- Mudger, on 01/10/2008, -12/+121R.I.P. HD-DVD
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/10/2008, -9/+71Paramount and Universal couldn't save HD DVD. It would be better for the HD DVD camp, studios and consumers alike if they would just realize it is over. Dragging it on won't change much at this point.
- SupaDawg, on 01/10/2008, -5/+44I'm no fan of sony whatsoever, but this is a very good thing. One of the formats needed to die. The format war has been a mess for consumers, hardware companies and the studios alike.
Lets get this over with so we can finally progress into the era of HD. - HA5TY, on 01/10/2008, -5/+35THE WAR IS OVER!!!!!!
- CaviMike, on 01/10/2008, -5/+33'Blu-Ray' sounds cooler anyways.
- LetsGoHawks, on 01/10/2008, -6/+33And for those who still believe porn will be the deciding factor

Now, if only we could do something about that _other_ war. - BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -20/+44Now that Engadget is reporting it, I believe it. If Engadget says it seems "too believable to pass up", it must be happening. I'll trust their sources anyday. Rumor nothing. This thing is in the works.
The format war is over, pending Universal and Paramount press releases. - thatsmyaibo, on 01/10/2008, -5/+28I'm the fanboy? Are you seriously holding on to hopes that HD DVD will make it out of this alive? Sorry buddy but you are more fanboy than I ever will be. I'm not a fanyboy, I just realize Blu Ray has the upper hand in this one.
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/10/2008, -0/+22And finally WB is bringing over the WB titles like Batman and Matrix in 1.1! I'm excited...
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Warner/Warn ... - shinythingy, on 01/10/2008, -0/+21well they couldn't.
- floejoe, on 01/10/2008, -2/+22At last. I couldn't care less who wins the 'war' I just want to buy my favorite shows in high definition. I'm a bit tired of being an early adopter with a house full of crap that will never be used.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/10/2008, -0/+19those are probably the same people that thought "I have an HDTV, and I have a DVD player, this should work in it."
Seriously. Check out Amazon HD-DVD reviews.
The naming has confused the general public, not the opposite. - CrimsonBlur, on 01/10/2008, -0/+18I don't have any personal experience, but I have seen demos of how scratch resistant the coating is, and it's very impressive. HD-DVD's scratch just as easily as a DVD but of course the grooves are so much smaller it's much easier to mess them up. I have the XBOX 360 HD-DVD player, by the way.
- xike, on 01/10/2008, -0/+17Agreed. Those squirrels have it coming.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -2/+17Link to the original post: http://formatwarcentral.com/index.php/2008/01/09/t ...
- Typhoon2009, on 01/10/2008, -2/+15If Paramount and Universal go Blu-ray... does HD DVD have ANY major studio backing them?!
- scabbers, on 01/10/2008, -5/+17Makes sense. The winner has been declared, they're not going to back the losing format and lose all those sales.
- dn11, on 01/10/2008, -6/+18Yeah kind of like those false rumors about the iPhone delay that engadet reported on that caused Apple stock to tank for no reason - engadget never gets it wrong
- BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -2/+14At this point, HD-DVD is the football team down 3 touchdowns with 12 seconds left lining up for an onside kick. It's just sad at that point.
- dn11, on 01/10/2008, -0/+11there's only the entire back catalog of every film ever made.
- sl123000, on 01/10/2008, -3/+14I, for one, welcome our new, shorter-wavelength overlords.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11It's not adjusting facts, it's giving equal time.
- Speed, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10For a format to win, the majority of the people have to support it, not you and a handful of other Digg users. Physical media isn't going anywhere soon, neither is television, simply because 5Mbps cable internet is too slow for digital media, and it's not user-friendly enough for the end user (also, if you're gonna watch a movie, most people would prefer to watch it on their big screen TV than on their 15 inch computer monitor.
- Speed, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11And ease of use is plugging a box into your TV and slipping a plastic disc into the box. Not installing 3rd party software, waiting four hours for the movie to download, downloading the right codec, then finding some way to get the film onto your TV from your computer (unless you're one of those freaks who enjoy watching an action movie on a 15in monitor)
- Typhoon2009, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10Until digital distro provides FAST, UNBROKEN (AKA no stupid buffering in the middle of a movie) streams with 1080p24 at HIGH QUALITY, with Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA, home theater enthusiasts will likely stick to hard media. I myself like the idea of digital distro except that most of the US doesn't have the internet for it (I bet the house that if we used the money on one of those DoD projects that gets tons of funding but ultimately disappears we could get real internet deployed). I also like having a disc and a case... there's something personal about it so to speak. You KNOW you own it.
- LemonChicken, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10There are too many pointless wars going on today that you're going to have to be more specific.
