- bbronnen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36I hope he is in The Federal Pound-Me-in-the-Ass Prison learning what 'relay rape' really means.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Good, about time. I remember reading that only a dozen or so spammers control the majority of spamming in the US.
Any idea which prison this guy is going to? I am guessing its a federal prison but hopefully not a white collar one. - RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11with no conjugal visits.
- davidjunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hope someone delivers some unwanted "male" into his "box", if you can call it that on a guy. uhh
- cvelusc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hahah. HackJandy had to be setting us up for the inevitable comment by bbronnen. "What is 'Office Space,' Alex?"
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Good. Hackers who help people spam are just as guilty. I hope he rats them out and they are severly punished for what they've done. Huge fines and monitoring of their internet connection should be enough punishment to appease me.
- evilgod69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4people like him do not have ethics, he will just buy some servers elsewhere, and ssh into them... jail time is necessary, hopefully it will scare him straight.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't mind if they were thrown.
...off a cliff. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Remember, that list is just KNOWN spam issues. I'm betting the US is only the highest because we're the strictest in catching them. Do you really think the Chinese are doing anything to stop their spammers?
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hope the guy gets 40 years in a supermax. Given the difficulty in catching and prosecuting these gutterslime scumbags, the only possible deterrent is incredibly harsh sentencing. He should also be fined into utter oblivion; if he ever does get out of jail, I want him living in a refrigerator box.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sinerdo
Well, what he did was definitely a lot worse than what Kevin Mitnick did... but maybe not quite as bad as the Sony Rootkits.
Kevin got the book thrown at him, Sony didn't even get the slap on the wrist with wet bus ticket treatment.
As for comparing it to Grand Theft Auto... the amount of real money spam costs every year is a lot more than what a car costs. I've heard people suggest it costs billions of dollars a year. Even if you assume that is hyperbole and the real figure is only... oh ... say ... hundreds of millions of dollars a year that is still an incredible amount of damage and you compare it to the theft of a single car? - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope he rats out all the bot net passwords that he knows. Botnets are really dangerous things for any legitimate business on the Internet. They are often used for DDoS attacks, and we've been hit by one of them a few year ago, which is not fun at all.
- madIvan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A lot of spam might come _through_ or _from_ Russia or China, but almost all of it is done on behalf of US outfits.Don't think Chinese have much use for mortgage refinancings or herbal Viagra ads in English...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2might rat out a massive network of spammers and hackers to the DOJ to lighten his sentence? more like WILL. somehow i doubt there is honor among spammers.
- evilgod69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4if this drops america down a rank http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/countries.lasso then it's about time america did something.
it's sad how most of america claims most of the spam comes from china and russia...
is he in a state where they can hand out the death penalty? i'm not quite sure about how american law works like that. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The real dangers are the people who get their computer infected time after time, and ISPs that don't disconnect those idiots when it happens, and kicks them out when it happens more then once.
If people had to pay a serious fine (call it administration fees for reconnecting them) when their computer got infected, it would make a difference IMO. - largobargo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2might?!? come on he is going to sing like a bird.
- JoeWall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why is it so urgent ? are you working for the spam king ? afraid he might give out your name?
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is: I have seen spammers whining because another spammer started to comment spam the same blogs as he did, and some spammers considered that unethical.
They have ethics, only different from "ours". Same with honor. - Archimboldo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The best prison for him is probably Abu Ghraib, or maybe Guantanamo.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As much as I enjoy watching this guy go down I'm sure that it will do little to stem the tide of spam.
I get 14,000 spam a day reaching my mail server.
After much filtering only about messages a week get through to my mail box.
It's a amazing the amount of effort people spend sending out crap that no one wants.
It's free speech the spammers cry. I'm all for you to be able to speak just don't speak to me. - cpthorfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just hope that this story isn't a hoax. I haven't been able to find a confirmation yet beyond the echo chamber of sites and blogs citing the original story, which is just a chat log with a "local hacker." Time will tell...
PS if someone finds an independent confirmation please post it to this thread! I wanna KNOW, ASAP!! damnit!! - iam1e3t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No - its exclusively the users fault for installing that activex object.
IE is as secure as Firefox in the big picture - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hope he narc's on 'em all and spam goes away - hah, hah! ;-)
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, that's just not true. I personally picked some malware by simply using IE to nagivate on various sites (never downloaded stuff from unreliable places). Of course, now I don't use IE anymore, because of this very reason.
But you don't have to be stupid to pick up malware while surfying the web. It is exclusively the fault of the MS software engineers who don't give a ***** about their users privacy and security. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What always gets me is "where do all these computers for the bot-nets come from?!" The answer is generally stupid irresponsible users. Stupid computer users are as much of, if not MORE of a problem than the spammers themselves.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they are not stupid, they just can't handle a computer as well as you do. On the other hand, they excel at subjects you are stupid in. So in general they are not stupid.
Moreover, some are just not aware of the problem, which can also be blamed on the geekspeak involved: zombies, botnets h4x0r3d b0x3n.
A part of the solution is simple: infected computer? Disconnect, and pay a reconnection fee after the computer is cleaned up. If it happens again, pay a bit more. - KUKBAHLAM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Typical soft reaction by the Bush administration. If we had stricter corporate controls we would just handle it like the Russians.

