- NiteShok, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I've been using LastFM since 2004, back in the Audioscrobbler days. I seriously love the site and visit it regularly to pore over my listening habits. If you're an avid music fan who often listens while in front of a computer, there is no reason why you shouldn't have a LastFM profile. Two thumbs up. Visit niteshok.com for an example - it redirects to my profile.
- ijacker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Mmm... Scrobbles!
C'mon, you all love to say it!
Repeat after me: Scrobbles!
See, wasn't that fun? - matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20I tried pandora for a little while, but soon realised that I didn't want to listen to music that sounded LIKE a Deathcab for Cutie, I actually wanted to listen TO deathcab for cutie. - and then I stopped listening.
also the OS X Widget is lame. - arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm really happy that music has been able to thrive in the social Web 2.0 revolution. This really is the place that it should be. And this is exactly why we no longer need big music labels or the R*AA anymore. Since people can produce music and get it out to the masses by means of the internet and sites such as these, it really shows that artists can now be in full control of their work and still be able to make a living.
Case in point: I received a number of iTunes Gift Cards for christmas, but had no idea at the time what i wanted to buy. One night while surfing the net, i happened to be listening to Pandora, and found 4 bands that i had never heard of, and went to iTunes and bought their albums right then. - bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I've been using Last.fm for about two months, most of the time it is really working well. Then out of left field it hits me with some crazy ass song that makes me really wonder how their algorithms work. Thank goodness for the ban/skip function.
I haven't tried the others much, but one of Last.fm's real strengths for me is finding new bands similar to what I already like but are really obscure. - Depraved, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I love Pandora. It takes a little while to get your station tuned just right, but after that it's pure awesome.
- Hamman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I had actually only heard of Last.fm(which I use) and Pandora before, so this list was an interesting read.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8My favorite to add to the list:
Digitally Imported (Trance, Vocal Trance mainly but everything else as well.)
http://www.di.fm
Music addict. : ) - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -28/+33Why the hell would you want to listen to Deathcab for cutie?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I totally agree with you. Last.FM has introduced me to so much great music. Although their flash preview track player is a bit buggy sometimes...
- patm1987, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5he mentioned pandora and last.fm, but skipped on the pandorafm
http://pandorafm.real-ity.com
I like pandora's radio setup, and last's social setup, so it's only logical to combine them. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Deathcab for Cutie FTW!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Most of these are pretty cool.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^sir, do you work in the music industry? because i suspect you don't as you have no understanding of how the economics of the industry work. btw, only labels , not artists, can be members of the RIAA--and not all labels are members.
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think these services are all pretty good it just depends on what you want to get out of them. I've been using LastFM because I use iTunes and it's dead-easy, and I just like the idea of being able to track my tracks and post them on my site. I haven't really tried the other features of the site though.
- punko79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The most interesting function of last.fm is not the recommendation feature, it's the social networking and charting functions. With a simple plugin for winamp or windows media player, it logs what you are listening to and allows you to share with friends, post an up to the minute chart on your blog or myspace page.
- apecat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The reason I prefer last.fm is their openness. Their own client programs are GPL'd, as in truly Free Software, but it doesn't end there.
While scrobbler plug-ins (which will track your listening habits and allow the site to build your charts etc.) are available for an amazing lot of audio players on many platforms, Amarok, The Most Amazing(?) Jukebox software on Free Unix-like systems like GNU/Linux, has integrated last.fm radio proxy capabilities, which means that you can play last.fm's radio streams directly without third party software: That is a *huge* advantage for those of us who like the idea of One Unified jukebox on our desktops. Amarok will soon be ported to Windows: http://amarok.kde.org/content/view/10/66/.
Last.fm offers additional subscription based services like very customizable streams. These services can be activated/purchased for limited or longer periods from the user's control panel.
Pandora on the other hand seems extremely intelligent, but it requires Adobe's proprietary Flash plugin which only is available for a handful of platforms, and is, naturally not very suitable for users who understand the concept of freedom. And while a browser embedded flash crapplet might be the easiest solution for most people, something like Amarok's last.fm capabilities would be really awesome, especially since flash is extremely bloated and inefficient.
However, it's hard to dislike Pandora, especially since some truly brilliant guy created PandoraFM (http://pandorafm.real-ity.com/), a cool site hacked together around the Pandora web interface. It basically submits the tracks you listen to using pandora to your Last.tm profile, in other words does the best possible work of combining these two worlds. Last.fm's social networking potential (creating chart and recommendation generating groups on last.fm for irc channels, friends, other communities etc is a very useful standard feature) and human generated content/profiling combined with Pandoras "smarter" music choices should make any music fan interested in tracking own habits and discovering new stuff feel all warm and fuzzy. - jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@apecat
...exactly! which is why i think last.fm stands out among these packages.
i, for one, listen to a good amount of tunes at my pc; but take in to account what i listen to on my ipod/phone, its a "win win" for last.fm users! plus having the portability of their (last.fm) app does not limit you to being at a pc all day, making last.fm more attractive. so yeah, the advantage of last.fm working with devices is huge, and possibly one of the less-known pluses of last.fm
of course, i'm a music fiend. i obsess over the artists i enjoy, playlists and other things... having some way to track my music habits has been great (and slightly obsessive). having a decent recommendation system has been instrumental in musical growth. - jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3imho, last.fm is the best!
the tagging aspect really works, plus the charts feature is really cool to track your music habits. another last.fm site is: http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/
which does a graphical/visual display of "bands that sound like...." -- give it a try!
i've been turned onto many bands i'm not too familiar with due to the social aspects (friends and neighbors). if you're using any of the above mentioned programs (other than last.fm), give it (last.fm) a try. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2last.fm is awesome for bands and labels as well.
