- BigManOnCampus, on 10/01/2008, -2/+42Wow...
You could almost read that as...
"Smoking is the reason I have lung cancer, but I won't be quitting."
"Masturbation is one of the main reasons I'm still lonely, but I won't be cutting that out of my life."
"Horrible music is one of the main reasons people don't want to pay $20 a cd, but we won't be changing our business operation to distribute higher quality art."
They truly just want to continue with business as usual, even though they know their business model and slow reactions to a changing environment are dooming them. Die Dinosaur, Die. - JMilton, on 10/01/2008, -2/+41"McMahon further said that DRM is one of the major causes of piracy, but says Sony doesn’t have any plans to get rid of it."
WTF?! - jos22, on 10/01/2008, -6/+41Sony seems to hate their customers . DRM increases piracy their solution more DRM.
SONY is an abbreviation for
Shower
OF
NAZI
YOBS
(SONY) - OwdenBowden, on 10/02/2008, -0/+29Woo. Wait a minute. Hold on buddy - Leave Masturbation out of this. You are Never lonely when masturbating.
- Spawn2105, on 10/02/2008, -2/+23FTA: "ISPs worldwide are refusing to cooperate, mainly because they feel such actions violate the privacy of their customers."
Thank God these ISP's are still on our side (for now at least).
***** Sony - Dagreenman, on 10/02/2008, -1/+20the war on piracy is getting more and more like the war on drugs.
- spudfrog, on 10/02/2008, -1/+19Are they serious??? Have they forgotten the Memorystick, UMD, or BETAMAX? They'll never win with proprietary formats, and they'll never win with DRM.
- jos22, on 10/01/2008, -1/+18actually that was also my post
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -5/+20Sony makes utter garbage, why do they even think they are relevant any longer?
- theaverageidiot, on 10/01/2008, -1/+16@jakash: jos22/josis. i'd say same person.
- Nathrat, on 10/01/2008, -3/+18Sony is just bleeding money lately. Does anything they make generate a profit for them right now, or are they still living off of PS2 money?
- whahaa, on 10/02/2008, -1/+14***** SONY
- mattearle, on 10/02/2008, -2/+14I wouldn't say they are on our side. In this case, what benefits them happens to be what benefits us. Without piracy they would just be a boring commodity business.
- InspectorGadget, on 10/02/2008, -2/+14Hey Sony: I bought one of YOUR laptops, discarded YOUR ***** software, and now use YOUR hardware to rip copies of Blu-ray discs produced by YOUR subsidiary Columbia. You fail at preventing piracy. Get the ***** out.
- barryiggins, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12whoa whoa whoa... I don't see why masturbation deserves to be dragged into this discussion
Edit: OwdenBowden beat me to it (no pun intended). However, the point still stands! - Zippo, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12If your treat your customers like thieves, the customers are going to treat you in the same manner.
***** off. - Mankrik, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12Headline: Sony Urges ISPs to commit suicide.
- chivesandbonbon, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11If DRM is a major cause of piracy according to Sony, and they have no plans to get rid of it. Then Sony loves, wants and is actively promoting piracy.
- DestroyFascism, on 10/02/2008, -2/+12Dear Sony. I won't pay for DRM laced music / Video. I also refuse to help a smartass retailer "who could not care otherwise" pay their rent thus paying a premium for Retail CD..
Why would I do that when here I can save $28 and eat for three days... - phoomp, on 10/02/2008, -3/+12yet, you still bought one of their laptops ...
- bigfatphony19, on 10/02/2008, -1/+9Say goodbye to PSP sales...
- pigfister, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8Not surprising seems that Sony are one of the most outspoken of both the RIAA and MPAA.
RIAA, SOUNDEXCHANGE, BPI, IFPI, Ect:
# Sony BMG Music Entertainment
# Warner Music Group
# Universal Music Group
# EMI
MPAA:
# Sony Pictures
# Warner Bros. (Time Warner)
# Universal Studios (NBC Universal)
# The Walt Disney Company
# 20th Century Fox (News Corporation)
# Paramount Pictures Viacom—(DreamWorks owners since February 2006) - phoomp, on 10/02/2008, -1/+9People download good music, games and movies because the content owners charge more than people perceive their value to be.
Piracy of Microsoft Office dropped dramatically when Microsoft introduced the Home and Student version at a massively reduced price over the corporate version.
Piracy of Photoshop dropped dramatically when Adobe introduced Photoshop Elements (which does what most people were using pirated Photoshop to do) at a massively reduced price over Photoshop.
