- allanstrings, on 01/05/2008, -3/+25if you think Apple doesn't make any money off the iTunes store you're crazy...
- HappyScrappy, on 01/05/2008, -0/+22As a clarification, MUSIC DRM appears to be dead. Which is a cause for joy, but just the first step in this war.
- randovaro, on 01/05/2008, -2/+13chachabyi is correct in that Apple make no real money off the iTMS. Yes, it certainly operates "above breakeven" but the real profits are in iPod/iPhone sales, and the iTMS undoubtedly helps drive those sales. Also, Steve Jobs' open letter (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/) proposes that only a very small proportion of a typical iPod's song list is actually sourced via the iTMS. So Apple don't really care where you get your music, as long as you buy an iPod/iPhone to listen to it!
- actorboy, on 01/05/2008, -1/+11No, Apple makes money off touring and t-shirt sales.
- CanadianGuy, on 01/05/2008, -5/+12Consumers have always had a choice of DRM free music, its called the Compact Disc maybe you have heard of it.
- nicheplayer, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6"valuable download revenues"
Oh, so they're valuable now? I wonder who the genius was who finally figured out how to successfully monetize music downloads to a broad audience. I wonder who that could have been. Hmm. Let's see. Could it be...SATAN (Jobs)? - bdbr, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6"For major label artists, Apple collects 34 cents and the label keeps 55 cents."
..according to the National Association of Record Industry Professionals.

Yes, Apple's making good money off of iTunes. They just don't feel like its much because its not the 200% markup that they're used to. - actorboy, on 01/05/2008, -1/+7Sony is part of the RIAA, asswipe.
- DiFosfor, on 01/05/2008, -2/+8Wow.. miracles _can_ happen
- baldgye, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4this still wont kill off DRM
- duffblue, on 01/05/2008, -4/+8Why is he being buried?
- HanSolo69, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4Dude spelled "drum" wrong in that picture. He must feel like a jackass.
- duffblue, on 01/05/2008, -1/+5Buried for false sense of superiority.
- duffblue, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4Because every cd ever released has a rootkit on it.
- aldableep3, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2lol.. nice one
- mrmousepotato, on 01/06/2008, -0/+280% of vista is about drm. when videos follow, as they will, will that not make vista even more irrelevant?
- actorboy, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3How mature of the parent to regurgitate an opinion on an organization he knows nothing about. "I hate the RIAA because someone told me to!"
- bgth021, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I work for bertelsmann. I hope this don't mean my job.
- griz, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2If they were so concerned with getting their music on the iPod they would still be dealing with Apple.
- Amazetbm, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3Actually Apple can make up to 30% off an iTunes sale, when you purchase a whole album. Record label still get the lions share of the purchase. But if an artist doesn't not have a provision in their contract for digital distribution, they get zero. If they were not behind the scenes like Hollywood writers, they're probably be on strike too.
- ps1locyd3, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2bout time the music industry started to realize DRM is not effective in preventing piracy. If somebody wants a particular song or movie, they WILL get it one way or another. Sadly this is just the first step in a long walk towards a better industry.
- Renton, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Don't buy CDs from Sony. Problem solved.
- dignick, on 01/05/2008, -5/+6Because fighting Apple for revenues has worked in the past...
- guitargeekny, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1holy cow...finally!!
- bitspace, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2Apple makes very little money from ITMS sales. For music the most they make is $.10/song, and much less for many of them. While that's not a tiny amount of money overall, it does pale compared to the profits from the iPod.
- chookalana, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2let's be honest. This is yet another win for Apple. All these other companies have to sell their music so their music will play on the iPod. So what if iTunes has competition? Steve knew the music companies didn't like the fact that iTunes had all the power. So he spearheaded the no more DRM campaign to further drive sales of the iPod. So you buy your music some other place. You still have to bring it in iTunes in the end.
- bdbr, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1This issue is about the swiftly growing paid download market, not the shrinking CD market. I see no reason to pretend you don't know that.
- Renton, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Vista is bundled with every new PC. I really don't think it matters.
- jbond, on 01/06/2008, -0/+12008. The year that Apple announces that iTMS is 100% DRM free?
- mthoringen, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Most people probably look to video as the next battle, but I think eBooks ought to be. Decryption tools are already widely available for DRM-ed video; not so for eBooks.
If eBooks were sold DRM-free, I'd buy lots of them; probably a Kindle too. In fact, I'd be happy to pay to duplicate my existing book collection, expensive though it would be; portable access to my entire library would be super-valuable. I think we'd be in a golden age of eBooks already were it not for this DRM nonsense.
Amazon, wake up! You're seeing first-hand what's happening with music. Be a pioneer here, instead of crippling your own products! - CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0Hopefully it will give it a serious setback as far as music is concerned. I agree that DRM as a whole is here for "a while yet" though :(
- gigitrix, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1I think it has to be said.
Yay!
Finally DRM hits the dust. - CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0Excellent news. The mistake the companies made was seeing what the consumer wanted with the popularity of napster back in the day, and then providing their own bastardised version of it that was riddled with DRM. The result? The consumer continued to get what they want from illegal sources.
- RenoKb, on 01/05/2008, -1/+0So you propose that the music industry does not care about getting their music on the player with the most market share and mind-share?
Going with Amazon (which deals in mp3s) over something like DRM-free WMAs from Napster or what-not shows that they'd like a format compatible with the iPod over one that is not. - mrcoffeepc, on 01/05/2008, -2/+1This is what happens when the people stand up and say NO.
- sjmulder, on 01/05/2008, -8/+7Rootkit Disc? Yes I've heard of that.
- kris33, on 01/05/2008, -2/+1This is not true, DRM on music is unfortunately not dead. Universal only sells around 10% of their catalog without DRM. The 90% left are still only available with DRM.
- Drizzit, on 01/05/2008, -4/+2This is complete BS. Why are all the labels siding with Amazon's crappy music sales system? iTunes has 80% of the player market. This stinks of collusion to shut Apple out of the market. They should be forced like media companies to sell their music to any provider (Cable Companies)..
Wake up people! This is the next Internet Exploder/Netscape battle. - jbenson2, on 01/05/2008, -13/+10Sony is never getting a dime from me. After their screwed-up BMG root kit virus attempt, there is nothing they can say or do that will let me trust them again.
- Christbait, on 01/05/2008, -6/+3Sony Defense Force
- Kragnerac, on 01/05/2008, -5/+2Let's see how the tyranny that is the RIAA handles this.
- CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -6/+0How mature of you to offer a stupid insult with your fact correction. Buried as childish.
- km6847, on 01/05/2008, -7/+0Nice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPD3biqvPAw - chachabyi, on 01/05/2008, -12/+5what these labels don't seem to realize is that Apple makes no real money off of the iTunes store.. they make money off of iPods. Apple could care less where you got your music from. people don't buy iPods to but music from iTunes.
