- StuWendall, on 03/30/2009, -4/+29It's amazing how seriously some people take those sites. It's all pretty much vanity.
- socoolisme, on 03/31/2009, -2/+22Is it just me or does anyone else think our society is getting too connected?
- GameMogul, on 03/31/2009, -1/+17Yeah, because none of us subscribe to any social-networking, Web 2.0 apps...
"Digg is a ***SOCIAL*** news website made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet..." --Wikipedia (emphasis mine) - FrankDrebbin, on 03/31/2009, -0/+15But they do not have genuine connections. Clicking accept to someone's friend's request doesn't build genuine connections where one accepts a person because you care about them. It doesn't give one a meaningful relationship where trust, personality or caring are important.....
it gives us Tia Tequila.
Society, if anything, is becoming disconnected. Throwing away real interactions because they can be difficult and involve awkwardness for these phony relationships built on the click of a button. - shoppingkart, on 03/31/2009, -0/+13(Typical S/N Conversation)
Me: sup
Friend: nothing much, you?
Me: same
(6 months later)
Me: haven't talked to you in a while, what's up?
Friend: nothing much, you?
Me: same - mickaloha, on 03/31/2009, -1/+12Tell me more about this Japanese hot spa.
- n0ah420, on 03/31/2009, -0/+11FTA: "Baym completed research on Last.fm, a niche site that connects fans of similar music. She found that online friendships based on common taste in music tended to be more fragile, although people also used the site to maintain closer relationships.I find the connection between.."
I fail to see how studying last.fm is the same as studying Facebook. - NothingSoldier, on 03/31/2009, -0/+10I thought that this was pretty obvious. I have 165 friends on Facebook (which in comparison is very low) but I wouldn't consider 80% of them friends.
- nanexo, on 03/30/2009, -4/+14some friends of mine ar so addicted to Fb its like their scond life ...sad
- Cyclone83, on 03/31/2009, -0/+9I see younger people spend hours and hours and hours on sites like facebook, it's pretty obnoxious. I understand that it can be a useful app for finding old friends or staying in touch with people, but beyond that it's largely a waste of time. Go have some fun with real people or do something that doesn't make you dumb. My opinion. Of course, I realize I'm on Digg as I'm typing this...
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -11/+19Great minds talk about ideas. Average minds talk about events. Small minds talk about people and stare at other people's photos on Facebook.
- RoboDonut, on 03/31/2009, -0/+7Sometimes I think the average person trusts technology too much. At least the technically-minded have an understanding of how overwhelmingly convoluted and treacherous it can be.
- ThantiK, on 03/31/2009, -0/+7I see teenagers every day squabble over who removed who from who's friends list. Or who "hacked" into who's myspace account so they could "spy" on them. I even here them quibble over a picture getting removed, a parent finding out that they had unprotected sex with 10 guys last night because so-and-so put it on their myspace....and that persons myspace was linked via friends to someone elses myspace that was freely viewable.
I REALLY hate myspace/facebook and all this other tween social crap. Its not like this hasn't been available before. Back in my day, we had forums, and pictures on those forums were limted to 30x30, both ways, uphill....in the snow. And we liked it.
Get off my lawn. - ctour95, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5I only use FaceBook to keep in touch with college friends now that we've all graduated. I haven't made the mistake of just going for large numbers of friends that I don't really know, which seems to be the big thing on MySpace and Twitter. I guess it all depends on how you use the site...
- heystellah, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Wow this article was all over the place. First it's filed under Health, interviews a professor from the University of Kansas who uses Last.fm as a model for explaining general social networks, and then the journalist continues to state the obvious throughout. Did I just read news?
- DrHoliday, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Always something new?
...like Digg?
*twitches and clicks refresh on Digg newsfeed* - commentposted, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Dugg for accuracy.
- duggdowncatisad, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4You mean the people with 500 Facebook friends don't actually have 500 friends?
- riceyrice, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4seriously, go out and live life. Don't just 'network' about it.
- Elranzer, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Your "business?" Are you an escort or something?
- spgass, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4I'm a holdout and still haven't signed up for Facebook. I've thought about, but have no immediate plans to join. Friendster->Myspace->Facebook... will Facebook last or will there be some next new site down the road?

buried - metamethod, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3it depends if the number of friends exceeds dunbar's number a.k.a the monkeysphere
- Gndoab, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4I wasn't aware that minds had shapes or sizes...
- jefree, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Yeah, distracted me while reading too.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3that things looks coed...interesting
- mixsense, on 03/31/2009, -2/+5I know I'll get dugg down but I'm so sick of digg's general attitude towards Facebook and Facebook users. Yes fair enough there are people who use it to pose and whatnot but I can guarantee that a majority of people who bitch about it on here use it regularly. Besides who cares how your friends use it. You don't have to use it so complaining about it while using it makes you look like a bigger dick than your vain friends. By 'you' I'm actually referring to everyone who gives it ***** that uses it.
- Fruit45, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3What you say is true. Although you may want to watch what you say, some people think and act small-mindedly.
- kalvinb, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3I don't use Digg to make friends. The purpose of facebook is to connect to people and make friends. Digg is for submitting news stories and reading comments by essentially random people. The social aspect of digg is secondary to the primary purpose which is find stories that people like. Most of the interaction with the site is done by clicking buttons to say you like a story or not. Not by communicating with people.
- riceyrice, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Judgment day will be announced by a tweet:
"simulation complete" - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Cause people in FB or myspace will meet their 100000 friends in real life.
- Voide, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2You just replied to your reply to your comment.
- scarlettletter, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Virtual world is starting become real! How sad.
- HonoredMule, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Wow, who knew your dad was a person and had friends too? What is this world coming to?
- HOWLAN, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Sounds good to me.
- neillawson, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2This is how I roll
- suzanek, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2really sad...btw what do your friends do?
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Obviously.
- lornali, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Social networking is for virtual friends
- jasonstock, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2i use digg to laugh at the liberals pathetic attempts at spin against conservatives. My favorites are Keith Olberman is better than bill o reilly posts
- itsmikey, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Article tries to put some dumb spin on the research.
- levity90, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2uh..***** yea.
- jordantneff, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2What happens when you do all three on a regular basis?
- shokfer, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Jesus might have beef with this article.... and I'm guessing so would his "top" 12 friends. I'm just sayin'
- HonoredMule, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1"IT" (the internet) has been real since its inception.
/facepalm
Incidentally, I also have been real since the internet's inception...indeed since my own inception (which predates the internet). - Whorebane, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1The only thing sadder is when second life becomes your facebook.
- utnow, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Personally I recommend most people perform a massive purge of these systems on a regular basis.
After college I found I was left with hundreds of "friends" who were people I used to know... but had moved on from. We didn't share anything in common anymore. There's a reason people drift apart.
You can spend your entire day figuring out what every person you ever knew was doing...
Or you can purge to just the people you actually know and communicate with on a regular basis and sites like Facebook and Twitter suddenly become immensely useful. - HonoredMule, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Then by nature of diversity, you excel at nothing, relegating you to the 'average' category. Alternatively, you are simply an average mind that has befriended other minds both great and small.
- gryphon50, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1sending someone an online mixed drink does not constitute a connection.
- HonoredMule, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1I has been real since its inception.
virtual ⇒ intangible
!(virtual ⇒ pretend/imaginary)
What is sad is thinking that the internet is some special phenomenon to social interaction...as if it were not previously already laden with virtual characteristics like remote communication, embarrassment, memory, or intent.
Anywhere that 'virtual' interaction truly differs from interaction within a shared physical realm, the root cause is anonymity or level of perceived anonymity, not the 'realness' of the communication or participants. -
