- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+41I know a few people that lost their Sony Connect Internet Radio jobs today. They were all passionate music fans, and did their best to bring quality music to the people. I first learned about Mew, Silversun Pickups, Tunng, We Are Scientists and a handful of other solid bands, all because the programming staff made great efforts to bring exposure to lesser-known artists where possible. They were not the ones responsible for making the tracks ATRAC. They are not the ones responsible for Sony's on-the-whole archaic approach to monetizing music. Some conservative, out-of-touch executives in a different division of a company can spoil the party for young, forward thinking, adventurous spirits. Things aren't always just black and white with the music biz... So yes, I heard it, and yes, It made a sound.
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24I'd like to buy a vowel
- jeff303, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Sadly, good people are often employed at bad companies.
- ronmexico, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Me fail English? That's unpossible.
- gothsquirrel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Check out the somafm indie pop rock station if you like that kind of music. Thats where i found them and practically every band i listen to now. It's sad that people with that god of taste lost they're jobs but there is still that quality of music out there if you know where to look.
- ZiggityZhang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"Sony's SonicStage software and older hardware will continue to support ATRAC, but the company says that those who purchased DRMed ATRAC content should rip the music to CD and then re-rip it to MP3 if they want it to play on the new Walkmans."
Wow, so that means that the few ppl who actually bought ATRAC music have to degrade the quality to even use their own purchase. Defective by design indeed. - gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Glad I saw this, I was about to buy the Sony E Reader that depends on it's proprietary format and software. They may decide they aren't really cut out for the book business either.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This was announced months ago. They're moving the Sony Connect people over to the PSN and basically re-setting up the Sony Connect store as a part of the Playstation Network.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Thats a over estimation.
- fernB, on 10/10/2007, -8/+11I wonder how many copies of Queen's "Another one Bites the Dust" they sold?
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Blu ray isn't proprietary. Is google that hard to use?
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't say that! I want that thing to succeed. Its a neat little gadget. If was only it was $50 and not $150...
- maxhrk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3probably because of rootkit.... tech-savvy people dont trust sony to have sony's music on their computer. Also.. i havent heard of Sony connect until now.... prehap it just me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3God. why would you want that ***** on the PS3. Replacing one form of drm with another is retarded.
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Neither have I actually...no Idea what this article was about (as usual the title didn't help much).
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've never heard of Sony Connect Internet Radio. Sorry about your friends, but if no one is listening, its easy for the execs to chop heads.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I got a bunch of 5$ certificates when it first came out. The software was so buggy, I couldn't get it to run.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Memory stick is far from being dead. Sony built a whole eco system around it and it can survive on its own without third party support. L2Business
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think that's just an incentive, but It's hard not to be nervous about the E reader it's really expensive and a niche product. I want one bad but I have been burned on so may Sony formats I am embarrassed to say.
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You're absoloutely right...HD DVD is so much more well DVD like...if you ask someone if they have any HD movies to play on their HD tvs using their HD players (regardless of whether this is a Bluray or HD-DVD player)...wouldn't the average Joe think to himself.."hmm I think I'll get a HD DVD to play on my system". I think the name is going to throw a LOT of people off.
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yay, another shining example of why DRM is a bad idea. I feel sorry for all those poor souls who actually bought DRM music from Sony and now have to go through the hassle of burning and ripping (and probably retagging). Not to mention the quality loss in the process.
I hope this and Google's paid video service are a good example to the people who buy this crap. - abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3ur a douche
- rstrb8r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2More blood on the click wheel for Apple…
- noksagt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2They have announced that they Sony Connect will continue to sell ebooks after the music part closes. The competition isn't as strong in the eBook market.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer at CES today: "Sales of downloadable e-books are exceeding the sales of music on Sony's online Connect Store."
That being said: DRM does suck. However, the US version of the reader can work with PDF, TXT, RTF, JPG, and PNG ouf-of-the-box - jman82s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1D'oh. Yes, of course. Teh brew.....teh brew...
- awgn, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0The Blu-Ray format is not owned by Sony. They are simply a partner in the technology. Also Blu-Ray sales more than double the sales of HD-DVD making it the dominant HD format on the market today with studios such as Sony, Disney, Warner Bros, Fox, Lionsgate and MGM backing it. Currently the only major studios that support HD-DVD are Universal and Paramount. Warner Bros. currently produes both formats.
- dwninjungleland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2...great.
i just installed it last night.
pwned.ps. sony connect sucks. - MalDON, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3PS3 is no where near a good value.
- atb12688, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I just yawn/cried it was great.
- luminique, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1RTFA - the e-book store isn't going anywhere. Also read above a few - they've been making more money off books than music for a while now.
- jman82s, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3May I be the first to say, "Good riddance to bad rubbish"? I'd say they pretty much dugg their own grave on this one. My father bought a 512 kB Sony Mp3 player a couple years ago, only to find that he couldn't even put his existing music on it. If he wanted to hear HIS tunes, he'd have to repurchase the music.
Hasta luego, Sony Connect. I'm sure you will not be missed. - TheRealDj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I'm predicting Sony's going to be launching a new movie/music download service for the PS3 which will extend to a PC download service as well. By retiring the current Sony store, it could be a sign of their launching an entirely new service.
- eunosx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1So that's why dealnews had the Sony eBook Reader deal going today..Guess those who jumped on it just better claim those free ebooks quick
http://dealnews.com/deals/Sony-e-Book-Reader-for-50-w-Sony-Card-sign-up-100-e-Books-for-free/185152.html - cs188, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I believe you mean 512 MB, not KB. ;)
512 KB could hold maybe a fraction of a song. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4If you think sony is evil then you are a retard.
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2This is why you should be cautious when you consider purchasing *any* DRM-laden media: usually, when they shut the servers down, you lose your purchases. It's happened at least 3 times now: google shut down their video sales site, microsoft shut down their pre-zune music marketplace, and now Sony.
- Obsession88, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3At least maybe now we can get iTunes on the PS3.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5the problem was they charged too little.
the value was too great, like the PS3.
they should have charged $3200 per song
like their Bravia line. - SantaClauz, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Oh sorry, I was under the impression that BluRay and HD DVD were equal on the user friendly scale. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but to me, it sounds like a case of fanboyism ;-)
- bakatrinh, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Sony Connect is the name of a dog?
- Cherubim, on 10/10/2007, -13/+6They should euthanize Blu-ray next.
Sony will never learn - proprietary products and consumer-unfriendly technology will never prevail. - Cygnus, on 10/10/2007, -13/+5I await the day Sony euthanizes Blu-Ray. It's coming...
- asskicker32, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1buried as dupe
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Who cares? Really, if nobody noticed, who really cares?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+31 evil company out .... _ _ _ _ _ _ _left to go
