- protogenxl, on 04/16/2008, -2/+85Yes, It sadly does not whip the lama's ass.
- LANjackal, on 04/16/2008, -5/+86It's a good direction, but terribly buggy with a half-assed implementation
- ztiworoh, on 04/16/2008, -5/+53I have the feeling songbird would seem more "legit" if it didnt look so much like a recolored iTunes
- cryptomystic, on 04/16/2008, -5/+34Sorry but the new Winamp blows it out of the water.
- KINGGS, on 04/16/2008, -0/+27I'm pretty sure every thing does.
- bassoondux, on 04/16/2008, -0/+20Tried it, but switched back to iTunes. I'm still holding out for Amarok for Windows.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 04/16/2008, -1/+20Dude you're an idiot. You use linux and you think songbird is better than amarok?
- MillionsLivio, on 04/16/2008, -8/+26I'll stick with Winamp.
- geoken, on 04/16/2008, -2/+17Please include a theme (aka. feather) which uses the default system style, widgets, window border, etc.
- kev009, on 04/16/2008, -2/+16I ran Songbird on my Windows laptop for a while after being a big Amarok fan for the past few years. I came to the conclusion that not only is the idea of a heavy-weight platform and browser (XULRunner) for a media player lethargic and slow, the implementation was terrible and the player failed to master even the basics such as proper ID3 tag support, low memory usage, and stability.
The idea is novel, but for now I'm using foobar2000 on the Windows laptop and continuing to love Amarok on Linux. Hopefully with Amarok 2, the best audio app can spread to Windows and Mac as well. QT 4.4 with Webkit should give Amarok the ability to do all that Songbird can as well, and hopefully a lot more efficiently. - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -1/+15hate these media players that are 10x too big... I'll gladly stick with Foobar2000...
- Monkeywithacold, on 04/16/2008, -1/+14thats what people said about internet browsers when firefox was coming out...
- Muncher, on 04/17/2008, -2/+14Foobar2000 is amazing. But open-source software in general is usually excellent.
- jonohull, on 04/17/2008, -3/+14Who ACTUALLY needs a visualizer?
- terriblelie, on 04/16/2008, -1/+12Too bad it runs like ass and locks up when attempting to add media from my external HDD.
- EvilAirman, on 04/16/2008, -4/+14I tried it because it seemed interesting, real buggy, and I rarely am in the mood to go out and FIND new music, it usually finds me! I think its better that way. If you like this idea, check out Miro it rocks, its like a RSS video aggregater.
- jpjandrade, on 04/17/2008, -0/+10Amarok? Anyone?
- bulio, on 04/17/2008, -1/+11Another vote for Foobar2000. Its lightweight and does what i need already. No need to add any useless bloat, I just need something that plays music!
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+9Just what I need, 2 firefox browsers eating up all my ram...
- stevobengtson, on 04/17/2008, -0/+9People seem to forget that this is only version 0.5, remember what all those other apps were like in the first beta versions? yeah, try looking at the whole picture when you judge something. I am not saying that Songbird is the best player out there but it is striving to be one of the best. Look at the features it is going for, extensibility, skin as you want, play what you want from where you want, your choice of media stores, and access to music/video blogs right in the player. I like Amarok and Winamp as well but I don't like being told what OS I have to use and that I can only play my music on some computers/players. Give me choice, give me freedom, give me Songbird.
- gandhii, on 04/17/2008, -1/+10it is still very much alpha... not mention being a "half" version
- damndj, on 04/17/2008, -1/+9no u
- Bkaufman, on 04/16/2008, -1/+9Winamp is just fine for me.
- gandhii, on 04/17/2008, -2/+8it would if it didn't run only on windows...
- JamesBrown, on 04/17/2008, -3/+9try the Linux version. No streaming. And massive memory/CPU usage. And incredibly slow! And buggy! And crashy! YAY!
Songbird has a lot of promise, but it has a long way to go before I'd consider it a usable app, and development has been very very slow. - slothlovechunk, on 04/16/2008, -17/+23I'm really happy with foobar2000.
I don't know about everyone else, but these days, to me, "Open Source" usually means software I don't want to use. Seems like the only open source software that I like better than closed source stuff is firefox. I do like open source development tools, but open source software applications usually are second-place at best. - thtroyer, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6Songbird is not typical of Linux software. IMO, there are numerous other Linux media players I would take over Songbird.
For starters, try Rhythmbox or Amarok. Next: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linux_media_ ... (warning -- not all are GUI media players) - Jyaif, on 04/16/2008, -3/+9it would be more legit if it didn't suck that much
- fishrjv, on 04/17/2008, -1/+7I'm waiting for Amarok to be officially released for Windows
- Nestor10, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5You are one.
- Monkeywithacold, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5Eh, asking how good foobar is mostly, though I wasn't really asking...Just posting.
Actually, in light of this thread I installed foobar and am importing my music this very second. - sgtawol, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5Is it slimmer than the current Winamp?
Anyone else really miss the small-ish footprint of Winamp 2? - JamesBrown, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5after 2 years in development and they're only at .5? So it might finally be usable by 2010? I can hardly wait.
- Sabretou, on 04/17/2008, -3/+8Amarok blows them both out of the water and drains it, just in case.
- iofthestorm, on 04/17/2008, -2/+7Winamp joke, it went right over your head... unless you were calling him a llama.
- KINGGS, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5Wow man, I look for new music daily. Some days I get nothing, other days I end up finding a future favourite. I have a set of blogs I go & a few music sites, if they mention someone who I don't know I will go to Allmusicguide & look them up.
- SSCrow, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4reading this article makes me love Winamp even more.
Most of their features already exist within Winamp and its so light on the resources while offering tons of function & features. - Kahlnen, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4The good thing about Foobar is it's (VERY) lightweight and easily modable.
- slackerxpc, on 04/17/2008, -2/+6It looks like a cheesy black iTunes skin... lame
- sherif2, on 04/17/2008, -2/+6WINAMP is king. Why would Songbird developers design their interface to look I-Tunish? I like having music stored in regular folders, and double-clicking them to play them in Win-Amp.
- yfph, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4I installed a previous version of this over a year ago while trying to find a solution to itunes, which choked on my 40k+ library. I cannot say that I was impressed with it performance-wise. So far, only mediamonkey has been nimble enough to handle my large library and conduct any queries without slowing my laptop down to a crawl (1.5G memory, P4). Just my 2c
- svivian, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3Amarok FTW!
- estvir, on 04/17/2008, -1/+4It's slow for me both on Vista and Ubuntu. There is no reason why a music playing program should be slow on the hardware I have.
- geoken, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3Most people don't. It's why we use meta data based music library browsers.
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -2/+5Put this back on the frontpage when it WORKS.
- raintheory, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3http://www.oldversion.com/
- renegadeafk, on 04/17/2008, -1/+4I think they are trying to imitate itunes too closely, even performs just as bad.
- Kratos76, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3Dang. This Sh#t is OLD. I remember installing Songbird (yes the same one) Years ago, on my old computer!
- gandhii, on 04/17/2008, -1/+4songbird is getting there... but amarok is still better.
- thtroyer, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3um... might you mean gmusicbrowser? http://squentin.free.fr/gmusicbrowser/gmusicbrowse ...
