- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33When was the last time Sony had some good press? PS3 is tanking, Blu-Ray is tanking, PSP marketing gone wrong, and the root kit stuff. I'm never buying a Sony product again.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It may average to $175 per person, but in reality $170 of that goes to the attorneys and we each get a $5 off PS3 coupon.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Wow, that's great, I'll be expecting my $10 off another sony product coupon in the mail here shortly.
These lawsuits don't really mean ***** - they could have sold AIDS in a playstation portable box, and at the most they'd have to send out a few coupons. - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"at least until Spiderman 3 comes out."
grab a burlap sack and hop in my car. we're off to find Toby Mcguire - scottcbp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14How much money do you think it will cost Sony to deal with false claims?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17for a bunch of people who hate Sony you sure talk about them a lot
- mitrebox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11another example for need of tort reform
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tort_reform
most commonly mentions frivolous lawsuits but also has implications on how much of a percentage lawyers can claim and how class action judgments must be paid. - tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Back when this whole Sony rootkit story broke, Matt Vea wrote a very good article about rootkits. Here it is if you find yourself trying to explain rootkits to someone:
Rootkit Analysis: The "r00t" of Digital Evil

- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder how much goes to the lawyers? 99.5% or merely 99.4%?
- Brog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Given the successes of the Wii and HD-DVD, that might not be as hard to do as some people think...
...at least until Spiderman 3 comes out. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually I got into the last class action lawsuit involving the price gouging of CD's involving a few record companies and I got a $15 check in the mail a bit later. Things DO come out of these types of lawsuits...it might not have been anything incredible, but it was still nice.
- angrycows, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@fletchowns
You forgot to mention the exploding laptop batteries. - tlink211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sony makes some great stuff...I just don't trust them enough to buy any of it.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"Boycott Sony"
Boycotting Sony suggests you want the product in the first place.
I think what you mean is: don't buy stuff you don't want. :-) - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What happens to the PS3 if Blu-Ray doesn't catch on as a standard movie format? I'm really curious
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Haters......
Sony is so 'funky fresh'. You can't say the same about MS and Nintendo. - acceptab1euname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@baxtermaddux: I don't have to bring my own doorknobs, then?
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lolz. U winz free rootkitz 4 lyfe
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, I got a 200 dollar check from a title company once... made for a great night at the bar lol ...
- tropican8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$25 to $175 per person? If my data got corrupted from removing a rootkit I'd lose way more than that!
- ComputerDudes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have been avoiding Sony since October of 2005 when the rootkit story came out. We have a PS2 so it was kinda hard. But I bought a 48" TV this year, I liked the Sony one but didn't buy it cause of the rootkit thing. Along with 20 other minor electronic choices I made this year I avoid Sony if possible. Too bad so sad for them.
And Now I can buy a Wii and stop buying PS games. Sony can bite me. Everyone should boycott them and send them a message that customer Friendly = $$$ Duh. - bigwyrm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And don't forget alliwantforchristmasisapsp. They can't even fake being popular.
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DIE SONY!!! DIE !!!!
- cloudless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remember the days when Sony was the king of portable audio equipment?
The current Sony Walkman sunk (and sucks), so is ATRAC.
My SonyEricsson phone (m600i) also sucks big time, it is so unstable I really regret buying it. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony got off way too lightly. If a private citizen had written and distributed that software, he'd be looking at about 5 years in jail, enormous fines, & an injunction to never use a computer again. Sony pays $1.5M, chump change for a company like Sony. It's like fining a private citizen $50.
Hell, $1.5M is guaranteed to be 1/10th or less of the CEO christmas bonus programme. - SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10I am ashamed of having a PSP
- ktchpmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn. I think I'm not eligible because I requested to get an unifected CD to replace my old one. Oh well, that just means that lawyers will get a bigger cut.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well Jack Kevorkian just got out of jail so he could help Sony end its life in a harmless and peaceful manner.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"What happens to the PS3 if Blu-Ray doesn't catch on as a standard movie format? I'm really curious"
Last time I heard I think they have a 5 year contract with the company that manafactures the actual blu-ray players that come with the PS3 so if anything they will have to either pray to God Blu-Ray catches on or lose money for the next 5 years then reevaluate where they went wrong. which in Sonys case is everything - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Losing the portable audio business after declaring that all of their customers are thieves was the result of Sony getting into the content provision side of things with music and movie companies and as far as I'm concerned marked the beginning of the end for them.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dammit
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do we get this? I got one of these CD's and filled out that website and got the free uninfected MP3's after the lawsuit started, does that mean I am not eligible for the cash payout?
- niznik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems that Sony has become obsessed with going it's own way and unfortunately it is not always the best path for it's customers. Even with that said, for every duff product they do also produce some good kit. It is also the only company to produce a robotic dog where you can stick a memory stick up its arse, so props there!
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tort reform is a good idea but this was hardly a frivolous lawsuit.
What Sony did flew in the face of the law and there was never any doubt about things ending in tears for them. - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com/
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just out of curiousity.. would it be worth buying one of those cd's on the list and making a claim?
- kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn I have one of those CD's that actually caused damage to my PC, I wonder if this only applies to Texas and Cali residents???
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fletchowns
Couldn't have said it better myself. Everything I ever had SONY branded broke down with time. I keep noticing that whatever they do, I can find better or equal quality from other brands at better prices, so I really have given up on the SONY brand for electronics. The latest wave of negative news, day after day, really doesn't help.
Movies, sweet. Music, okay (or 'bad' if you consider the root kit). But everything else? Sorry SONY, I'm just not stupid enough. - deanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you not familiar with the original event you can check out some links on my blog here;

Cheers,
Dean - chokeaduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I thought that I would have purchased more than one of those CDs. Just one... Anyhow, free money is good, I don't need the UPC code, so I guess I'll be sending that one off.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I agree with Wii over PS3, but I disagree with HDDvD being a clear cut winner over Blu-Ray. Please present me proof of these claims.
- memoBug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the apology?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5"What happens to the PS3 if Blu-Ray doesn't catch on as a standard movie format? I'm really curious"
It stays a gaming box.
Think PSP, the UMD movie format went to hell, but the system itself is shaping up very well as much as people don't like to admit it (not sales, I know, but for gaming as a whole, a lot of great games have come out on the PSP in the past year.) - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2sony be trippin yo
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2in soviet japan........
- david050, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the sad thing is, this isn't the first time they were caught spying on people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0No... Just.. No...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1If you cpughed while tpying that, why did you spell it out? Were you dictating?
OK, Monty Python references aside, you do realize that TYPING the sarcastic "cough" makes you look foolish, don't you?
