- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47that guy looks like he's a COBRA soldier.
Ohh the Irony - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19COBRA!!!!!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Beat me to it also - yea, very bad-ass looking.
- slamm6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Airborn insertion with a strap-on ?
Is it just me, or does that sound like a risque trapeze act ? - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Looks more like a Decepticon to me.
SPECIAL FORCES! MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE! - TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12da da da da da da da da batman!
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I originally read the headline as "strap-on stealth wigs"
I was expecting a much different image... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Check this:

When he wants to land, he detaches the wings, which dangle from his harness by a tether, and then deploys his chute. The wing has a cutout in between the wings for the chute pack.
Oh, and you guys should check out this video. A guy straps two R/C engines to his feet and goes skydiving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9DWAuqP-CQ&search=skydive%20jet%20engine - datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dammit you beat me to it. It looks totally bad ass and, from the article, it really works.
- AirCanada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not sure if this is allowed or not but; Direct link to the video:
http://images.military.com/Video/060524_twist.wmv - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"ESG claims the next stage of development will be fitting 'small turbo-jet drives' to the wings to extend range even further."
i'll take two. :D - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8a comment from the article page - "This might be useful to do an airborne insertion of a small team of soldiers. However, it wouldn't be useful for a mass drop. Plus, the time and effort it would take to train soldiers to effectively use this would be great. I doubt it will ever be used in general military operations; just for dark ops."
so I guess currently the military just takes them up in a plane hands them a parachute and says "oh it's really easy, you can figure it out on the way down" - punchingjudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Remember when the military had to be cost effective? Yeah, me neither.
- TheWorkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Worked for me.. The carlos video linked at the bottom of the video page on there is the best!!
http://images.military.com/Video/060524_carlos.wmv - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was thinking Centurions. Power X-TREME! Who was it... Ace McCloud?
Plus, the Red Devils have been using a winged 'squirrel suit' for a while. It doesn't replace a parachute, but it certainly extends range.
Just noticed, looks like there's a BBC logo on the right wing. :D - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 He doesn't have a teenage male companion either.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@slamm6: Haha nice. Lesbian paratroopers!
- Jessimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dudes, that's some flipping ninja crap right there... lord knows i've been waiting for this
- urraca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's been a long day and at first I only read "Special forces to use strap-on... " That definitely made me say "wtf?" at first.
- ZombieFlanders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In mass drops, you don't want your soldiers to go any which way, which would result in them landing nowhere near each other, which would reduce the effect of the mass drop. I believe in WWII the mass drops used parachutes that couldn't steer very much at all so that you'd land surrounded by your fellow soldiers in the area you were meant to land in.
And I'm sure that they give them at least some training : ) - rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The "flying squirrel" suit was featured in one of top gear's tests on a recent episode:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf4k8BUa_hg - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried to make inflateable wings as a kid. Didn't work.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4hahahahahhahahahahhahaha, amazing. All they need to do is attach a jet engine to it, then the fun can really begin!
- atezun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg, for use of the word "strap-on" in a title
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That soldier isn't brooding enough to be batman.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Drexel Spivey: He must have thought it was white boy day. It ain't white boy day, is it?
Marty: No man, It ain't white boy day. - OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't believe there is no mention of Buzz Lightyear on this whole page.
- Beautyon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A 100% pure PR piece, placed in that rag to try and sell this system to the military of the world's nations. There is not a single newspaper that has genuine news in it; the text is either supplied by news agencies or PR companies or press releases.
This piece has no balancing text about WHY this is being developed, WHY people would need to sneak into countries to assinate and cause havoc, its just the raw details of how the system works and how it can be used to deploy troops more efficiently.
Disgusting. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hate to be the dupe nazi, someone is gonna say it, might aswell be me...
DUPE from 10 days ago, front page story, 993 diggs and counting
http://digg.com/science/_Wings_to_carry_paratroopers_200km
its a different source, but the same old story - Crosshare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article brings up the problem of hiding them after landing. I wonder if they'll have some way of destroying the devices rather than burying them.
- jkenneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. The adolescent boy parading about in sequined underoos is indeed missing, without that he can't be batman, he'd be like batman without bats. Simply man.
Though, this does remind me an awful lot of the way Falcon appears in the Ultimates
(Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_%28comics%29#Ultimate_Falcon) - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should put a propulsion source and control surfaces on it, and you'd be your own little airplane.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure why you were negative digged, but it does seem you still need a parachute to land.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can't OH SNAP your own comment.
Well you can, but it's just going to get you dugg down. - goahard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to wear that to my next job interview.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.gijoeaustralia.com/toys/images/wave7/cobraclaws.jpg
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, most light aircraft have at least a 10:1 ratio without power.
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was expecting some flapping. Boooooo....
- clickfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really makes the parachute look antiquated. About time it was replaced.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how stealthy this is. Seems like you would be more undetectable to radar if you were inside of some kind of pod. The human body would probably show up on certain types of radar.
- tannergdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..."and opened his parachute 1,000ft above the ground before landing safely."
"Once close to their target landing zone, the troops pull their parachute rip cord to open their canopy and then land normally.
Weapons, ammunition, food and water can all be stowed inside the wing, although concealing the 6ft wings after landing could prove harder than burying a traditional parachute. "
I pity the guy required to jump during the day, hanging 1000 feet in the air like a big lawn dart. Are they assuming you hit the ground completely vertical and all soft like? How could you run or role with a big freak'n wing strapped to your back? - diakonos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Found the one I was thinking of (with link to video).
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3112095.stm - b3n3llis, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1In 10 years we can all base jump and then glide to work.
- bdwoolman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I saw the vid of the daredevil span the channel I thought it would be perfect for airborne attack. Hot diggity dugg.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not make them inflatable or foldable?
- reject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, beat me to Centurions. Yeah, Ace McCloud. Show rawked. Now, they just need to add those thrusters, and may the Cartoon Wars begin.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else have a hard time buying a 6:1 sustained glide ratio?
- echosierratwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The concept is nice, I can't see this coming to fruition. I wonder if any Airborne Rangers, Rangers, Delta, Army Special Forces, Detachment-1, Marine Force Recon, Navy SeALs and Air Force PJs accepting this. Its got to prove that its 100 percent safe and that ultimately, it will save their lives.
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and what's up with the bright orange reflective strips on the underside? That's not very ***** stealthy.
