by any percentage you want, though.

- AppleGeorge, on 11/29/2007, -1/+40You can't. This article is a joke.
- 15thPD, on 11/29/2007, -5/+4Very easily. Call up your ISP and order a higher tier speed package.
- Acidictadpole, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6By paying this guy for your free stuff.. geez learn to read!
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1more compression?
- KJay, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2You can! It only takes a very simple form of magic, and I can teach it all to you for the very low introductory price of $18.88!
- AppleGeorge, on 11/29/2007, -15/+4I can max out my connection on Waffles and TorrentLeech. This article is pretty lame. Spiderman 3 in 25 minutes? Wow, that's like me telling my friends 10 years ago that I downloaded an mp3 in 35 minutes. /sarcasm.
- Murdats, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14wait, you can leech waffles now? why the hell am i going to the waffle house then?

- madeingermany, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I do remember the first time I tried bittorrent and an entire album took 10min to download. The increase in speed felt like 500% compared to all the other methods of filesharing around in 2004.

- merreborn, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3...You didn't finish reading the article, did you?
The first half of the article is just an example of the sort of snake oil people use to sell "faster" BT downloads. The second half explains that. But you'd know that if you'd actually read the whole thing.

- TheDragon, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I'm a bit confused as to how your comment is relevant. Had you read the site, you'd see that this is not an advertisement. It's bashing on the sites that claim to boost your speed 5 hojillion times.

(oh, the irony.) - whiteguysamurai, on 11/29/2007, -3/+2It's just a virtual-ization trick, by faking a peer you can give it a bit more speed.
I know this from having multiple machines on the network and downloading the same file.- quentinmcalmott, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4If you're using 100% of your bandwidth, you can't download any faster, virtualization or not, unless you magically make other clients compress their files. The boost you see may be when the torrent isn't being widely seeded, so you're only using a portion of your available bandwidth - having two clients allots you twice the download.
- whiteguysamurai, on 11/29/2007, -2/+2if you download the same file to the same directory, over a netword drive.
Don't ask me how it works, i'm not sure of it myself.
But there's only one way for you to find out.
Try it.

- solid12345, on 11/29/2007, -4/+3Gotta give this guy at highspeedtorrent.com credit, at least he is making a buck. It is no less sleazy than the pirate bay putting up penis pill ads to make money while you browse torrents.
- wolferz, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4you realize bit torrent doesn't actually select which ads are shown on their site right? They are selling space to advertising firms that have revolving door and ad-sense type ads. I.e. the people at pirate bay have only as much control as the advertising firm and their ability to switch ad companies gives them.
Add to that that pirate bay isn't actively trying to screw people by praying on their ignorance and yeh, massive difference.- wolferz, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1sorry my bad I meant pirate bay... not bit torrent... and on that note I think I need sleep....
- Jason4000, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Speaking of adds, When I was a newb some 10 years ago I (cough) signed up for some obscure site with my address. I'm still getting targeted adds for girls in that specific town even after moving to 4 different cities and formatting and replacing my computer(not cause of the adds hehe). It's funny cause I realize that the only thing that hasn't changed is the billing name with my ISP. I really wonder sometimes. Good time to change ISP I guess.

- cyphin6, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Now I can download pron 500 times faster than ever before!
- uberdilly, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1How do you do that?
- Acidictadpole, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1The internet is really really great....
- Philluminati, on 11/29/2007, -3/+2isn't 500% just 5 times faster?
- arjie, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Come now, Mr. Philluminati, do you expect me to do primary school math with one hand?
- wolferz, on 11/29/2007, -6/+5hmm.... Interesting bit here. The stuff suggested by torrent freak for improving your rate for torrents is actually very much common sense if you're experienced with computers and the default for most of the applications is to try their best to auto tune to your ideal settings during installation or on the first run. To get a 500% speed increase from these methods would require your torrent client to be very badly configured to begin with.
As for selling something to some one that they can get free being a succeful business model. Just take a look at xbox live. Not only are all the little bonus features from xbox live freely available online already (instant messengers, forums, email, bulletin boards, game download sites/clients, emulators, and strategy/cheat info sites) but the core feature that most people get xbox live for, the ability to play games online, is actually something they already have. It's called an Internet Service Provider. Of course M$ knew that developing all the hardware and having the ability to block a game release for the system meant xbox users were already locked in and that meant it was possible to make xbox users pay for stuff that they ether already technically had or that would be free otherwise. Paying for XBox Live is like paying for access to porn you already downloaded to your hard drive.
So yes not only are people willing to pay for something they could get for free both legally and easily, they will even pay two different companies for a service only one of them is actually providing.- radionics, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2That's quite a dumb view on Xbox Live.
You're not paying to access the INTERNET, you're paying for connection to xbox live servers with regulated service and uptimes.
What you're talking about is like saying you shouldn't pay for WoW because you already have the ability to establish a connection. No, you are paying for a well-refined and regulated service that is worth it's money. Besides, if you can't pay $50 a year, which is actually quite cheap per month, then why would you worry about owning xbox live or even video games in general.
One more thing, look at the Sony approach, their service is free, but can it be compared to Xbox Live? It's no where near as good.
And how!
- radionics, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2That's quite a dumb view on Xbox Live.
- .Steven, on 11/29/2007, -3/+4Wait... so if I am maxing out my connection already, this hidden feature.. well allow me to download at 5x my speed?

- Melancholiatic, on 11/29/2007, -1/+21Did anyone on digg actually read the whole article? Honestly?
- merreborn, on 11/29/2007, -0/+7Apparently just you and I.

- merreborn, on 11/29/2007, -0/+7Apparently just you and I.
- TheFoolyCooly, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Well truth is that it’s very easy to optimize and tweak your Torrent Client so that you can boost and increase download speeds by up to 500% faster.
- Abel-Nightroad, on 11/29/2007, -4/+1Thank you TorrentFreak for looking out for us!
- buibui, on 11/29/2007, -1/+1Why did the owner host http://www.highspeedtorrent.com/proof.html ?
- genuchelu, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Its absolutely legal to sell information..
Its not necessarily a scam website to sell guides on how to improve download speeds for torrents. The same way that its not a scam to hire somebody to come to your house to erase your spyware off your computer. In both situations, you can look up on google on how to do both. I wouldn't mind making some guides myself, and make some promoting websites. Would that really make me a scammer... selling software that does nothing like WinAntivirus are pure scams that are unfortunatelly sucessfull.. - scronline, on 11/29/2007, -4/+2erm, alrighty. Why do we keep seeing articles from torrentfreak anyway? I wouldn't really call specific information about bit torrents really "news worthy". Go ahead, digg me down, but seriously, there's better things out there than this to make it to digg's front page.
- yagidem, on 11/29/2007, -2/+1Agreed. :(
- wordfan, on 11/29/2007, -2/+3Damn, if only I hadn't spent all my money on these penis enlargement pills, I could speed up my downloading. On an unrelated note, I have it on good authority that George Pavlis should be investigated for the unauthorized downloading of Spiderman 3.

- fLUx1337, on 11/29/2007, -3/+2I love how they are taking the piss out of that testimony saying "I downloaded spiderman 3 in under 25 minutes" as if its equivalent to it saying "I made $200k in under a week!"
I download 700MB movies over bittorrent in under 20 minuites, usally 15 if my connection speed is good at the time!
I know people will digg this comment down as if I'm bragging, but I'm not, I'm just making sure you know there are sites a million times better than the pirate bay out their!!!! - stian, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1haha, nice :p