How can any of us have any sympathy for anyone involved with scum-sucking, bottom feeders like this. If you lie with dogs, don’t be surprised when you rise with fleas carrying the bubonic plague. Maybe we should handle their sentences with a simple logical formula: Time to be served will equal the amount of time the rest of us spent cumulatively ridding friends, family and co-workers of criminal software.
I am much more sympathetic towards folks like Gary McKinnon who is just an idiot for thinking that the US government keeps anything with real substance on their networks. The consequences of his actions are that the US gov must now pay attention to its network security. The consequences of the actions taken by those who took money from Alan Ralsky involve hours of lost time for those of us working in the field.
May they all be chained to rocks and have eagles perpetually eat their livers. - misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know if they do or don't but at one point in time when I was actively reporting spam, I would traceroute it and definitely over 50% (this is totally unscientific, but just my observation) originated from China. My SOP was to try to trace as far as I could go and report to the upstream provider. Unfortunately not speaking Chinese I don't know that any of my messages were even read. But, I would usually get some type of response from most US carriers, whereas I never received anything from China. Again, maybe just the language thing. Sadly I get so much spam now that I just stopped bothering about it and focus my efforts on filtering it out instead..
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note that botnets are not limited to mail spam, see http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2006/01/16/zombie-comment-spam-referer-spam.html
comment spam is getting done more and more, and the spammers get smarter, they even use part of the original article. It's just waiting for better automatic spam content generation programs to pop up. With some comment spam I had really to think if it was spam or just someone who hardly could write English. - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FINALLY, now my penis will finally revert to it's more comfortable, realistic size and
I can NOT have an erection sometimes.
And maybe I can gain some weight now, too. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, insecure computers are part of the botnet problem. The other part are ***** like him. Most of the folks running botnets aren't doing it for the jollies any more. They are doing it for money. Ralsky pays for access and delivery of his spam. If ***** like Ralsky endup in Federal Pound-me-in-the-ass prison, there won't be anybody paying fractions of a cent for every spam email delivered. There will then be far less of a motive for zombie creation. There will still be folks doing it, for sure, but far fewer once you take away the financial incentive.
- opti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very clever, whoever you are that wrote the "Haplo" bot. A relevant and insightful fragment accompanied by a link to your site. Well, I, for one, am not clicking on it.
- diggsucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"legit spam companies that use shadier methods, older people who do spam stuff on the side to make money"
what is a legit spam company? - Maasneotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HEH I don't know if that comment makes me want to laugh or cry David.
I read an article once about WHY spammers exist. How If 1 out of 10000 people respond to your spam then that piece of spam was worth it. Let's face it its essentially free advertising.I was under the impression that until they banned things like 'open mail relays' on the Internet, most spam is pretty untraceable. I would be interested to learn where most spam comes from, as to whether zombie computers or Open relays are more advantageous.
Rob Cordry had a great way of dealing with spammers, (Crpa this site is totally gonna go down)."http://www.veoh.com/videoDetails.html?v=e54916kg4smEZW&feature=1&numResults=20&query=rob corddry"
The problem is, This guy is an excuse. He is an excuse for growing broadband costs, him and his ilk are the ammunition for Telcos to demand more money (operating costs to shovel spam TO you). Lets hope this guy gives up a couple of people, or maybe even becomes part of some legislation to keep the spam lower.
-Maasneotek - iam1e3t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3as peter would say - "That's what I'm talkin' about when I talk about America!"
- mistercoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best one-liner I've heard in some time - well done!
- rndmcnlly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously...
and the barriers to entry with respect to using a botnet are little to none: http://adamsmith.as/typ0/botnet.txt (initial contact via specialham) - Feztaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Non Sequitur -- why would his happy customers want to rape him? It'd be his angry, disappointed customers with small penises that he'd have to worry about.
- brainiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we can only hope that the bastard tells all and that the feds then pull the deal and put him and his other slimeball friends away for a long, long time. they're all a-holes.
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.
I bet he's really hoping that all those penis enlargement pills he pimped really didn't work ... if they do then he's in BIG trouble in jail when bubba comes a callin'. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2He'll probably just flee to Israel where Jews go for full sanctuary when they are definitely guilty of something in the USA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0What a sellout- You did the crime, you got caught- you do the time. Narc'ing will get you cut in jail, and I hope this guy gets what he's asking for.
- scoobydiesel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3oh poor little spammers....bye bye, we are all going to miss you...until someone else takes over your thrown
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5"Do you really think the Chinese are doing anything to stop their spammers?"
Can you point us to a source that says they don't? Or are you just guessing because they touched your precious USA? - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Though I know many of you would like to see him tortured and fed to ravenous monkeys, you really need to think about comparisons here:
What you need to do is compare him to two other crimes, one lower and one higher, and then pick something in the middle.
He should probably be getting something between Grand Theft Auto ( not the game ) and Racketeering - stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10"Thrown"?
Oh - 'Throne'
I bet ewe half sew men knee problems with spell chequers as they can knot help ewe with ear oars like that - coolian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Spamerica no more?