- Books, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11Exactly. All of thatsmyaibo said is true. I'm just ***** pissed off at the HD-DVD drive I just bought for my Xbox.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -1/+10Remember who the average consumer is. The technologies are very similar, so which to choose? Most consumers are confused about HD anyway. A digger left a comment the other day that caught my eye. "HD-DVD" is 5 syllables. "Blu-ray" is 2, and rolls off the tongue. Aside from that, psychologically, blue is a safer global color. I know this sounds stupid, but so is your average consumer when it comes to HD. Read on: http://iit.bloomu.edu/vthc/Design/psychology.htm
- dn11, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9I understand what you mean. And I genuinely hope the sources are true on this one, I just won't be totally convinced until the studios themselves make a statement
- gunnerfan14, on 01/10/2008, -1/+10nope
- Speed, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9I work in the electronics department at a department store, and every day I get customers asking "do you have one of those high definition DVD players?" "No." "Well, what's this thing here?" "An up converting DVD player" "Isn't that the same thing?". They really did a disservice calling it HD-DVD, just because to the end user, they thing it's like the same format as DVD.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9Link?
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9"and I really hate the blu-ray feature that allows them to force you to watch commercials in the middle of the movies..."
Does not exist. Stop lying. - tastypastry, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8No, only if they wish to watch HD movies.
- mdaize, on 01/10/2008, -8/+16yep, losing the console wars?
if u align the launchs, the ps3 has marginally taken the 360...
combine that with the large variety of games, free online play, and a lot more potential at this point and its hard to see how it wont win...
(the wii doesnt count in the console wars becuase a) novelty b) casual gaming console) - BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -4/+12I didn't say never. I said I'd trust their sources anyday. They, unlike some, are less likely to pull the trigger early on a story, and will at least cite a credible insider. The title also clearly says "Sources say", so take that with a grain of salt. To me, the source is credible enough to say the format war is over. To you, perhaps not.
- ilukedukei, on 01/10/2008, -6/+13I'm happy i own a PS3!
- Typhoon2009, on 01/10/2008, -1/+8I've waited so long to see Neo freeze bullets in mid-air at the ending of The Matrix in HD.
- matt.rubin, on 01/10/2008, -3/+10yay peace in the HD war........... now i can buy a player
- Hobbes24, on 01/10/2008, -3/+10i have nothing against HD-DVD, i'm just glad as a consumer that i won't accidently buy the wrong format and basically burn a huge pile of money
- Speed, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Yup, just like people with VCRs bought DVD players once companies stopped releasing movies on VHS. That's the way technology works.
- celkin, on 01/10/2008, -9/+16Bah! Let 'em have Blu-Ray. I STILL say HD Laser Disc will beat both camps in the long run!
- scienceninja, on 01/10/2008, -0/+6Does this mean we'll start seeing macs with blu-ray drives?
- devophl, on 01/10/2008, -3/+9Well, the industry money was on Blu-ray. Only Microsoft and Toshiba were really promoting HD-DVD. The rumors flew back in the summer when Paramount and Dreamworks went HD-DVD exclusively that Microsoft had to sweeten the pot to even get a single studio to go exclusive. HD-DVD did it right with solidifying the specs early on but the rest of the industry seemed to want Blu-ray. Blu-ray is still a moving target and probably won't be a standard for several years as they continue to add more functionality. Blu-ray is a more expensive format to produce and it will probably take at least 18 months for affordable Blu-ray players to make it into the stores. To me, the formats are pretty much the same but Blu-ray had regional encoding which the studios demanded (in other words, it holds up HD-DVD releases here in the states until the movie has been released worldwide) and higher level DRM which the studios feel they need to prevent pirating. In the end, I believe that was the deciding factor.
For me, I'm waiting until the version 1.2 players come out which should be the end of this year. This will add functionality that will trump existing DVD (in addition to just offering a better picture). By then, the volume of Blu-ray players being bought (probably for Christmas) will start to bring the prices down to near where HD-DVD players are today. We'll see. - CaviMike, on 01/10/2008, -3/+9Hence why people buy Lexus instead of Toyota.
- toefer, on 01/10/2008, -1/+7I think mdaize and tahiri are right. If you look at PS3 sales in its first 13 months, and the 360's sales in its first 13 months, the PS3 sold more consoles. Take that however you want to mean whatever you want. Since the 360 came out a year earlier, it consequently holds a sizable lead for total consoles sold.
- Sevzi, on 01/10/2008, -7/+13Scratch coating? I don't see this addressed, but I have a lot of mucked-up DVDs from scratches (library). Blu-ray overcompensates for its vulnerability by using a special coating. Any anecdotal evidence this is better? This alone makes me happy it won.
- brianjlowry, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10I love Microsoft and I own a PS3. Not really sure what that means, but your post inspired me to state it.
- dn11, on 01/10/2008, -4/+9Finally, Criterion Collection can soon commit to release in Blu-Ray. Am I the only one that cares about this more than the Universals and Paramounts of the world?