- YellowPostit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pandora is often talked about much more (at least in what I read), but I think last.fm is really underrated. The social and tagging aspect is great. I completely agree about having a profile.
I also find Pandora is missing a few bands that have hundreds of thousands of scrobblers on last.fm. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been away from Last.fm for a while but loved it while I was using it. I think I'll go log back in and have a listen to your station NiteShok. Nice Top Artists list but I have to know how in the hell Crowded House fits into that list. Digg for the Floyd, Maynard and Zeppelin, oh hell, and Crowded House.
- akkuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is even a desktop app to use instead that is pandora + Last.FM, OpenPandora (what I use) and I also believe Pandora's Box.
- JesusIV, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@nnonix Uh, you might want to check your stereotyping. Ben Gibbard's lyrics generally arn't emo.
- svenjick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's actually more logical to do the opposite (since Pandora's suggestion are better quality [IMHO] but it's unfortunately not possible... Anyway, both systems are great.
- apecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jonstafari;
I think that last.fm's concept of "scrobbling" what you're listening to on your own is unique among these services, which means that, yes, ipod support (as in allowing transfers of stats from ipods) is something that only last.fm has. - wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as the odd random plays throw me off once in a while, its still much better than the radio and most streaming sites
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+3I think Pandora is awesome. I've got some great recommendations from it. Stuff I probably would have never heard on my own.
- zmoothg, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0 Check out http://www.flashwidgetz.com Definitely a great site
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And that is the problem. Everyone except early adopters won't take the time to set and tweak the station... They want to click one or two buttons and be done.
- NLMA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hah, and I just finished an iLike review podcast.
Noooooooh (exaggerated gasp of all of you, I know, I know))
I think iLike does a really great job on making it all a bit inconspicous. It really blends well into iTunes. - crossers, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0most of them are really cool!

Online Music Roundup: Pandora, Last.fm, Yahoo! Music
http://paininthetech.com/online_music_roundup_pandora_last_fm_yahoo_music - JoshStix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@HunterTV
You really should give the other features of Last.fm a whirl! The dashboard is a good place to start as it gives you links to new music (that you hopefully haven't heard) and relevant free mp3s (you can't argue with free, legal downloads).
Last.fm has been my #1 website of the past few months. Awesome!! - tokernizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Last.Fm, but it does no good in discovering new music for me anymore. My new favorite is "Rate Your Music". I just discovered some new crazy stuff on there this week.
- folkevil, on 03/18/2009, -0/+0let's try http://drimr.com, it's like last.fm or projectplaylist :-?
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Let's used pandora, last.fm, and radio.blog.club. Out of all of them, last.fm is definitely one of my favorites. Now they can use more/longer samples but after getting familiar with this site, you will feel uncomfortable if your tracks isn't being logged hehe.
- ovomac, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0He's right. You have to have the webpage open for it to run. Which sucks. And the widgets that have been created are just HTML of the flash image you see when you go to the Pandora website. So, it's basically like having the website open anyway....which also sucks. It's too much damn flash. Slows the computer down. I prefer Last.fm. Pandora is not computer-friendly by any means at all. They should make a smaller flash player like Last.fm has.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1openness... .good point!
correct me if i'm wrong, but the other applications listed do not support devices (ie: iPod), whereas last.fm does. - mrsmong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Also, don't forget about internet radio stations. I personally like http://somafm.com/. Not as social as these, just a radio stream. But they do play some good stuff.

- redmatty75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm a big Pandora user and it's been a voyage of discovery through artists I'd never have heard otherwise. Would love to see what effect these sites have had on sales of artists back catalogues. Anyone for some Barclay James Harvest?
- stillasleep00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MOG.com is the best. Hands down. Simply the nicest, most cool community on the internet. Plus, the REAL Ben Gibbard has a REAL mog. REALLY.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Tried last.fm and didn't like it. However, iLike.com is very good IMO.
- rrrrw22, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2http://www.stage.fm/ has a lot of indie bands and now they let bands sell songs online and keep 100% of the profit.
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I did this years ago with clinko.com...
Ha I don't mind that I keep being overlooked... I can't afford the hosting anyway.
Here's the people using it now: http://www.clinko.com/music/
Here's an example of an artist with recommendations: http://www.clinko.com/music/weezer/ - razorsharp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Uh, no. It means that being a musician is no longer profitable so you have to have a day job. I bet you feel informed throwing words like "web 2.0" around and real important calling it a "revolution," but somewhere along the line of jerking off to William Gibson and Linus Torvald you forgot to take an economics class. The RIAA exists to protect capitalism and to protect artists. If your commie idealism becomes a reality then no one will ever see musicians live because they'll spend their Saturday nights haunched over their computer discussing the latest piece of binary they just downloaded with their MySpace "friends."
Get a ***** life. The RIAA isn't out to trample your rights, they exist to enforce the rights guaranteed to artists. There are a lot of screwed up things about the music industry, but the RIAA fight against piracy isn't one of them. If you think DRM infringes upon your freedoms then you need to take a long vacation in China and learn what oppression is really about. - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1used 'em, hate 'em. for the most part their databases are lacking a ton of music and they get predictions wrong. netflix is pretty poor about their recommendations also, it can't be all that difficult. if you like this service, you are probably happy listening to national radio stations as well.
- ekso, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2They forgot http://www.musicovery.com/
- nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3My god man. Talk about 'music to kill yourself by/to/over'.
