- ownedbytheman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+197Give me a break... They made a _clear_ point by showing that the sequence of Muhammad doing something totally harmless would be censored but the sequence of Jesus, basically, ***** on everyone would be left in and that is exactly what happened. The point was, as they clearly stated numerous times, that it was hypocritical to allow certain types of freedom of speech while censoring others due to threats of violence. Even the manatees agreed!
If you can't see the point there, then I am not sure the episodes were meant for you. - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+158"Instead of just putting up the screen that said "Comedy Central will not allow a picture of Muhammad on their network" they had to be immature about it and be just as equally offensive to another major religion."
Talk about missing the point...
What Trey and Matt did was bring the hypocrisy of Comedy Central into focus -- they get censored over Islam and Scientology, but -- to Comedy Central -- Christianity is fair game.
I, for one, would like to be able to enjoy material offensive to ALL religions, not just the ones who are for-the-most-part Republicans. - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -9/+102

Hey look, Muhammed! - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80but that was before the current outrage, which is the whole point. Terrorism ***** works, apparently.
- Vesty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+63CC let them show Muhammed before, a couple years ago, and no one cared
- CarbonLF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62I missed this episode because I had my head buried in sand.
- olorin1984, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67A sad day for american media, I'm afriad this is the first step in more serious censorship issues in response to terrorist threats.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+56South Park is an excellent social commentary and it has always covered real issues of the day and done so in an unbiased manner while at the same time remaining funny.
- johngardiner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52Those past two episodes were so brilliantly made... all the digs at Comedy Central for not showing the Scientology episode, and again for not showing Muhammad. Absolutely brilliant writing. Loved when Bart came in too. South Park has been absolutely amazing this season.
- pudquick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49[flame ON]
I'm going to get anti-dugg into oblivion, but I'm too pissed off to care at the moment.
To anyone who complains about what others say about their religion: GET A ***** GRIP. Religion is FAITH. If you believe and have faith in your religion, who gives a rat's ass what Trey, Matt, Comedy Central or a flock of flying mystical unicorns say?
If the antics of two cartoonists gets your panties in a bunch, maybe you should take a deeper look at how strong your personal faith really is.
[flame OFF] - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Amen Cranium! Don't forget that they've nailed Athiests like me to the wall once or twice as well.
- regyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/04/09/muhammed-was-on-south-park-before/
They should rerun the ep. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+41I'm a muslim / arab (not that the latter has anything to do with the former) and I thought that South Park was hilarious. As for those Danish cartoons that sparked this whole controversy, they're just cartoons - something like that shouldn't enrage you.
All religions seem a little bit ridiculous so i suppose it's only natural they're made fun of.
Oh and btw, while this is slightly irrelevant and in no way a reply to the posts above I'd like to make it clear that Allah is the Arabic word for God, not the name of our God; Christians, Jews and Muslims all worship the same god and all three faiths acknowledge it.
Dirka dirka on... - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -12/+45Lets see what else the koran says.
"Slay them wherever you find them...Idolatry is worse than carnage...Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme." (Surah 2:190-)
"Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it." (Surah 2:216)
"Men are tempted [in this life] by the lure of women...far better is the return of God. Say: 'Shall I tell you of better things than these, with which the righteous shall be rewarded by their Lord? Theirs shall be gardens watered by running streams, where they shall dwell for ever: wives of perfect chastity..." (Surah 3:14, 15)
"Forbidden to you are...married women, except those you own as slaves." (Surah 4:20-, 24-)
"Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Surah 8:36-)
"Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians]...until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (Surah 9:27-)
And before you try to throw bible quotes in my face, I don't subscribe to that BS either. Why? THEY'RE JUST BOOKS....WRITTEN BY MEN. Some other books I don't believe in are Jurassic Park, Rama, and The Firm, although all were very entertaining. - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35strangely enough I agree with poster above (@johngardiner)
I was into southpark when it first came out.... Then it went to much into "pee pee ka ka" humor. When I flipped it on and saw a guy inserting a gerbil you know where......that was the end for me. Then this season started and I had it on while I worked. It was actually VERY funny and not anywhere near as immature as It used to be. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34A victory for Terrorism and Fundamentalism. Violent protests work at silencing American free speech, apparently.
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I dugg that comment up, but after my death, blood will surely be on your hands. ;-)
- hitbyatrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31This has much less to do with overall institutionalized censorship but instead with selective censorship. Juxtaposing the Jesus/Bush/Fecal image, which the station allowed to be shown, with an image of another figure, regardless of its vulgarity, which they DIDN'T allow to be shown, created a powerful statement.
The reason they showed the other image was not to be vulgar, but to make a powerful point about what we don't see and why. - FatHed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30You do know, that by them quiting CC and other such suggestions, that's exactly what the censors would prefer. They have an audience now, why give up their opportunities to speak to that audience because the execs suck some big brown salty balls.
- theplop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Yo, cranium, well said
Being a Mormon, you can see how much they make fun of us. I know whats true and whats not about the stuff they put on thier shows. Some of its funny, some of its not. I don't go threatening them. If i didn't enjoy thier show or was offended by what they did, i wouldn't watch it.
i agree with ownedbytheman
"The point was, as they clearly stated numerous times, that it was hypocritical to allow certain types of freedom of speech while censoring others due to threats of violence."
How is it ok to make fun of one group of people but not another? The mormons and jews won't come kill us, so we will make fun of them, but not the muslims, they might retaliate and blow up our studios.
Its just like making fun of mexicans, but not blacks because the black guy might come beat you up.
