- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -7/+66"The yields for Blu-ray laser diodes are still low due to a high technical barrier, with only Sony and Nichia being the only suppliers, stated the paper. In addition, Sony is setting aside a major proportion of its laser diode capacity for its upcoming PS3, which may also affect the availability of its Blu-ray laser diodes, the paper said. Sony is currently the major supplier of laser diodes for Royal Philips Electronics, BenQ and Lite-on IT, the paper indicated. The tight supply will not ease before September since Sony will not start shipping its PS3 before then, the paper said."
Looks like the PS3 is hogging all the chips available. Nice work Sony. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49"Sony's confidence in its ability to dictate the industry standard backfired when JVC made the tactical decision to engage in open sharing of its VHS technology. JVC sacrificed substantial potential earnings by going the open sharing route, but that decision helped to win the standards war."

"Do you people not realize there are lots and lots of big companies backing Blu-ray?"
Do you realize that as the studios realize that HD-DVD owns the market and that the PS3 is a white elephant, they'll switch over faster than Courtney Love relapses? - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22nyxeroster: dugg down just to piss you off :P
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Am I reading the right story here? I don't see anything about a BD delay. All I see is a story about limited availability of non-PS3 BD players. Everyone, including Sony, has been saying that for the last year or more. I don't even like Sony's overpriced products but please stop with the FUD. It's pathetic.
- kingsquest, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30what did you expect ? It´s a Sony..
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28"IT'S JUST BAD NEWS AFTER BAD NEWS AFTER BAD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH I SHOUD'VE BOUGHT A 360 A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!! I don't wanna pay for potential! I want the goods!"
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+27"Looks like the PS3 is hogging all the chips available. Nice work Sony."
I don't see how this is even remotely a problem. Given the relative pricing between dedicated Blu-Ray players and the PS3, the latter will have all the market penetration in the beginning anyway. I was suprised when even my dad was considering a PS3 for this reason.
The general public is not going to care about Blu-Ray at first. Getting it into the living room *should* be their first goal, and the PS3 is the easiest (and ironically the cheapest) solution at this point. - JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Seems like everybody hates Sony on digg. But yet Sony stories keep making the front page. Is Sony that celebrity we all hate but still follow them around like the paparazzi.

I know you think the multi-click thing is cool but... try refreshing the page - absoluteczech, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18sure they do, its called cell phones europe gets cells phone up to a year before they get released in the US. stop speaking from your ass
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"...won't be ready to launch products in Europe until next year"
Things always release in Europe after Japan and America. o.O - ludditus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10HDTV penetration in Europe is about half of what it is in Japan and North America. It's about 2 years behind in the adoption rate curves.

Perhaps the BluRay coalition is prioritizing the markets with the highest current HDTV penetration until their production is up to full capacity. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'm sick and tired of this. Can't we just skip ahead to the NEXT format?
- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I think ultimatly HD-DVD will win.
1. HD-DVD makes sense to consumers. We (tech people) understand what blueray is but we are only a fraction of the market. Blueray may be a better format but it is a lot easier to understand what HD-DVD is. You'd think they would have learned from the BetaMax vs. VHS war.
2. HD-DVD is already available - Best Buy has a bunch of HD-DVD movies for $25. I didn't see any BlueRay discs or players. Late to market with a competing format will hurt their marketshare even if Blueray is much better. Yes I know that Blueray is on the market now, but at least at BestBuy in Scottsdale it is invisible. - themacx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17FOR THE LAST TIME SONY DID NOT CREATE BD... MANY COMPANY'S ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BD!!!!!
The BDA has over 170 members. Its Board of Directors consists of representatives from Apple Computer Corp.; Dell, Inc.; Hewlett Packard Company; Hitachi, Ltd.; LG Electronics Inc.; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Panasonic (***** Electric); Pioneer Corporation; Royal Philips Electronics; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Sharp Corporation; Sony Corporation; TDK Corporation; Thomson; Twentieth Century Fox; Walt Disney Pictures and Television; Warner Bros. Entertainment to name a few.
STOP FLAMING SONY FOR SPEARHEADING NEW TECHNOLOGY....DAMN! undugg inaccurate. - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23@isewise "Demand is high, supply is low."
You're talking about PS3 right?... Ok... I just had to clarify.. you know.. cause no one wants one.
Five Hundred and Ninety Nine US Dollars. - Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13You say goodbye, I say hello.
Hello Hello! - ohsoserial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10While I doubt Sony will ever go bankrupt, this is certainly hurting their position. While they do have their fingers in a LOT of pies, (how many Sony products do you own? I can count 6 in my living room alone, not counting Sony DVDs, CDs and PS2/PS1/PSP games) availability and bad press will hurt their market presence more then anything.
I, personally, rethink my position before buying any Sony product now and check for alternative manufacturers. I'm a big fan of LG. I hope they become the new Sony in the way of A/V and computer equipment. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Emasoft
That's a content issue. Blu-ray is capable of VC-1 also. I have no idea why they used an inferior codec to start with. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Given the relative pricing between dedicated Blu-Ray players and the PS3, the latter will have all the market penetration in the beginning anyway."
Only among gamers, at best. The vast majority of consumers are barely aware of either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, and they certainly won't be perusing the videogame section at Best Buy to find a player.
The entire notion that non-gamers buy consoles to watch movies is ludicrous. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Apparently. In this case the story wasn't even about Sony, but put Sony in the title and you'll get crazy diggs.
- Thrasher9, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Is it just me or does it feel like Sony just isn't ready for Blu-Ray. It seems like they are rushing out to the market .
- bmhoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Agreed with the above poster IN THAT we shouldn't count Sony (nor the PS3) down and out because of this. In that regard...
It doesn't do us much good to automatically apply the VHS v. BETA analogy to every standards war. WHY? Because nowadays can't the market support more than one standard? Seeing as the discs are the same size physically players can be made (eventually, as prices drop) to play/burn both, just like the DVD-R and DVD+R standards.
I'm just thinking out loud here I could be dead wrong. Personally, I would rather just have all the companies of the world just pick a standard and go with it - it's easier and I'm a lazy, lazy man.
I think blu-ray still has a dynamite chance. But who knows we'll see! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Direct link to the real story:

I've known their consumer audio equipment was shoddy for years, but after dealing with one of their Vaio PCs and watching them butcher EverQuest I've sworn off of them for good.
- negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@ crilen007
Nobody wants one? I hope you dont think that just because most Digg users wont be getting the PS3, the rest of the world wont. If you went outside for a bit, you might realize that many people are going to be getting the PS3, regardless of price. It has alot of hype behind it. Anyways, The internet does not represent the street. While it may not sell as much as the PS2, the PS3 is bound to sell millions at least.
You are wrong. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't see how this changes anything. They need to focus their attention on the PS3 before stand alone blu-ray players.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Ummm what words do you disagree with? Even $599, is it not cheaper than any other BR players right now? The PS3 won't dominate the BR player market?? Are you saying the PS3 won't come out this year??? Boy you must know a lot of things the majority of Diggers don't know.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10And if you guys were in charge maybe we'd just now be getting DVDs. Awesome!
- Jarett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty sure the article does not even mention ps3. It talks about standalone blu-ray players - in EUROPE ONLY. The title could have used the word "Europe"
- CMiYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Further reports show there's a problem producing enough laser diodes for Blu-ray burners,"
Why would a reduction in burners matter? Widespread adoption of the technology won't occur in the first wave with burnable media.
The discs you buy at a store (CD, DVD, BluRay, whatever), with content on them, are created with a manufacturing press. Nobody can afford the time it would take to "burn" each copy of a disc produced in a factory! Burning a DVD takes ~10 minutes. Mass production through stamping the alumnium layer takes seconds. The same will apply to Blu-Ray. - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Samsung is the New Sony(I mean the Sony that ruled the market some 10 years ago) ...they have been making quality products for the last several years.
- Radiohead84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ok people really need to stop saying
"This is dead"
"Its over"
"PS3 sucks!"
"sony is screwed"
Yes I agree they havent done the best in the PR department but for god sakes they dont have any of this out yet so how they hell can you all know how its going to turn out...or all you guys all just that smart and knowledgable about new and upcoming technology that it appears sony needs to hire you!
The fact is if Blue-Ray has enough support from the movie and tech companies then they will do well. IF Blue Ray does well..Sony's PS3 will also do well.
And I agree...this story really has nothing to do with with the PS3.... - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Accurate title: Pioneer's Blu-ray players delayed in Europe
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah! I mean, who hear has ever watched a Disney movie? And no one I know has ever even heard of Twentieth Century Fox. And don't get me started on Warner Bros.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO BASIS IN REALITY!
This story doesn't mention Sony at all, it's ONLY about Pioneer.
Wake up, fanboys; you're living in a dreamworld.
"Pioneer said it still had no "concrete" plans for a European launch, but believed the January 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Blu-ray makers hope to offer movie-players in bulk, would "lay the ground" for a Europe launch." - mvnicosia, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15"No more bad news Sony! Waaaaa!"
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6uh, steppawho. If none of those companies hold any weight, I'd really like to know who does.
or were you being sarcastic? - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hard to see where a situation that leaves Sony holding all the Blu-Ray diodes is a case where SONY has a problem. Or even Blu-Ray for that matter, given the market share for $1k Blu-Ray players is probably going to be kind of low compared with $500 PS3's.
Now if you'd said goodbye Toshiba... well that wouldn't make any sense either. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Oops i dugg u down by accident some1 digg this guy for me (if you click really fast you can get 3 diggs ;)
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes but Sony also has the ultr-popular Wega and Bravia displays, not to mention the uber-successful PS2. Well actually perhaps it should be mentioned becaue the divsion that currently has by far the greatest sucess within the company is in fact the one coming out with the PS3.
Sony has a lot of divisions and you are making a pretty big mistake lumping them all together. I wouldn't buy water in the Sahara from Sony Music, but I have no problem buying a PS3. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10That's the thing, by early 07 there will be at least 5 million Blu-ray players in homes all over the world. There won't be that many HD-DVD players, not even close.
On top of that the software is similarly priced so I don't see that being a factor.
Plus, by the time HD-DVD players that are capable of outputting 1080p are on the market the (already) 1080p capable Blu-ray players should be priced more competitively.
I honestly don't give a ***** which one wins, I just want it over with. I'm just pointing out that a few month delay is not going to topple Sony, or Blu-ray for that matter. - Elen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think digg should implement a feature where all articles that link to theinquirer.net get automatically labeled with "Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate"
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Go short on Sony if you believe what you say. Good luck with that.
