- uglyredhonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The trick is that they haven't committed to replacing the CDs that use SunnComm's copy protection software (ex: Foo Fighters' _In Your Honor_), and haven't stricken down their plan to issue all of their CDs with copy protection next year.
I don't think they've realized that once people are trained to see "copy protection" and "Sony" in the same sentence as a bad thing, they won't distinguish which version of the copy protection the disc has. They just won't buy the discs. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see Sony recieved the letter from the EFF :)
- themajor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a start. They should also do something for those people who have already had the rootkits installed.
- quastor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh god, don't even digg this. How in the world could I spell Sony wrong?
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm.... maybe I'm retarded, but I don't see where Sony is supposedly spelled wrong... did the title actually get edited?
- unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe the new cds can be put on an iPod now.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well isn't that nice of them.....I'm still not going to buy any sony products.
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@themajor - Sony is also offering to trade in your infected CD for a new one, and if you can get your hands on a rootkit remover then all should be good. But still, boycott the bastards. Look what they do to our community, they create poor spellers ;).
- thedazman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do you get the exchange... that's what I want to know.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pwny will never create a disc that cannot be replicated and transcoded - so maybe they should stop trying.
Oh, and for every Sony product, I can think of another company that will do a better alternative product cheaper. All you're paying for is really heavy marketing. - bivouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be buying Sony products solely because of the response I received from an email expressing my concern:
"...These components are not malicious nor spyware however to alleviate any concerns that users may have about the program posing potential security vulnerabilities the update removes the cloaking component from their computers. Please visit the link below to install the SP2a update..." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Sony. They have the greatest TVs on earth.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that Sony has been caught bending over their customers and pumping hard, they want to apologize.
Thing is. . .what are they doing, or have done, that we DON'T know about?!? - tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad I bought a DS instead of a PSP
- Olain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To little to late, Sony still sux for doing this. Can't take that back now.
- nwagers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@vincenzo: Why would MS screw with the kernel they wrote? They don't NEED a rootkit. They can tie whatever they want into the kernel to begin with.
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hah no problems man. I'd rather you spell Sony wrong, that way we don't actually have to mention them. From now on I will call them Song.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We win! eat it, Sony. Still not buying anything with the Sony name on it, though.
- SUPERTOY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But will they send the Geeksquad to my house and remove the rootkit from my copmuter too . . . haha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 That's right, GIVE IN!!!!
- ShaneApex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't mind paying for any music i want, but from this point forward, any Sony music i want will be downloaded from P2P services in order to protect me and my computer. Way to go Sony, way to get the exact opposite of what you want.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony needs to stop tugging on Superman's cape.
- 298th_Scat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope they start releasing some poor sony commercial talking about how much there own F##K UPS cost them rather then the woo HOO Bad Pirates.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0F*ckers. Just because they've recalled it doesn't make it ok. If I were to distribute a rootkit like this to Sony, exposing Sony ? What if Sony got later hacked and they found it was me. They'd sue my ass to jail.
Do you think later on me saying - I'll recall my rootkit means its ok ?
No F'ing way. Sony should pay for this. They should impose huge penalty on Sony to discourage others from doing this. Just like they would do to the other guys - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Half way there, now they need to clean up there install.. and promise never to go there again :D
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now they need to fix their uninstaller which is one big security risk!
http://www.digg.com/gaming/Sony_Confirms_It:_No_DRM_For_Future_PS3_Disks - kris2per, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony >:D : If it wasn't 4 those medling kids I would have ruled the world Muhahahaha!!! I shall return!!! With a more diabolical DRM!!!
- V3ROCITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, lemme get this straight. We put the copy protection on the cd’s to prevent people from making illegal copies, because we lose sales when that happens, it costs us millions every year. So now we have not only frustrated and pissed off the majority of mainstream music buying America, we have also achieved getting ourselves a handful of large scale lawsuits AND we are now recalling and replacing all of the original cd’s we put out. I’m no financial guru or anything, but doesn’t it seem that if we left off the copy protection to begin with it would have cost us far less money?...and everyone might not be so angry with us?...and people still might be buying our products? This was the best route?
- stisev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too late.
All of my friends and family are boycotting Sony video/audio CDs/DVDs.
Sony hardware sucks (DRM) anyways, so I don't buy any anyways. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good start, still much to be done
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sony makes the worst product, period!
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sony executives need to be castrated.
- odin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1SONowned?

- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Digg has the worst spellers on the f@ce of teh plahn3t.
- kenta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0When I tried to access this digg, I was redirected to the digg.com homepage repeatedly. I came back about 20 minutes later and then it was working. Any idea why? I think it had to do with the apostrophe in the title. Maybe a bug?
Thanks,
Kent