All or nothing i say. - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Notice how the anti Catholic defamation guy didnt call for Trey and Matt to be killed. Seriously, this isnt a religion thing, or a Right vs. Left thing. Watch the episodes (rumor is there's uncensored versions on filesharing programs) and it spells out clearly multiple times what this is about. Free speech, the difference between "Being For Free Speech" and "Defending Free Speech".
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31It not just america. Remember this started in Europe. European newspaper editors who ran the original muslim cartoons (the few who did) were fired and/or reprimanded.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Just being respectful of Islamic culture? That is the most cowardly, hypocritical comment I've heard all day. ugm2099 was right, terrorism ***** works.
You don't see anyone worried about offending other groups, because they don't freak out and kill people at the slightest provocation. Thanks, Comedy Central, for helping drive one more nail into the coffin. Oh well, it's not like we were really using all that freedom, anyway. - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Lets not loose sight of the real tragedy; i'll never laugh as hard at a random Family Guy joke again
- FatHed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Dirka Dirka
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Deep satire of censorship issues + totally trashing Family Guy's writing = two of the best episodes of South Park ever!
- philovivero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It would appear that the entirety of the United States is a bunch of whiny little cowards who are afraid of a couple of radical Muslims living on the other side of the world. Is that really the image we (I'm a USian) want to project?
I certainly don't like projecting that image, personally. - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18>> They're just being respectful of the Islamic culture.
I really hope you're being extremely dry in your sarcasm. - pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18He's right at the end of the intro (the crowd shot standing arround the South Park sign). Mohammed is standing in front of Satan (intentional?) with an orange turban.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16And, if you look closely there's a picture of Muhammed in the intro. To probably most of the episodes, but it's definatly in yesterdays.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18No images of muhammed by MUSLIMS. Last time I checked the south park guys were not muslim.
- Strahd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15disclaimer: I'm not a muslim, but have friends who are muslim. For real, dude.
Actually drawing a picture of mohammed is not expressly forbidden in the Holy Qu'ran, per se. It is however frowned upon according to the Hadith (a book of commentaries about the Qu'ran).
However this restriction should only apply to muslims. Non-muslims should not be held to the standards of a book they don't believe in. (most) Christians have tolerated images of God and Jesus for a long time, despite that "graven image" thingy in those commandments. - heretik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Here is a screenshot of Muhammad in the into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Southparkseason10opening.png He was just aded this season.
- Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16/sarcasm
Hmm... maybe we should use terrorism and fundamentalism to protest DRM, RIAA, and the MPAA - reverendpaco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I wouldn't necessarily call them 'unbiased'.... They exhibit clear and certain
biases, as do we all. The main differentiator is their clear independence from
a 'party'.
Whereas most people with less thought out critical skills will adopt the party line
in lieu of coming up with an opinion, these guys seem to have worked out
a very libertarian ethos on their own.
The fact that their anti-PC pleases the 'South Park Republicans', and other
aspects of their politics pleases more liberal members means, ultimately, that
they have biases which appeal to both sides (and by sides, I mean Democrat and
Republican) .
Don't get me wrong. I think South Park is the best thing since sliced bread,
but if anything they have an amazing amount of bias. And Mohamed Bless
them for that. - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15At first I thought this was a joke, as the episode was funny (I watched it last night). However, this explains why that scene was edited as I thought it was part of the episode. For all the crap that goes down on Comedy Central, I find it hard to believe they would edit that clip out.
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's been in all the eps since the "Smug Alert" one.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm sorry but the fact that CC censored this in reality, makes the whole episode that much funnier. Seriously, when I watched this last night, I thought it was part of the show. It only drives home the point that the writers were trying to make that much more.
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16His ratings are in the toilet, but thanks to his contract it's a solid gold, diamond encrusted toilet...
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Here is the main point of these episodes:
They can't show an image of Muhammad but they can show Jesus and President Bush crapping on each other. - circa1015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12To get the point of the episode, simply listen to Kyle:
"By cencoring the episode, you are ALLOWING terrorism to work." - Pureeviljester, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22I'm a christian and I watch South Park sometimes. But even when it makes fun of religion I just don't watch. It's not right that religious people try to dictate what is shown on television or what the viewers can or can't watch. It's not really any religions fault here it's CC's. Then again they own the network so they can do what they want.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I'm going to go out on a limb here at Digg and unapologetically admit that, yes, I am a *gasp!* Christian.
Although I think South Park is just popular as a result of its shock value, I think they exposed Comedy Central for the hypocrites they are. Sure they'll show Christ as a caricature of whatever Parker and Stone dream up and even be downright blasphemous in the way they depict Jesus. As they demonstrated in the cartoon they are allowed to show Jesus "defacating on a US President (doesn't matter which one, it could've been Abraham Lincoln for all CC cares) and then defacating on the US flag, but they can't show an image of Muhammad??? What kind of country is this? Kyle is right. Comedy Central is allowing terrorism to work. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm all for equality. Everybody should be made fun of and mocked, giving one religion immunity from that is just as bad as being prejudice towards that religion.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is all Tom Cruises doing.
- Destinatus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Just like Vesty said. They showed muhammed in the super best friends episode with david blaine
- tommythetomcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm glad Matt and Trey have the balls to do what no one thinks should be done, but this is about free speech and to censor him in this episode because of world events is ridiculous. Notwithstanding they just happen to make it funny most of the time too.
- Giever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Hey, at least Family Guy doesn't get all preachy and up its own ass with messages!
- Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15***** censorship. Seriously, I just don't know what else to say.
- RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I have to agree. The overtones of American media censorship in these two episodes were damn near the truth although they were played out in the episode as foolish. Americans are now used to this censorship by way of fear and something must be done. I don't wish to be preachy, but it's up to us!