Stop gouging the people, and the people will stop pirating. - icndvl, on 10/02/2008, -1/+8I will not buy another Sony product again.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/02/2008, -2/+9Hey Sony - we urge you to start making video games and stay they ***** away from DRM.
- mobling, on 10/02/2008, -1/+8If you find yourself unable to purchase that CD that is published by Sony, then I guess you deserve all the crap they can dish out to you. It is so SIMPLE.....STOP purchasing their crap. Ever since the Sony root kit exploit, I made a decision to never purchase any product manufactured by Sony. Zip, Nada, Nothing and yet the world still revolves. Yes indeed I would like to purchase that nice shiny black VAIO pc, but I know what is behind it. Every time I look at their nice shinny new product, I remember their slimy root kit and "Just Say No." Only you have the power to stop them. Just think of the power you have available as a end consumer. NO SONY
- crownedgriffin, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Also, it would take time and money on their part to act as the internet police.
- TheMachine1, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Is this the same Sony that installed a root kit on my computer?
- BXRWXR, on 10/02/2008, -1/+7Well Sony and Mr. John McMahon can kiss my ass.
Screw you and your "battle against piracy". - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6because celling cat is always watching you.
- diabolicedict, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6"McMahon further said that DRM is one of the major causes of piracy, but says Sony doesn’t have any plans to get rid of it."
Yea, because they are just renaming it to "Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE)". Personally, I'll just boycott Sony's stuff. - zeabu, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5But internet-piracy doesn't kill people.
- sampson123, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6Getting rid of DRM isn't something any major movie or game companies are seriously considering.
- dstxx, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4In the case of the RADIOHEAD album: If it's free, why does the distribution method matter?
Because you receive it directly from the artist, how does downloading from your favorite torrent site any different? If anything, wouldn't this help the artist by offsetting bandwidth costs associated with digital album distribution?
You've raised some good points, but I don't understand the logic in your argument. - FredFredrickson, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Why are you guys so surprised about Sony pushing DRM and anti-piracy? You're the ones who helped them make Blu-ray, a bastion of DRM, successful. It's your fault they get away with this horse *****.
- latrosicarius, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5This, and numerous cases of very bad customer service experience in the past, is why I do not purchase anything from Sony (or any of their affiliates where possible).
- mbtria, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5Don't traffic with members of the RIAA or MPAA. If you have to have their wares, buy them used.
- DeFex, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Sony has hardware DRM as well. once your warranty is done, so is your POS electronic toy.
- javaroast, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Here's why. The article is about a speech by the President of Sony Pictures Television. They are now in the process of attempting to introduce DECE which is another DRM plan. From everything I've seen about DECE, it will require DECE compatible hardware... which means replacing your existing hardware.

Your links are all in regards to their music division and not relevant to the article. But why should I be surprised about a comment on digg where the poster didn't RTFA. - Harrison88, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4Come on Sony. Do you realise how difficult it is for me to be a fanboi when you continue to do things like this?!
- whahaa, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4for reference, the main music companies to avoid are SONY, EMI, WARNER and UNIVERSAL
- alex7575, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4The truth is.... you have no idea why people hate DRM.
- staticneuron, on 10/02/2008, -5/+8The truth is.... its all a line of bull anyway. People still pirate good music, people still download good movies, people still download good games.
This so called war against DRM has always been an excuse. The problem is that the DRM got worse in some cases to combat pirates which just leaves regular customers who don't DL content of choice or DRM in the middle of it all. - lornefs, on 10/02/2008, -3/+6Finally we hear from the CEO of Sony.
- alex7575, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4You have no idea why people hate DRM, AND you have no idea the difference between stealing and pirating.
Software has nothing to do with DRM? DRM is implemented by software, a lot of software has DRM built in, do you know what serial numbers are?
"that the perceived value of consumers is the correct one.". I feel that my work is worth more than $75/hr, but if I charge more my clients will drop me. Do you even know what your shiny Skyline GTR costs to make? and what the margins are on that car?
Also where were you when DRM server got shutdown and millions of songs are going unplayed now because they can't phone home? - FredFredrickson, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Masturbation is part of any healthy person's life. There's nothing wrong with it. Don't lump it into this mess just because your medieval religious views tell you to, alright?
- zeabu, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2That's about every music-company.
- Tenoq, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Pixelante - you let your mum watch too?
- ATLien74, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2What's a Yob???
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3Because anon must keep track of its enemies, and anon reeds digg.
