- steveohan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've lived in korea for the last two years, and trust me...when people see Gmarket, they DONT think of google.
also @smohan123 people dont shop on gmarket because they hate america and US based companies. s. korea is a tiny country and normally when you buy something online here, you'll have it in your hands the next day. its super convenient and cheap.
internet shopping is HUGE here.
koreans love crazy flashing *****. flashing neon signs on the street...or flashing animated gifs. - wfmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All those flashing .gifs almost gave an epileptic fit!
http://www.gmarket.co.kr/ - smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like the S. Korean aspect is a world apart from middle America. I take back what I said. Not a rip off, just catering to the local flavor.
:) - GerryDaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm currently living and teaching English in Seoul, South Korea. People here love doing their shopping online. However, most deals can be found in the markets such as Dongdaemun, Namdaemun, or Myeongdong. I don't think this is any threat to eBay...
For example, those looking to buy a digital camera, the cheapest prices are those shops near Namdaemun Gate...
Check out my blog, yo:

I can't stand the amount of animated gif ... - smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@raingrove
Not really. I did a search for Gmarket on the web (http://www.gmarket.co.kr/ for anyone interested). I went and did the laundry, ate breakfast, came back and it hadn't finished loading. Now, I guess a major factor behind why it's so slow is the (non-) proximity of their closest server, but look at the layout. It's terrible. It's like a collage.
Generally speaking, Google services are not only easy to use, but are also aesthetically pleasing and functional. I think the only traffic they will get will be from South Korean residents who really hate America and any US-based company. I mean, look at their name for crying out loud. Even that is practically a rip off. The first thing I thought of when I saw the name "Gmarket" was Google. I know, Google doesn't own every word that starts with "G", but the connotation is there nonetheless. Wouldn't you agree? - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Someone managed to make a site that makes MySpace look good!
- discoflux3145, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the lead-in to this story was a mistake; it's got nothing to do with the Dongdaemun market. Maybe it was the intended caption for a different photo.
- legendxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Am I the only one who thinks South Korea should be making more of an effort to stop North Korea from causing a nuclear winter instead of making it the rest of the world's problem and walking hand in hand with them during the Olympics. I mean people fought the Korean war for a reason and all we get are Korean immigrants coming to our country and doing math better than everyone.
